The was a small article in today's BDN By outdoor writer John Holyoke. He and an ABC7 camera man went out in Bangor and Brewer on Thursday caching. There will be a story on Monday night. ABC7 in Bangor at 6 & 11 and Fox-22 Bangor at 10pm. I have written him an e-mail offering to get together with local cachers if this pursuit is something he'd like to more about. I also invited him to GCMe, and told him of the large caching community here in Maine. We'll have to see how this works out. I'd like to think he will put it in a positive light.

Cool. I have yet to see anything in the paper or on TV about geocaching. I still won't though because I don't get the Bangor channels:( .

don't worry I'm on the same page as you are, I don't read the paper, and I don't have TV... maybe someone will be nice enough to record the news segment in .MOV format and post it on the site.... :D

So this thread must explain the "friendly reminder" about the site's TOS, then? ;)

We have requests for copyright violations, a flood-like message, hacking techniques (hey, if holding "shift" violates the DMCA, then spooooooky stuff like cut-and-paste certainly must!), political propaganda ("I'd like to think he will put it in a positive light"), and if I set my browser to 407 pixels wide and squint my eyes just right, I can make out a swastika in the whitespace of Hiram's second post, and Satanic propaganda messages when I dictate FuddsGirls' second message and play it back in reverse!

Scofflaws and rogues, the lot o' ye! :D:D:D

well I dont think recording a news segment is copyright infrigment (unless dave charges us $ to watch it) and is flooding more like posting the same post dozens and dozens of times? I think my post is more a display of personal ignorance and stupidity. And whats the DMCA? (The Democratic Master Chefs of America?) And what about the good faith effort to keep threads on track... here we were talking about the news segment (hoping dave would record it) and now you have to start the witch trials  :D

Cute, 1 DNA (Did Not Attempt), 1 DNF, and one found on a JCyr cache!
He didn't trash out, though ;-(
Will upload asap.

He made it look like it's impossible to find a cache. I felt he put our hobby in a very poor light. Not at all like the last TV report we saw.

We got to get some experienced cachers to go on one of these excursions and show them what it's all about. I agree Brad.

RanMan22's prediction: One and/or both of two things will happen:

1. The micro at the Paul Bunyan statue gets a HUGE number of logs soon
2. The micro at the Paul Buynan statue gets muggled rather quickly, since the video clip practically shows you where it is...

*sigh*

I agree with Mainiac -- I don't think they put the spin on this story that they could have.

Maybe someone should hook up with him for a sequel and show him how professionals do it. Then again, I stood at that kenduskeag cache 3 times before I was able to actually attempt the cache.

I think it depicted someone who didn't fully understand what he was doing, and am glad he was light hearted about it. The part I liked least is when he didn't trash out the McDonald's cup.

As far as getting muggled/lots of logs, that would not surprise me either. The cache I did in Lewiston for the Sun Journal - There was no permission to place it there and the property owners soon found out about the cache and had it removed. I've part felt responsible for that ever since. But, that's part of the game and reinforces the need for permission in some places.

I know it and there was even a trash can in the background when he walked up to the fountain. Sheesh... we just have to talk to these people. ;)

Perhaps, they should have a personal invitation to the Last Bash of the Summer Event. It's close. He could meet a good cross section of the community.

Geez you guys...lighten up!! We were with John at the SeaDog last night when the segment aired. Although his sister has been geocaching, he is new to it but finds it very interesting. We forget how we bumbled around when we first started geocaching...and some of us are still bumbling around...including me. I thought it was a very lighthearted depiction of a newbie and how they might feel, even the lack of CITOing. We had a little discussion of what to look for when finding caches and also the many activities you can combine with geocaching. He plans to continue geocaching and maybe we can get him to a local event...Brad's possiblity. Happy caching!:)

Agree with you Frank - we all started there and hopefully continue to learn daily. I love the events as you meet folks and there is so much to learn with everyone's different levels of experience. Hence my suggestion he be invited to come to the event.

I hope John continues caching as he could be a great asset to our sport. It is always nice to have the media interested. He has done a great job with information about other sports and expect that will be the same for caching.

Ditto that, If everyone was perfect we'd all be runnin around with the name Hiram....

I enjoyed the clip because it showed geocaching the way it should be, unpredictable and adventerous. he took the DNF pretty good too...(but i wonder if he left the keychain on the branch?) he should do a sequal once he gets hooked on the paperless caching. :D

I finally just got a chance to watch it. I liked it - he has a great sense of humor and put a fun spin on it. Of course, there are always things that could be said or done differently, but isn't that true of anyone, anything?

Just think how awesome it will be when we can communicate as "Geocaching Maine." Perhaps follow-up with a phone call - tell him a number of members saw the segment and enjoyed it, offer to join him on a hunt, etc. This is a perfect segway!
