View Full Version : Welcome to the Newcomers!
WhereRWe? 09-22-2004, 02:51 PM We seem to have newcomers joining the group every day, and I want to welcome you all. If you are a newcomer to geocaching, please feel free to ask any question. A lot of us have gotten involved in paperless geocaching lately, and I think we are building an especially good experience factor.
Any by all means, join in any discussion!
:)
Beach Comber 09-23-2004, 07:19 AM I second the comments that WhereRWe made. This is a great place to ask questions, get fantastic practical information, and get to know your fellow cachers. We have been gathering in the chat room farily regularly on Wednesday nights around 8-9 as well - feel free to join in! Look forward to meeting you :)
shewolf7153 12-06-2004, 12:11 AM I am a newcomer. I stumbled onto Team NAB at the WWII cache. I am now hooked on geocaching. My question is: when I find a travel bug and if I take it and place it at a new cache, how is anyone going to know where it is??? Do I log it on the site??? Anyways, I haven't taken a bug but I do like geocaching when time permits....:D

Welcome to the addiction!
Yes, when you pick up a Travel Bug, you log the cache page as taking it, and when you place it in another cache, you log it into that cache. Full instructions, as well as many other answers, can be found on Markwell's FAQ to Geocaching pages (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/marklent60544/myhomepage/Geocaching/markwellgcfaq.htm#bugs).
Happy caching

Welcome to the group!
To add to BRDAD's comments, make sure that when you find a travel bug, you log it in before you place it in another cache - or else make a note of the TB number if you place it in another cache on the same outing (before you get home to your computer). You'll need that number to log it in. I've made that mistake a couple of times. :o
Haffy 12-06-2004, 10:45 AM Welcome to this group of fine people. Hope you can join us in chat on Wednesday evenings and you'll find that this sport of hobby or whatever you would like to refer to it is absolutely addicting. Welcome aboard!!!

parmachenee 12-07-2004, 06:10 PM We would like to place our "Welcome Mat" out there for all newcomers. Please feel free to ask questions about anything: gpsr's, travel bugs, logging caches, placing your first cache. You have a great resource here in some great people who will be very willing to help.
Beach Comber 12-07-2004, 06:29 PM Welcome to the world of geocaching - have LOTS of fun!!! Hope to meet you somewhere at an event or at a cache.
WhereRWe? 12-07-2004, 07:33 PM Welcome to the world of geocaching - have LOTS of fun!!! Hope to meet you somewhere at an event or at a cache.
Speaking of which, I think it's the Waterville/Skowhegan area's turn to host an event If Haffy will help, I'll volunteer RULOST2? (JUST KIDDING, Sweetie...)
But I'm up for an event....
Who else do we have in the Waterville/Skowhegan area? Volunteers to help???
Beach Comber 12-07-2004, 08:46 PM Awesome!! I'm not from that area, but if there is something that I can do to help or support your efforts from the South, I would be happy to. It will be great to see everyone!
Cache Maine 12-07-2004, 11:16 PM Let's all meet at Big G's in Winslow! December 18, 2004?
We are not all really THAT busy that we couldn't slide in a lunch with friends, are we?
Mainiac1957 12-07-2004, 11:26 PM I can't make the 18th, but I could the 11th perhaps. Keep me posted OK.
Beach Comber 12-08-2004, 06:43 AM Not sure if your suggestion was in jest Cameo, but I can't do the 18th either. After the holidays would be better - though believe me, I would rather be having lunch and fun with my geocaching buddies than out spending $ on holiday shopping - ugh!
Cache Maine 12-08-2004, 11:42 AM I think we should have a cache event soon. And BC is probably right about waiting until after the holidays.
How about January 22? Happens to be my birthday so there's another reason to celebrate!!!
Ideas?
parmachenee 12-08-2004, 12:19 PM After the holidays would be better...sometime in January. Charron and I will help you out Bruce in any way we can. I like beer and wings. :D

Cameooooo mentioned Big G's in Winslow (just across the Kennebec from Waterville), which is a deli-type sandwich shop noted for their HUGE sandwiches. Slices of bread are about 1 square foot, so most people just order a half.
They often host gettogethers, so I think this is a good suggestion. Easy to get to from an I-95 exit (3-4 miles and only a couple of turns), so it should be good.
I would avoid the 11-1 time frame, though, as it draws a big lunch crowd.
And I'm pretty sure they don't have beer... (Sigh.....)
Comments?
Mainiac1957 12-08-2004, 06:28 PM Hard to have a beer and wings event if they don't sell beer and wings.
WhereRWe? 12-08-2004, 06:49 PM Hard to have a beer and wings event if they don't sell beer and wings.
Well, we could have it elsewhere, but "Cammy" (I hate trying to remember how many "O"'s to use) did have a great idea for a location.
And the wings and beer were so good at the last "beer and wings" event, that I'd hate to start comparing....
;)

We'll help you celebrate, but NO PRESENTS!

shewolf7153 12-09-2004, 12:22 AM Hi All,
A get together would be great but if on Saturday would be better later in afternoon.
Unfortunately, I can't make the chat night on Wednesdays. Don't make it home from work until after 10:00 pm.
Will watch to see when get together is.........:)
NurseDave 01-04-2005, 02:45 PM Hello you Mainers. I'm here because I peek in at different groups mainly to look for people that might like to swap sig items or coins that are being designed.

WhereRWe? 01-04-2005, 07:04 PM My Friend And I Just Started Last Week. I Was Wondering If There Were Any Others In My Town Doing This? Where Is The Farthest You Have Driven To Find A Cache?
LOL!
We've made trips SPECIFICALLY for geocaching to Vermont (twice), New Hampshire (twice), New Brunswick (twice), and Massachusetts (once).
We were in far northern Quebec this summer. There was a cache we wanted to get, but didn't know exactly where it was and the local internet cafe didn't open until 4 PM that afternoon. We decided to go visit an indian village - 100 miles each way. When we got back and went to the internet cafe, we found out the cache we wanted was - you guessed it - at the indian village. So we went back again the next day - 100 miles each way. We did get a "first to find" on a cache that had been there for 2 years, though. Here's the log:
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=23e0a5ad-e317-4a42-8a0f-3e1df82d27ce
Haffy 01-04-2005, 09:30 PM :) Just wanted to lay the welcome mat out to our new members this week. To Mad-Muffin I think if you look at the caches near you ,those will be the ones that were placed there by other cachers that live in that vacinity.I can give you a few cachers names that I am familiar with namely Geochicks,Massive Cachers,Geomainacs,Attroll are just a few that come to mind in the Augusta Hallowell Farmingdale area. Just do a search in your zip code area and you'll find plenty of them. May you be inflicted with the geocache bug.
Beach Comber 01-04-2005, 09:58 PM Welcome!!
I've cached in other states, but usually when I am in the area anyway.
However, if I add up the miles that I have driven on 7 trips to Old 470 it adds up to a lot! LOL
Enjoy the sport - it will take you places you would never see otherwise!
lefty 03-25-2005, 07:13 AM oops, I posted my newcomer post in the tell us about yourself thread. Can anyone see the tatoo noob on my forehead
Mainiac1957 03-25-2005, 07:54 AM Hey Lefty, we're all noobs at one time or another. ;)
covefarm 07-25-2005, 07:50 PM Hi There- I was wondering about the Cache Events. We have a multi-age family (5 years old to 15) are families welcome and if so are there children of all ages?
brdad 07-25-2005, 07:56 PM All ages are welcome! I wish we had more kids come. Actually, I wish I could get mine to come more often!
Dave,
Now... come on, Really. Do you want to encourage peoples children to be infulenced by this crowd?:D
Beach Comber 07-25-2005, 09:19 PM brdad - how many kids DO you have? LOL
attroll 07-25-2005, 11:49 PM Hi There- I was wondering about the Cache Events. We have a multi-age family (5 years old to 15) are families welcome and if so are there children of all ages?
All the cache events that I have attended so for here in Maine welcome children. I know the next two events coming up welcome children also. The Kayak Event cache that I am hosting may not me orientated towards children because it is intended for kayakers. But there is a group that is still coming to the event to camp and do the caches in there cars. There is a playground at the campsite. So there should be things for the kids to do. They are more then welcome to come.
WhereRWe? 07-26-2005, 06:32 AM Hi There- I was wondering about the Cache Events. We have a multi-age family (5 years old to 15) are families welcome and if so are there children of all ages?
I've seen the last couple of posts and fully agree with them - kids are always welcome. BUT... We have had a couple of "beer and wings" events - not sure how appropriate they would be since they're held in a tavern - or if kids (other than VERY young ones) be allowed entry by the establishment.
When we have another "beer and wings" event, I'm sure we'll check to see if kids are allowed in the venue, and then you be the judge as to whether or not you want your kids to attend. We certainly dont get loaded and do wild things - well, not DURING the event anyway - so the atmosphere is "kid safe".
Sheesh! We certainly want kids to enjoy geocaching as well. Can you imagine what the technology would be like when they're our age?
 :D :D
brdad 07-26-2005, 06:45 AM brdad - how many kids DO you have? LOL
Only one, but he is a teenager, so he has 20 personalities.
covefarm 07-26-2005, 11:00 AM Thanks so much for your replies regarding children. I just wanted to double check. I am hoping that my crew can make it sometime to an event. Anxious to meet others and share stories and knowledge. Barbara
attroll 07-26-2005, 12:52 PM We have had children at our Beer and Wings events in the past. They are aloud. My son has come along with others. Neoncouple even brought their baby. They are more then welcome to come the the Beer and Wings events in the future as I am sure Mainica1957 will say. Most people don't bring their children to the Beer and Wings events because having an event there is kind of boring for the kids because there is not much for them to do. But they are welcome.

Sinster 07-26-2005, 04:25 PM My Friend And I Just Started Last Week. I Was Wondering If There Were Any Others In My Town Doing This? Where Is The Farthest You Have Driven To Find A Cache? Hiker88 (don't think he is registered here but at geocaching.com) is good friend of mine lives next town over in Hallowell... I was up last weekend and we did some caching and we also both acquired poison ivy, and it's now just clearing up.
I graduated from GAHS andsome of the places I went I never knew they existed. I was wow never been here... even though they were so close to were I lived.
The only thing I dislike about visiting home is that I have the Commonwealth of Ma**holechusetts plates on my truck all the locals think I'm a Ma**hole. I was better off with my Texas plates.

You can't - Maine only allows 7 characters - and I already have GOCACHE! LOL!
Wish I knew who had CACHER. It wasn't available when I got my plates, which SHOULD mean that someone already has it. :D
You could spell it Casher!:D

A person can still get GOCACHE even if you have the name taken for a plate Bruce. You can also get the plate CACHER. What you need to do is get a plate other then a normal plate. What I mean is that there are a few options now. The Chickidee plate, the Lobster plate and the Loon plate. There may be even more I am not sure. Each plate can have the name CACHER. So if you had three cars you could have the same plate on all three cars.

If you want it just go out and get it. You can get this plate from DMV just don't get the same style plate they have. I have checked into this already for the name Tink for my wife and it can be done. But right now we decided to not do it for other reasons.

No, I'm happy with GOCACHE! LOL! We're planning on getting RULOST2 as a plate for "her" car. :D :D
WhereRWe? 07-28-2005, 12:45 PM Back to the subject of the thread...
I just read a cache log by a newcomer (3 caches found) who complained "The last person who came to it made it almost impossible to see because they covered it up with sticks". LOL! RULOST2? and I WERE the last ones to find the cache! Sheesh! We're bad, aren't we! :D :D :D
dannreed 07-28-2005, 08:24 PM I just wanted to say Hello, as I just joined the group tonight. I'd never heard of this group until receiving an email from geocaching tonight. Looks like a great group after a quick scan of a few posts, and i hope to be a frequent contributor. I'll post a real introduction of myself when i have a little more time.
Thanks,

firefighterjake2 08-01-2005, 01:29 PM Hi there. I'm really firefighterjake . . . but for some reason the automated system that sends you an e-mail with a link to click before you can post failed to do so and since I really wanted to ask some questions . . . .
Some info about me. I was born the poor son of a share cropper . . . wait a minute, wrong story.
I live in Unity and work full-time with FFFarmer at the Bangor Fire Department . . . only while he makes a living saving damsels in distress and rescuing cats in trees and scarfing down strombi I go to businesses to teach them how to use extinguishers, perform CPR and have small children say to me "You're fat!" when donning my fire gear to make the poor wee bairns not be scared of us.
I volunteer with the Unity FD and formerly ran with the Unity Ambulance . . . Bearfirefighter is currently a member and I believe Willowprin was a former member as well.
My hobbies: geo-caching, eating, camping, eating, hiking, eating, ATVing, eating, watching movies, eating, snowmobiling, eating, writing, eating, etc.
I'm married in case anyone was wondering . . . although why my wife married me is beyond me . . . no doubt she sometimes wonders herself. She is not into geo-caching and I doubt I can get any of my five cats to go out with me so I go solo.
Anyways, that's enough rambling about me.
Oh yeah, I also know Dave1976 as I taught at the school he worked at and I also know Attroll as I went out on a snowmobiling trip with him last winter . . . this was before the almighty REV blew up on him!
---------
Attroll . . . is there any way you can switch this persona over to firefighterjake as firefighterjake2 will be quite confusing for me?

That email might have been from me! LOL! But welcome to the site!
I used to send email to anyone I saw who had posted to a cache log and was not on this forum, but there are SOOOO many newcomaers lately, that I couldn't keep track.
:D
Welcome aboard Jake,
Sounds like you know enough folks in here to feel right at home. When you have questions ask. We may not know the answer, but we will fill you with some load of crap anyway. LOL
Rick is to blame when something isn't working. Always remember that! Oh and most important of them all is : What GPSr do you use???
firefighterjake 08-01-2005, 03:06 PM Magellan Meridian Colour

Yeah, going into this whole GPSr and geo-caching thing I realized that the Garmin folks really seem to outnumber the Magellan folks . . . but I liked the look of the Magellan Colour screen (I'm mesmerized by pretty colors), price on-line and the map program that came with it as I originally bought the GPSr to do some maps for the ATV Club and Snowmobile Club . . . and to track where I've traveled . . . figured the geo-caching thing would just help me justify the purchase.
Oh and as for bad habits . . . I've got a lot of 'em and buying Magellan is the least of them! :)

firefighterjake 08-02-2005, 08:59 AM Hmmm..... I guess you haven't seen the Garmin GPSMap 60-series, then! LOL!
Actually I did take a look at them and really liked them . . . a lot more pretty colors . . . but the cost was a bit more expensive than what I was willing to pay.
becket 08-02-2005, 01:27 PM ohmygod, thank goodness someone else has a magellan besides me! welcome, firefighterjake! i have a magellan meridan gold - and i LOVE it. i was feeling pretty lonely here! any VERY outnumbered! becke

I figure sometimes it's nice to be different.
Incidentally I once worked down at Stonington a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Actually it was my first job out of college. Commuted back and forth from my camp in Thorndike to Stonington -- 3 hour daily commute. Ended up getting done due to a) the long commute and b) I was working for a trade publication for commercial fishermen and I knew next to nothing about the fishing industry . . . and in fact I don't particularly care for fish other than fried scallops -- at an industry trade show that I attended with the company we went out to dinner and I think I was the only one eating something other than fish for the main course.
The G Team 08-02-2005, 02:32 PM We are in the minority for sure--Magellan owners unite!
becket 08-02-2005, 03:22 PM there's even more than 2 of us! ffj, i know the fisheries paper you are talking about it's okay to like just fried scallops! my list isn't too much longer than that i drive an hour each way to work (i have worked in bangor and bar harbor - those were 1 1/2 hour drives each way) i can't imagine a 3 hour drive - thorndike is a long drive! and g-team, i'm happy to know you are magellan owners! we're a whole crowd now!
There are a few of us that use magellan gps's :) I still use my base meridian gps
:D  robt
FFFarmer 08-03-2005, 09:30 PM  Hey Jake, I'm coming back to Central Fire for a few months (or years). When I'm not out saving cats and damsels, and your not out scaring kids, we'll have to hide caches for each other around the station.

I've thought of one or two places . . . but thought having a bunch of geo-cachers roving around the outside of the station might not go over too well.
