View Full Version : Looking for "don't miss" caches.
ajayhawkfan 09-01-2006, 03:47 PM I am going to be in Maine from September 9th to the 15th. I hope to attend the Last Cache Bashe of Summer Event on the 9. After that I will have time to cache in the area of the event to Bar Harbor to Portland. In that area are there any "don't miss" caches? You live in a beautiful, historic state and I would like to see it, I'm not interested in numbers or lamp post caches. Any help would be appreciated!
WhereRWe? 09-01-2006, 07:55 PM Well, I would need to ask a couple of questions:
1. Have you been to Maine before?
2. Are you more interested in scenery or the hunt for the cache?
3. Any difficulty/terrain limitations?
:D :D :D
team moxiepup 09-01-2006, 08:35 PM The Fort Williams Cache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=deced6dc-e2a2-4c54-beec-e002a350f42c) is Maine's first Geocache so if you want Maine Geocaching history this would be a good one. It is in Cape Elizabeth just a little south of Portland. The park is also home to the Portland Headlight. We love this park it such a beautiful place with plenty of room to spreadout and enjoy it. The cache is hidden away from all the tourist muggles. There is also a very nice multi in the park and a few other caches in the area you could catch.

I have been to Maine and found some caches.
I am interested in the views or history. I really enjoy hikes.
I have no limitations.
I'm interested in micros on lamp post, trains, tanks etc. I am interested in seeing the state not spending my time looking for a micro. I have done enough of that.

This, along with Wreck Cove, both off the coast of Portland can be done in a morning trip to Long Island. Neither are tide dependent. As a bonus you take a ride down beautiful Casco Bay.
ajayhawkfan 09-01-2006, 09:39 PM Those do look like a lot of fun! Thank you.

Well, it doesn't sound like you'll get to my area, but I'll promote a couple of our caches that are worth a visit (And a day trip from Bangor and back):
North along the Old Canada Road Scenic Byway (http://www.byways.org/browse/byways/11510/) - caches and great scenery - to
Over the Horizon (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=f7c6ab94-33c9-4595-9e2f-e791b7247a21) (Worth seeing the HUGE, multi-billion dollar Over the Horizon radar antennas that were never used operationally). This is on a route with several other caches that is a GREAT drive along an old railroad roadbed - now a paper company road - along lakes and streams.
It also brings you to Got Moxie (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=c836e61d-0ec2-46a7-a36b-a00d53c0be69), which is also one of the prettiest waterfalls in New England.
Then back to the Scenic Byway north, and a loop back to Bangor via Greenville and Moosehead Pond (more caches along the way).
ajayhawkfan 09-06-2006, 03:11 PM I am planning on attending the event!! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and hearing recommendations of caches I should not miss.

"Don't miss", eh???
We made our third annual "Search every square inch of the the stupid train... again" pilgrimage this past week. ;)
We found a letterbox, much to our surprise, but no cache. :(
Did you know (at least) one of the axles still has functional oil in it? Nasty black stuff that sticks to your fingers and smells horrible. Didn't find the cache in there, though.
I give up, for another year. I had a great GPS lock, followed a collection of hints as gathered from those posting their find logs, even your pictures of the container and someone else's picture of themselves logging in (right where my GPS indicated, unsuprisingly, not that it helped any). :p
Ah well. No hard feelings. Personally I think this rates above a 3-star difficulty, but I can accept failure. Really. :D
...Until next year. ;)

It's funny with Old 470 - People find it in less than 15 minutes or it takes them 3-4 tries, or more for a few! If you look at the logs, however, it seems most cachers from away find it more quickly than the locals, not sure why.
Wait till you find it and let me know what you think the rating should be. It's right there! But I am always willing to listen to feedback.
My most basic hint that works best is "Trust your GPS", and "Don't stand too close to the train or it will throw your GPS signal off".
I do love a good DNF story, however!
Better luck next time!
I think it'd be a good rest stop on the way north or back south for ajayhawkfan. Spend 15 minutes and log it or don't log it!

I KNOW WHERE IT IS!!! (And for the right price I'll tell all! Sorta like "Duke" in the Bush's Beans commercials...) ;) ;)
Haffy 09-07-2006, 05:12 PM I think that people who don't have much experience finding micros will probably have a harder time than those who happen to have more experience finding them. But then again I wouldn't say this is your typical micro either, it is more on the small size. It took me 3 tries but I was a newbie at the time too. I think if I was to hunt for it now and knowing what to expect, I would have found it within minutes.
Sudonim 09-07-2006, 05:29 PM I think Beach Comber has the most experience with THIS micro:p
I got lucky, first visit, but I can see how it would take 3-4 visits to get this one.
MoxieMan 09-07-2006, 06:21 PM I think the "Tidal Earth Cache" in Old Orchard Beach is pretty cool. I haven't logged it yet, because I could definitely have gotten closer at a lower tide.
WhereRWe? 09-07-2006, 06:38 PM It took me 3 tries but I was a newbie at the time too. I think if I was to hunt for it now and knowing what to expect, I would have found it within minutes.
Sheesh! You found it after THREE tries??? RULOST2? and I must have visited that site 4-5 times, and had NUMEROUS hints from Brdad before we found it! LOL!
Which reminds me - I HATE tanks. Gan you give me a hint for that cache in Augusta? LOL! (Just kidding...) ;) ;)
pjpreb 09-07-2006, 06:43 PM We got Old 470 on the first try but our daughter got stung by the bees that guard the cache. Here's my hint: Don't open those little flap thingys!
Team2hunt 09-07-2006, 07:06 PM There is no reason to travel to Phippsburg. There is nothig really there. Homes and a few businesses but not much else. The real treasure is in it's small dirt roads that lead to beautiful views of the Maine coast. I was born and have lived in southern Maine, all my life. Never once did I ever want to or have the notion to travel down route 209 to Phippsburg. Then one day I decideded to grab a few caches along the coast. Morse Mountain has remained one of our all-time favorites. Do not head down that way without doing the several others in the area. You won't be disappointed.
