Hello everyone,

I just got my eTrex Legend CX from FedEx. It is my first unit and I am eager to get started. A little late and rainy for that today though.

I was looking around the map that comes with this is not what I would call highly detailed. Where is the best place to get a map and what do you recommend?

Anyone who has a Legend CX with any tips for ease of use?

caches found zero but I was able to track myself from the couch to the bathroom and back. lol

Welcome to the group! But I think you're probably the FIRST one here with a Legend CX. The Garmin "X" models are new, and we've talked about how miuch we'd like to upgrade, but I don't think we don't have any hands-on experience with it.

But having said that, itlooks like the eTrex Legend CX is a mapping GPS, and works well with Garmin's Mapsource maps. I like their Mapsource City Select (We have a Garmin GPSMap 60c), but see that this unit supports their City Navigator software. Not sure what the difference is - maybe someone else can help.

Make sure you come to the next geocaching event and show us your GPSr!

Trust me, you don't want that lousy CX... I'll tell ya what I'll do, I'll trade ya my GPS72 for it, so that way you can have a good quality GPS to cache with, and I'll properly dispose of that one you got there for ya... :D :D :D

and sorry, i don't have answers... only dumb looks, But welcome to the group anyways!

You will definitely have to make to an upcoming event and meet all the usual suspects of the Maine Geocaching community. Welcome aboard.

Welcome aboard,

Many here love the mapsource city select, For many of them that works just fine. It is a good all round caching tool. I use Mapsource topo usa. I use that because for me auto routing is not as important and the topo shows many of the dirt roads and tote roads as well as the Applacian trail. I prefer the topo lines to tell me how far up or down the cache is. I think that youd like either. The only things that I can find wrong with the Topo is two things one is there is no auto routing feature for it and the other is that you need the disk to run it.

Good Luck and happy caching,

Dave

I've been using my 60CSx for over six weeks now (as long as the x has been out). You are almost sure to want, either now or later, CitySelect or CityNavigator with it's excellent auto-routing capabilities. With the "x" models, I think that the Navigator will prevail. It uses larger portions of map for each selection, thereby using less selections to fill the same area as CitySelect. This might become important when it comes to "how much can I load into the unit"? Right now the Garmin firmware allows just over 2000 blocks. That seems a lot until you really start loading.

Right now I'm using a 512MB TransFlash SD card and have the area from southern Labrador across Canada down to the central Michigan area and extending down through Ohio, West Virginia, into the Carolinas. Everything south and east is included. I also have all of the same US portion of that same area using Topo (which I use a lot while actually caching), as well as all the tides for that area. I've pre-ordered a 1GB card already.

It's been a learning experience in downloading regular waypoints, since it's done differently than in my previous 60CS. I've also just begun loading thousands of caches as POI once I've reached the 1000 cache limit of the GPSr with pocket queries. This will come in handy during travel.

If you have any specific questions that I can help with, feel free to email me.

As a Magellan user (insert joke here) I'm afraid I don't have much to add to this thread . . . but I did want to welcome 1wall and quoddy to geocachingmaine.org.

I also use Mapsource TOPO USA and find it suits my needs much as Dave does but from what I hear on here and around, the Mapsource city select is good all around and will do just fine for geocaching.

Saw a couple of the new "X" model Garmin's at the event, Gob-ler and someone else had one but didn't get to see them in action but from what I heard of them the new Sirf111 chip is just great, plus the added ability to store all kinds of maps on the transflash card is another plus.

Hi everyone
Just reading replys to this post. Noticed a few of you use MapSource Topo. I just recently purchaced this product, and was wondering if lack of secondary road names was common? Call road in Milford is just called "Road" same for the stud mill road. Is this normal or am I missing somthing in the program?

This is going to be fun for this group alone.

When are the events?

Who locally sells mapsource products? City Navigator looks pretty good.

Thanks for all the welcomes.

Yes it is very common in TOPO. You will get a more diverse listing of names of roads and streets and such with City Select or Navigator.

All the events we have will all be posted on the Maine cache page when they get near. As far as maps go, for myself I have had good luck on EBAY. And welcome to the addiction.

Hi Iwa11,

Welcome to geocaching, Closest local for Mapsource for you would probably be Delormes or LLBeans both usually have them on the shelf but prob a list price. Just for info.

We are having a pig roast event on 17 June this year. So keep an eye out for that.

Speaking of that does anyone know how to get a hold of GPSFUN? I need him to release this event. I told him to not release it until I was done with the details. Now I am done and the email address I have for him keeps bouncing back to me.

I have been using TOPO and am a little disappointed with it, especially when I get lost on back roads with the kids. Will the Navigator or City Select programs work along side TOPO or will I have to choose one over the other?

I'm using City Select 7.0 with a Vista C. I'm impressed with the autorouting but have found that sometimes the quickest most direct way is not necessarily the best way. For example, on the Rotary Trail cache in Waterville, the route chosen by the Vista C kept putting me on the wrong side of the river, which was obviously the closest point to the cache. Knowing the area helped so it wasn't a major issue. The issue would be an area I'm not familiar with. While the autorouting and maps are detailed the Vista C screen is small and doesn't give enough surrounding map to help in the situation described above. When you zoom out the maps lose the detail and when zooms in it only show about .75 miles squared.

The ole' laptop with its 15 inch screen is still my best mapping tool as I can see detailed maps of 20 miles squared.

How I digress, I like the City Select by Delormes, its powerful and relatively easy and intuitive to use. I would recommend it for caching but it does lack detail terrain info that the topo would have.

I did post a reviewer note a couple days ago but nothing happened. I sent him and email through his GC account last night and he got it and released the event. Thanks everyone.
