View Full Version : Anyone up for Monhegan Island?
brdad 07-16-2006, 07:16 AM Lee and I were caching the coast yesterday down to Port Clyde and nearly went to Monhegan but it was too late in the day. Then we decided it might be a fun trip for a group of us to take in the near future.
While we would have shipped out of Port Clyde yesterday, it seems Boothbay would be a wiser choice as it's closer access to the highway.
From Boothbay, the trip would cost $32 per adult and children 3-11 is $18. Maybe not the cheapest caching trip, but it could still be fun.
The trip would take up most of the day. full details are here. (http://balmydayscruises.com/islandtrip.html)
Departs Pier 8 Boothbay Harbor 9:30am
Arrives Monhegan Island 11:00am
Departs Monhegan Island 2:45pm
Arrives Pier 8 Boothbay Harbor 4:15pm
85 minute ride each way
There are 3 caches on the island, two regular and one virt. It will involve a few miles of walking. It could be a nice cache on your Delorme Challenge (map 8) list!

We are unsure of a date yet. Hopefully sometime in August. Does anyone think they would be interested or have any thoughts or ideas?
Trezurs*-R-*Fun 07-16-2006, 07:33 AM Wow, sounds like a great day of caching!! The cost is a little prohibitive for the 4 of us ($100.00 just for the ferry). I thought of doing the ferry to North Haven for those couple of caches and its the same thing, way to much money.
Although planning that far ahead would make it easy to budget, only $25 per week so I won't say we are not interested, I will say lets see how the car inspection goes and what I can lock in for oil prices.
The short answer to your question is YES, we are interested if the rest of it falls into place, we'll have to wait and see as the date approaches.
Great idea and I'm hoping we can do it.
I need map 8! When were you thinking of going?
Beach Comber 07-16-2006, 09:13 AM Keep me posted - Monhegan is on my list of places to visit!
Cache'n Jacksons 07-16-2006, 09:13 AM We're interested, depending on the date. Will have to fit it in around my son's work schedule, daughter's wisdom teeth removal, and a concert in Mass. We've wanted to take the trip out there for some time now, and this would be the perfect way to do it! :)
Hiker Twins 07-16-2006, 06:47 PM If I had the day off I would love to go to Monhegan Island!!!! Let me know if you decide on a date.
Ye Olde Prospector 07-16-2006, 08:01 PM I would be interested in a trip to Monhegan. Keep us posted on a date. Used to stop at Monhegan often when I was in the CG stationed at Boothbay Harbor. Sometimes we would wonder around on Monhegan while waiting for electronics tech's to work on the fog signal controls on Manana Is just across the cove. Nice place to get pictures out there. Haven't been back since then.
YOP
chinacachers 07-16-2006, 08:04 PM Depending on the date ...we would love to go. Fairfield Folks said they would like to go too:)
Sudonim 07-16-2006, 09:45 PM I wonder if I could talk pedalchick into going, sounds fun.
Kaching Karen 07-17-2006, 08:04 AM I can't do any caching in August in the area. You sure you don't want to do it on a nice September day?
pjpreb 07-17-2006, 02:33 PM Schedule permitting We'd love to go to Monhegan! :)
Hmm the When is the only question I have, it soulnds like fun even if we did it in september but I may have an issue with getting the time off. If it is on a thursday or friday right now that would be great for me!!!
team moxiepup 07-17-2006, 11:32 PM Sounds like fun, not sure if we can make it but you have perked our interest :) We will have to see if Moxie would be able to go along.
firefighterjake 07-18-2006, 08:55 AM Color me "intrigued" as there is a lighthouse that I need to get a picture of for my collection . . . the geocaching would be a bonus and if the date worked I might be able to convince my wife to come along for the ferry trip over since she loves being on the water.
This sounds like it could be alot of fun. Dave it sounds like this would make for a great event. Count us in as long as the weekend jives. Any weekend will more than likely do as long as there is notice:D :D
becket 07-18-2006, 11:59 AM Dave it sounds like this would make for a great event.
dave, you are right, this would be an awesome place for an event. i have been there twice, each time for a 3 day working retreat. it is absolutely beautiful. i only wish i had known about geocaching when i was there - i could have done the shipwreck cache! i am going back there in august with one of the people that i went to the retreat with.
brdad 07-18-2006, 01:32 PM I'm surprised but glad we got such a great response. Lee and I will try to work out a date asap, possibly we can figure it out tonight.
It probably is a great place for an event, but I think it will take a good chunk of the alloted time just to get the caches and enjoy the walk.
I am sending an email to get a few questions answered...
team moxiepup 07-18-2006, 03:17 PM Brdad, maybe the actual event (if you were going to make it one) could happen on the mainland either before or after the trip. This way no time is lost on the island. This would also allow people who may not be able to afford the trip out to the island teh ability to attend the event and they could possibly cache on the mainland during the day and meet at the event later. I would suggest after the trip so everyone can talk about the trip out there and share it with folks that couldn't make the trip.
Totally a suggestion :D
brdad 07-18-2006, 03:29 PM Well, if anyone makes it an event, it won't be me. I am a lousy host. If anyone else wants to do so, I am open for discussion. I'm happy just getting together and getting the 3 caches out there without us logging a find on an event. Since we get back to Boothbay around 4:15, we could probably not attend an event very long, either, as Boothbay is a good 2 hours from here.
Beach Comber 07-18-2006, 03:39 PM Ohhhhh - don't be so shy! You ARE TOO a great host - you help clean up and wipe the table after dinner! hehehehehe
brdad 07-18-2006, 03:53 PM Ohhhhh - don't be so shy! You ARE TOO a great host - you help clean up and wipe the table after dinner! hehehehehe
Oh now, don't go and remind Lee of that. She'll expect me to do it every night!
Haffy 07-18-2006, 04:55 PM Why does everything have to be an event anyway? Why can't just a few friends get together for a great time and do some caching at the same time? Sounds like a great time to me.
Why does an event have to be complicated. My thought was if everyone that is interested in going, shows up at a certain time anyway and there is a particular place we are going to meat it could be that simple. It doesnt have to be ellborate. Just a suggestion. I like the idea of meeting and keeping it simple. It was only a thought.
pjpreb 07-18-2006, 05:42 PM Why does everything have to be an event anyway? Why can't just a few friends get together for a great time and do some caching at the same time? Sounds like a great time to me.
I'm with Haffy- pick a date and if we can join you - great! If we can't - have a blast and tell us all about it later.
Dave has already said he is not interested in making it an event...
Cache'n Jacksons 07-18-2006, 07:10 PM Well, I just found out my son's work schedule for the rest of the summer... the only days we'd be able to go as a family would be Tu-We-Th. :( We still want to go out there so we'll probably end up doing it as a mid-week family thing.
msteelee 07-19-2006, 06:03 AM Ohhhhh - don't be so shy! You ARE TOO a great host - you help clean up and wipe the table after dinner! hehehehehe
Beachie! You'll ruin his image as a "traditional" guy!
brdad 07-19-2006, 06:30 AM Ok, we decided on a date of August 26th. I hope it works out for most people. If the weather forecast is not favorable, we can try that Sunday, the 27th. Otherwise, it'd have to be sometime in September, but that is hard with school starting.

Bummer :( Ironically enough, I will be in Bangor at the Folk Festival!
Haffy 07-19-2006, 05:27 PM Man that is right thats the Folk Festival weekend, decisions, decisions.decisions.......
Sudonim 07-19-2006, 05:59 PM I'd forgotten about the festival. That puts me out.
brdad 07-19-2006, 07:22 PM We forgot about the folk festival. Saturdays would be hard, how about the 13th or the 20th?
pjpreb 07-19-2006, 07:35 PM If you build it, they will come. :) (pick a weekend that's good for you guys)
brdad 07-25-2006, 06:36 AM Ok, Let's get back to important Geocaching matters!
Sunday August 13th, unless the weather looks like it'll be horrible, in which case we'll go for Sunday August 20th. Can anyone make that???
Mainiac1957 07-25-2006, 07:00 AM Have to see what the weather does I guess as the 13th won't work.
Ye Olde Prospector 07-25-2006, 08:09 AM Hi Dave,
The 13th or 20th of Aug is fine with me. I am still interested, should be fun.
Cliff (YOP)
Constance and I will do our best. I think that both days are ok:)
Thanks Dave,
Dave
brdad 08-04-2006, 08:57 PM I finally got an email from the cruise line. I'm guessing email is not their thing as the reply was very short with questions unanswered.
They did say if a lot of people were going reservations should be made. I'll leave that up to anyone going. We will probably make reservations for ourselves as soon as we are confident the weather will be agreeable. The ticket booth number is ticket booth at 1-800-298-2284.
So again, Sunday August 13th seems like the day!
Beach Comber 08-04-2006, 09:29 PM Awesome! Either day can work for me, though the 13th is best so I will keep my fingers crossed for that day.
Leave Port Clyde at 10:30 and leave Monhegan at 4:30?
The tide schedule is best for beach combing on the 20th, but I bet I will still find a few things on the 13th :)
brdad 08-05-2006, 06:36 AM Leave Port Clyde at 10:30 and leave Monhegan at 4:30?

What is so special about Monhegan Island? What is out there. Don't tell me a cache. Just asking because I was thinking about going if there something interesting.
brdad 08-05-2006, 11:34 AM Three caches, one being a virtual at a shipwreck, and the company of other cachers. A few miles of exercise. Picture taking opportunities. And somewhere many of us have never been to. I have no idea what else we might see as I am one of those who have never been there.
Beach Comber 08-05-2006, 12:42 PM I've not been before either, but have always heard how beautiful it is. It is painted by many, many artists. It has been on my list of places to visit for awhile.
The other thing you would see (hopefully!!) is me leaving the island with treasures galore. I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes to this. When I went to TAT's tidal cache with the gang, I had my arms full - lots of teasing potential there!! In fact, given the short period of time, I might even opt to comb rather than cache - either way, I look forward to going.
Boothbay rather than Port Clyde? Port Clyde offers a short ride and longer time on the island. I don't know if there is much of a price difference. I would also think it is closer to most who are going than Boothbay is.
Well, ta tat - I am off to the beach :D :D :D :D
attroll 08-05-2006, 01:51 PM What date did you all decide on this?

We thought Boothbay would be easier since it's closer to Brunswick and the highway. Port Clyde would be a longer day if we got on the 7AM boat, but that would be hard for a lot of people. Probably even for us, since we'd be leaving home at least 3 hours before the boat leaves.
What date did you all decide on this?
We started this thread 07-16-2006. We knew we wanted to go, and thought it'd be great if some others could join. We were very limited in what days we could go and ended up changing it anyway on account of the Festival In Bangor, but it was more of a "we're going, would love it if a few others can make it" type of thing. We didn't have the flexibility to check what dates and times everyone could make it.
the Wyeth's live there in the summer. Alot of their work is from the Island. If you do Port Clyde you should try the earliest in the day you can, parking is quite limited. the general store in Port Clyde is a treasure.
Have fun!
Beach Comber 08-05-2006, 04:29 PM The general store in Port Clyde is a treasure.

It is!! One of my favorite places of all times!

Sounds great to me! WOuld be silly of me really, to drive right by Boothbay to get to Port Clyde. But I must admit, I am partial to the little town of Port Clyde. I'll save a trip there for another day.
I can't wait!

Hmm, Did I miss something here? I still did not get a date in my answer you gave me?
Beach Comber 08-06-2006, 12:03 AM shooting for the 13th, but if the weather is bad, it will be the 20th
attroll 08-06-2006, 12:34 AM shooting for the 13th, but if the weather is bad, it will be the 20th
Darn. The 13th is bad for me. I have a family get together that I can not get out of. If you get rained out then I might be able to do the 20th.
brdad 08-06-2006, 06:14 AM Ah, I thought you wanted to know what day we decided that we were going some day, not what day that some day was.
Wow, if anyone can understand that, I'll be amazed...
Hiker Twins 08-06-2006, 06:45 AM I am off next weekend August 12th and 13th so I would go if that was when the date was....just trying to plan ahead. Please, please, please pick that date :)

Yes, we are going on the 13th unless the weather looks really bad!
Ye Olde Prospector 08-06-2006, 08:49 AM Hi Dave and Lee,
I am planning to go too. Hope the wx co-operates. Be interesting to see what the island is like now, last time I visited was in the early 70's.
Cliff
Hiker Twins 08-06-2006, 06:36 PM I will be going and DRAGGING Lost Hiker Man along with me!
pjpreb 08-06-2006, 09:00 PM Dang! We're booked for the 13th. Hope the weather cooperates and you all have a blast. We'll be at the Sea Dogs game with the Rotary Club.
brdad 08-09-2006, 10:46 AM The weekend weather forcast for Monhegan looks great, so I just made reservations for Lee and myself for this Sunday.
You don't need reservations, but they encourage you to do so. To make reservations, just call (207)633-2284 or (800)298-2284. All you need is your name and tell them it's for ther day trip to Monhegan. No credit card required, and they will hold the reservation until 9 AM. They recommend you are there before that. Again the web site is here (http://balmydayscruises.com/islandtrip.html).
We have space for two in Lee's Escape if anyone would like to join us for the drive from Bangor to Boothbay. I think we will be leaving about 6 AM or just after.

Laura and I plan to go, and carpooling sounds like a pretty good idea to me, considering the price of fuel (which we'd gladly contribute to, of course)... So, we'll join you, if you'll have us. :D
parmachenee 08-09-2006, 05:21 PM We are making reservations and plan to join you. Sounds like a fun trip before we head to Colorado on Tuesday.:)

Sounds great! It'll give me some time to find out why you haven't logged Battleship yet, and to discuss alternative ways home should I not like the answer. :D Ok, just kidding...
As stated before, we're leaving about 6. I can send you coords or letterbox clues to the house. ;)
If we get on the road in time, I need to make a quick stop at NAB TB hotel to pick up a TB.
ribnag 08-09-2006, 07:05 PM brdad : Sounds great! It'll give me some time to find out why you haven't logged Battleship yet
I actually did start that one this past Sunday, oddly enough. Only have about half the grid filled, though, with just one "hit" so far. Perhaps I'll get it finished Saturday. :)
If we get on the road in time, I need to make a quick stop at NAB TB hotel to pick up a TB.
Sounds good - I usually leave for work by six anyway, so not a problem. Seems kinda cruel to strand a TB on the island, though... :D
Hiker Twins 08-09-2006, 07:34 PM I made two reservations for the boat ride to Monhegan Island. I am really looking forward to the trip! It will be the first outing with a geocaching group this summer. Work finally cooperated and gave me a weekend off!
Beach Comber 08-09-2006, 08:57 PM Seems kinda cruel to strand a TB on the island, though... :D
On an island is the perfect place to be!
Ye Olde Prospector 08-10-2006, 06:08 PM Hi All,
Got in my reservation for Monhegan trip Sunday. See ya at Boothbay. Reservationist says you can park at parking meters in town all day on Sundays free. Save 5-10 bucks that way. Cache on !!!
YOP
Sudonim 08-10-2006, 07:18 PM Pedalchick and I have reservations too. See ya Sunday!
parmachenee 08-11-2006, 12:50 PM Check the logs for Monhegan Magic. We will need to take a new cache container with log as it seems to need some maintenance or replacement.:(
Haffy 08-11-2006, 03:00 PM Got my reservation in as well. See y'all there Sunday morning.

Oooh, I guess my PQ was too old to notice that.
I think I have a .30 cal ammo box, or maybe we're better off with something else?
parmachenee 08-11-2006, 09:04 PM Oooh, I guess my PQ was too old to notice that.
I think I have a .30 cal ammo box, or maybe we're better off with something else?
I'll bring a lock and lock camo covered just in case the ammo box is too big. I have no idea how it was concealed in the first place but these should cover it.
Beach Comber 08-12-2006, 09:03 AM I am going to have to back out of the day trip to Monhegan :(
I have committed to doing a craft show next Saturday and I am not even remotely ready! Sooooooooo, that means I will be working with the beach treasures I already have rather than looking for some new ones and squeezing in the caches.
Have a great time! The day is supposed to be beautiful and as always, the company will be fantastic, I'm sure!!
brdad 08-12-2006, 10:02 AM I'll bring a lock and lock camo covered just in case the ammo box is too big. I have no idea how it was concealed in the first place but these should cover it.
Great. I do have the .30 ammo can, and just custom camo'd it just in case we can use it. An'd I'm using the opprotunity to create an article on one way to camo ammo cans. If we don't use it. I'll paint it again!
Sounds like if we can replace the cache, it will need a few trade items as well, so if anyone else attenting would like to donate a small item or two, that'd be great.
Beachcomber: Ahh, that's too bad. We were looking forward to you coming. Perhaps you'll make the Isle Au Haut trip with us. That will not be in August! Maybe not even this year...
Beach Comber 08-12-2006, 11:54 AM Thanks Dave - I have been struggling with this decision all week and had hoped that I would make enough headway over the last couple of weeks to pull it off. But alas - it is a reminder to me why I don't typically do shows in the summer!
Isle au Haut, you say?!?!?! Another island on my list of places to visit!!! In fact, I have been toying with going on the 15th of September (it's a Friday) - perhaps you and Lee will be available and interested. When you go and if the little shops are open - be sure to check out The Sea Urchin. I may be a little biased sense they sell my wares, but it is a great little shop!
Enjoy the sunshine!
brdad 08-13-2006, 10:37 PM I am so glad we asked everyone to come. We could not have had a better day to do Monhegan! Could we have had any more fantastic weather??? It was great meeting Ben and Laura of Ribnag, and to chat with all our old friends. We may not be able to log it as attended, but it was a great event nonetheless. Thanks again all for coming along!
Beach Comber 08-13-2006, 10:49 PM We could not have had a better day to do Monhegan!
Awwwwwwww - are you sure about that? lol
brdad 08-13-2006, 10:56 PM Awwwwwwww - are you sure about that? lol
No, the day could not have better. Just the people could have! Oh wait, that doesn't sound right, either... hmmm....
Oh well, it would have been nice if you could have come as well as the ones that did!
Beach Comber 08-13-2006, 10:58 PM thanks! i realized after i wrote it that you were talking about the weather. Glad you all had a great time!
parmachenee 08-14-2006, 06:44 AM I am so glad we asked everyone to come. We could not have had a better day to do Monhegan! Could we have had any more fantastic weather??? ...and we are glad we went. Picture perfect day for the trip over and we enjoyed seeing some old friends as well as meeting Ben and Laura. We had met Ben briefly before at the Kayak event but didn't get to spend much time talking. The trip provided many beautiful scenes which were well documented with all the cameras we had as well as an opportunity to talk and share stories. The island it a great visit with scenic views and nice trails. Just another great spot that geocaching will take you. Thanks to a friendly group to spend the day with, it was a very nice experience.:)
ribnag 08-14-2006, 08:45 AM Laura and I had a great time, we enjoyed both the location as well as meeting a bunch of new people. And of course, we (collectively - I don't think I ever would have found that, personally) rescued a very-nearly-dead cache, so that makes the day rather satisfying. :D
On the down side, I look just a wee bit like a raccoon today. Tip of the day - When hiking continuously between 10am and 2pm, one may want to put on some sunscreen. :(
But I'd do it again (with sunscreen :o ), and look forward to the next event (loggable or not!). :)
Sudonim 08-14-2006, 10:52 AM Note to self: next time bring sunscreen (and bee repellant, those things hurt!)
Aside from that, Pedalchick and I had a wonderful time, great scenery and great company. Dave and Lee, thanks for the suggestion. We could have done the trip on our own, but it's much more fun as a group.
pjpreb 08-15-2006, 04:15 PM Sounds like you all had a great time! The pictures you all posted were great! Thanks for sharing :)
brdad 09-15-2006, 06:04 AM It looks like Hollora, Becket, and FirefighterJake had their own trip to Monhegan and had a great time as well. And almost on the anniversary of Monhegan Magic's placement 9/20/2002.
Slightly interesting trivia - In the first and second years of it's placement, Monhegan Magic was found 10 times each year. In it's third year, it was found only once, getting several DNFs as well. This 4th year, we brought the numbers up to 19 for the year, perfectly maintaining the average of 10 finds per year! Of course, there's still 6 days for someone else to find the cache.
It's really quite amazing the Monhegan caches get 10 finds a year. I don't get that on a few of my caches. I'm glad we replaced the Monhegan Magic cache for that reason.
hollora 09-15-2006, 11:31 AM Yes, we did visit yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed our day. The Magic cache container is very nice. Classy paint job. Thanks for replacing it.
The statistical trivia is interesting as well.
firefighterjake 09-17-2006, 07:02 PM It looks like Hollora, Becket, and FirefighterJake had their own trip to Monhegan and had a great time as well. And almost on the anniversary of Monhegan Magic's placement 9/20/2002.

Not to quibble, but you must have me confused with another Firefighterjake who went to Monhegan with Becket and Hollora since I was home sick that day. ;) :D

Well that's the thing Hiram . . . Moxie tastes nothing like orange soda . . . it just comes in an orange can which leads some folks to expect it to be like orange-flavored soda and it's a Maine tradition to not tell folks any different.
I'm unsure where the folks were from . . . just that they were "from away."
hollora 09-18-2006, 06:36 PM And Jake - thank you for not complaining or whining! [:D] It was a awesome trip! Glad we could nurse you back to good health..........did you rest the following day after your infusion of salt air into the sinuses?

LOL...I was thinking the same thing...ya know, being the Moxie aficionado that I am. :D I buy it for people all the time, usually just to see the gut-wrenching reaction.
Cache'n Jacksons 09-20-2006, 06:30 AM I think "gut-wrenching" is just about right... I remember my first Moxie when I was about 10 or 11... it was in the middle of summer and we were cutting hay in this large field. I was hot and needed a drink, so I went to the cooler and grabbed a soda. "What's this? Says root beer on the can..." Yuck!!:p:mad: I suffered through it though, because at least it was wet and cold. That also happened to be my last Moxie. :)
RanMan22 09-20-2006, 07:17 AM My parents didn't buy soda when I was younger. When I'd go visit the older couple next door, they'd give me a little bit once in a while, and of course...it was Moxie. SO, I have always liked it, cause from the time I was little, that is what I thought soda WAS!
Moxie rocks!

My grandfather always had some around. It's all his fault I am the MoxieMan today!

-RanMan22 we didn't have soda either, except when my grandparents visited from boston. they would bring 2 or 3 cases of moxie - and it sure didn't last long!

Now see some of my earliest memories of Moxie were similar, but just the opposite . . . after haying the fields we were given Moxie and I found it to be quite refreshing.
Even today when I'm looking for some true refreshment and don't want to do the healthy and sensible thing and drink water I treat myself to a Moxie . . . and it is one of the few times I don't drink Diet -- Diet Moxie just doesn't taste the same.
