I'm going to try and get the WiFi listing project going again. BRDAD and ATTROLL developed a data base that could be loaded (I believe) into GSAK showing WiFi hotspots as waypoints.

The list would show town, site name, physical location and coordinates.

More news to come...

:D :D :D

We had started a database of libraries here in the state that had connections so we have that database to work on. I Googled Maine Wi-Fi hotspots in Maine and there are a few directories listed. Here are 3 of them:

http://www.jiwire.com/browse-hotspot-united-states-us-maine-me-22.htm

http://www.wi-fihotspotsdirectory.com/Wi-Fi-Hotspots-In-Maine-286.html

Yeah - I'm familiar with those. But they don't give coordinates, so we can't put them into GSak or on our GPSr's. :D :D

(I'm sending you some info via email)

Yeah,I don't use a laptop so I was just trying to help out with some of the info that's all. One of these days though I might. If you have any map software I am sure you could input the address of any of these spots and get an approximate coordinate to use. Just a thought anyway.

As I said previously, we ALREADY have a project started to produce a WiFi hotspot list. What we have so far is shown here:

http://www.geocachingmaine.org/wifi/geo-wifi.gpx

This link brings up the text file. To use it, save it to your desktop as geo-wifi.gpx (text file) and you can import it into GSAK like any .gpx (pocket query) file.

I previously agreed to maintain it, but we need additional input.

We ask you to submit new WiFi hotspots with the following information (you can send it to me in a PM):

1. Town hotspot is located in
2. What it is. (i.e., public library, McDonalds hotspot, town office, etc)
3. Physical location (124 Smart Street, for example)
4. Cordinates

Once I receive the data, I'll update the file and it will be available to anyone who wants it.

The coords for the Bangor Library were a digit off

The correct ones are N44° 48.261 W68° 46.317 The posted ones had the West at 069 instead of 068. Only about 48 miles off. I loaded this list into GSAK and will use it I'm sure. I plan on posting VIP and any other good sites and their coords as I find them.

I was told the other day by the owner of some of the southern maine Subway resturants that he is working to add open wi-fi to all his stores in southern maine and NH. If I get buy any I will try to confirm ones that are operational and get coords but they may be another place to look to add to the list. Also I have heard that Hadlock Field in Portland may also be putting in an open WI-Fi but i have not confirmed anything on that yet.

Ah, yes...

Jake's "home away from home"! LOL!

But remember, we're geocachers using GPS data. Post WiFi hotspots with the following information:

1. Town hotspot is located in
2. What it is. (i.e., public library, McDonalds hotspot, town office, etc)
3. Physical location (124 Smart Street, for example)
4. Cordinates!!

If this project finally takes off, and I develop the database, coordinates are necessary for MAPPING. :D:D

A very interesting project!
I have a program on my cellphone. It monitors WiFi hot spots in range and build database with coordinates using build-in GPS. So after a while as I drive around the town to geocache/shop/work/whatever I have built a db of thousands wifi hot spots in Bangor area. Some are open, some are using WEP encryption I consider them also open :) and some are closed using WPA encryption. But I guess you are looking for officially public hot spots :P
Anyway this project sounds very interesting to me and if you need any help send me a private message.

Brdad set up the database, so all I need to do is input the data (in the format requested), then can produce a .gpx file of the results. I think I have 3 entries so far... LOL!

If you have a list of addresses of businesses offering free wifi you can get coordinates using Google geocoding API.

Beats me what the coords are to UHOP . . . I mean I can find my way their blindfolded and with one leg tied behind my back. ;) :)

Besides, Unity isn't that big of a town . . . that said . . . perhaps Hiram and the Amazing Technicolor Garmin Oregon will get a nice set of coords the next time he comes down for his Guiness and Greek pizza.

The data is maintained in a .gpx file so it can be used in GSAK, etc. Plus I have to add it to the data we already have. Sheesh! It was 5 years ago that I worked on this - I can;t remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, let alone what I did 5 years ago! LOL!

You can just Google Wifi hotspots in Maine and comeup with a pretty comprehensive list as well. All you would have to do is put the address in Google Earth for the coordinates.

You can just Google Wifi hotspots in Maine and comeup with a pretty comprehensive list as well. All you would have to do is put the address in Google Earth for the coordinates.
http://www.openwifispots.com/state_free_wifi_wireless_hotspot_Maine_ME.aspx

Well, Google Earth didn't exist when we started this project! And if you Googled "WiFi hotspot" back then, you came up with darn few listings! LOL!

What ever floats your boat. (I'll keep up with the project because I said I would, and will continue until enough people say "Screw it - we don't need it". (You don't count...) :p:p

I have a little issue with this. "Here we go gonna start another fight." Not all the locations that have been listed are free or what I would call free and clear.

For example...
1. Bangor
2. Hotel, Holiday Inn Bangor Odlin Road
3. 404 Odlin Rd & 395 At Hermon
4. 44.7899, -68.8111
This location asks you to call the desk for a password. This is free if you are registered but not clear to access from the lot. I found this on several that I actually visited and logged on to. You will find this with many on those other sites and those listed here.

I was to understand that this list was a resource to stop in and do from the vehicle, so many listed have not been actually visited and tried.

The ones I listed I know work because I actually tried them.

Holiday Inn Odlin Rd. Bangor
VIP Odlin Rd. Bangor

Do not fall into the free and clear category after being tested.

So, I'll post a bunch of locations that I find from other sources and list them as cache locations. When you go to look for them, taking your time and spending gas money, you can't find them because they are not there and may have changed since they were listed on the other sites. You have been sent on a wild goose chase. Tell me you wouldn't be mad.

Before you answer, remember we have seen your posts on caches that were a little off.

Yes, 4-5 years ago a list would be a big help. Now, with so many wireless networks, it probably isn't necessary. LOL!

Times have changed. Somewhere in the photo archives is a 1970 picture of a MUCH younger WhereRWe? at the controls of an IBM card sorter - part of a computer that took up 2 40-foot trailers! LOL!

I was trusting my memory so readers beware. I didn't have a decent laptop when we stopped there so I didn't attempt a connection from there. I'm thinking I just remembered seeing a WIFI sign of some sort and didn't realize they were charging for it.
