GPS Training For Loggers, Land Owners and Outdoor Enthusiasts
The Maine Forest Service, the Somerset County Soil & Water Conservation District and the Upper Kennebec Valley chapter of SWOAM will be offering training on the use of GPS (Global Positioning System) for loggers, land owners and outdoor enthusiasts. The training will teach the basics of what GPS is, how it works, GPS uses for the logger and in the field training on use of the GPS unit. The training will be lead by Patty Cormier of The Maine Forest Service and Adam Cates of Sandy River Outdoors.
GPS can be a valuable tool for loggers, landowners and Outdoor Enthusiasts in many ways. This short course will explain how loggers can use GPS in their work and folks will leave knowing how to operate the unit. GPS is one of the most useful tools anyone who works in the forest products industry can learn. Many foresters have been using GPS for years and have learned the value of this tool. Loggers can also benefit from using GPS in their work. Landowners can use GPS as a tool to map their land. Sportsmen have used GPS for many applications and find it a useful tool.
The training will be held in Skowhegan at the Skowhegan Community Center on Tuesday October 31 from 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm. The Maine Forest Service has 25 GPS units that participants will use for the day. Since we want everyone to have their own unit to learn on, the class will be limited to 25 people. Cost of the training is $10 per person.
