View Full Version : Where is This?
Haffy 01-10-2007, 02:51 PM As those of you who know me,I always have enjoyed taking photos of most of the places I have cached and I know lot of you also like to do the same. I would like to suggest a fun way to share in those places and maybe even make it a regular part of this website if it garners enough interest. I am suggesting a thread where a photo is posted in an area where there is a cache located and the first individual to guess where the photo was taken and maybe the cache ID # will get to post their own photo and so on and so on. This I think would be a lot of fun and it will also be a way to show others some of the great places that we have in the the state where there are caches located. I would like to start off with the following photo and the first person to guess where it is and the cache ID # and name of the cache will then get to post their own photo. If you have been here this one will be easy.

I have to admit that i have even tried cheating a bit and googling maine light houses and I am stuck. I will keep looking
OK I figured it out, Fort Point delight as far as the gc number I will have to get back to you on that never mind I got it

Haffy 01-10-2007, 03:50 PM Hey congrats Dave, you are correct, so now it's your turn.
hollora 01-10-2007, 04:48 PM Haffy - just a quick comment - I think this sounds like fun!

D'oh . . . too late on the button . . . I knew I shouldn't have drank that cough medicine last hour. :D
Beach Comber 01-10-2007, 06:10 PM Awesome idea!
Do you want to limit the photos to Maine caches?
Haffy 01-10-2007, 07:20 PM Yes I would since this is GeocachingMaine...........:D
Here is my where is it photo.
Yes this seems like it could be fun.
Good Luck every

Haffy 01-10-2007, 09:04 PM Hey Dave why don't you just copy and paste the IMG code that they give you right in here?
I'm Trying but it seems all ****ed up
Hold on I will keep trying

Haffy 01-10-2007, 09:44 PM Thats all I did to get my picture in here. I use photobucket as well. Maybe you have to resize your pic. Maybe it's too big. I think the final size I had was less than 100KB. I use the Windows Power Toy image resizer. You can find it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
I'm on dialup too so it takes quite a while for me to bring your photo up as well.
I gonna have to guess because I haven't been there yet!

Sorry Tom:(
Haffy 01-10-2007, 09:51 PM Is it Barrow's Falls at GCG5RH?
Is it Barrow's Falls at GCG5RH?
Haffys is todays winner. Now post your pic
Haffy 01-10-2007, 10:00 PM No!!! Really, that was just a guess as I took some similar photos when I was there as well.
Haffy 01-10-2007, 10:07 PM Ok this will be my last til we get some more people joining in. I don't want to be the only one playing.

Haffy 01-10-2007, 10:13 PM Did I say that......oops!!!
Haffy 01-11-2007, 12:14 AM Thats right Tom, Babbling Brook cache in Belfast. Now let's see you if can stump someone else.
brdad 01-11-2007, 06:50 AM That wasn't the babbling brook cache I did! The one I did was rigtht off the main road up a bank about 250' with no trails or signs, or babbling brook for that matter! Guess that's what happens when you start from the wrong point!
This if a nice idea, Haffy. Maybe I'll be able to submit a few of my pictures that I forgot where I was when I took them!
http://www.geocachingmaine.org/gallery/data/501/medium/Fog_Horns_Medium_.JPG
This won't "stump" you, but it may be very hard. If no one gets it by the time I get home from work, I'll post a another pic that will give it away.

It's a shot in the dark, but one of the few places that I've personally seen pitcher plants is at the bog walk near Quoddy Quandry, GC8A65 . . . although I'm pretty sure there are pitcher plants located in other bogs.
WOW! You are good!! I thought this would be hard, but in just 1 hour, we have a winner!!
Great Job firefighterjake, now it's your turn.
firefighterjake 01-11-2007, 11:16 AM Maybe I should try playing the lottery today . . . that guess was pretty lucky.
I found all kinds of great shots of lighthouses (I have a "thing" for them), but decided to use this photo . . . it could be tricky since it isn't right next to the cache, but rather it can be seen as you make your way to the cache . . . although I suspect folks who are caching for the numbers may take the shorter route and miss seeing (and experiencing) this great view -- a true gem that I suspect many folks never have seen or heard. One of my favorite caches . . . and unfortunately the photo really can't do this place justice.
If this proves too difficult (probably not for this crowd though) I have a few other shots of other places I can post that should be easier.
And incidentally, Haffy, this was a great idea!

firefighterjake 01-11-2007, 04:37 PM i'll choose door #2
Well, what would you say about an all expense paid geocaching trip to beautiful Lewiston, Maine . . . While in Lewiston check out the Bates College Museum of Art, the famed Colisee, Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary and as a special bonus get a tour of Seltzer and Rydholm after crossing the river in Auburn. ;) :D
OK, seriously . . . when are we going?
firefighterjake 01-11-2007, 04:40 PM http://www.geocachingmaine.org/gallery/data/500/medium/shoestring_cache_0111.JPG
Oh, oh, oh . . . I know . . . but I cheated on the exam! :D
Haffy 01-11-2007, 05:21 PM So Jake now that you have gone off topic again ;) , where is the location of the last photo that Becket just posted?
becket 01-11-2007, 05:23 PM Well, what would you say about an all expense paid geocaching trip to beautiful Lewiston, Maine . . . OK, seriously . . . when are we going?anytime, jake! what a prize! i'm so excited! thanks - i knew that was the correct door to choose!
firefighterjake 01-11-2007, 05:26 PM So Jake now that you have gone off topic again ;) , where is the location of the last photo that Becket just posted?
Do you really want me to come clean with the answer . . . I know it because a) I've been there and b) I kind of cheated to get the answer so it wouldn't be fair to get to be the next person to post a photo.
And Haffy you know me . . . I'm always off topic . . . heck I'm always off my meds . . . always welcoming new members that are apparently figments of my imagination, thinking Hiram's Jeep is the epitome of four wheel ruggedness, etc. ;) :D
firefighterjake 01-11-2007, 05:27 PM anytime, jake! what a prize! i'm so excited! thanks - i knew that was the correct door to choose!
Just be glad you didn't choose door #1.;) :D

Oh, oh, oh . . . I know this one too. Pick me. Pick me. I actually remembered it . . . but then I cheated again and confirmed the location. I know, I know . . . I'm incorrigible. I have fond memories from this cache and others done on this day.
Hiram357 01-11-2007, 05:40 PM Now tell the truth Hiram . . . did you cheat or did you know this cache? ;) :D
does it matter how we found the answer?? (i probably found out the same way you did) :D
firefighterjake 01-11-2007, 05:41 PM does it matter how we found the answer?? (i probably found out the same way you did) :D
No, not really . . . but I think you made the same mistake as Becket with this photo. ;) :D
Hiram357 01-11-2007, 05:44 PM No, not really . . . but I think you made the same mistake as Becket with this photo. ;) :D

becket 01-11-2007, 05:45 PM No, not really . . . but I think you made the same mistake as Becket with this photo. ;) :DLOL i cheated on this one, too!
Hiram357 01-11-2007, 05:46 PM Oh, oh, oh . . . I know this one too. Pick me. Pick me. I actually remembered it . . . but then I cheated again and confirmed the location. I know, I know . . . I'm incorrigible. I have fond memories from this cache and others done on this day.
Howd you confirm it? What sources are you using to cheat at this innocent game? :p :D
Haffy 01-11-2007, 05:51 PM does it matter how we found the answer?? (i probably found out the same way you did) :D
I think to keep this whole game legit it would be a wise idea to change the name of the photo to hinder those who wish to cheat to get the correct answer. I just realized that you could get the name by just right clicking on the photo and going to properties which unless it is a generic photo will give you the correct name. I too knew where the photo was taken as I have also found that cache and to find out if I was right on my guess I did just that and the correct answer was revealed.
Let's do this the fair way ok? Sorry to spoil anyones fun but that's what this was all about and having fun. :D
hollora 01-11-2007, 07:24 PM Was this one you took on our way to Monhegan Moonwatch (GCQ5M8)?
hollora 01-11-2007, 07:29 PM I better learn to get to the end and my answer was wrong anyway. Will try again......ha, ha - such a goof.

GCJM2B Moxie Trail Crossing
Or perhaps:
"Gorge"ous by Dave1976 GCPETB
Haffy 01-11-2007, 10:53 PM Gary is correct it is Moxie Trail Crossing. At least that's what the photo's properties say anyway.
firefighterjake 01-12-2007, 09:08 AM I figured someone from our Tread Lightly event might get that one . . . either that or I figured WhereRWe would come up with it.
And yup, Haffy, that was what I was doing . . . well except for my first real and honest guess about the Pitcher Plant at Quoddy Quandry.
What I did with my photo to prevent that was to save it as another file and I renamed it . . . I think I called it MysteryPhoto or GuessWhere or something like that . . . and uploaded that photo. I think most folks are pretty honest and as you mentioned this is just a fun game, but changing the name of the photo makes it more of a challenge. Again . . . a great idea to show folks some great places in Maine.
So its Garys turn to post a pic, right
Haffy 01-12-2007, 01:15 PM Yes it is.
Leyts forfeit Garys turn and we can get back to him and someone else can post a pic to keep this going.:)
I dont think that Gary will mind
Haffy 01-13-2007, 02:29 PM Ok, since you asked Dave here is another. We can get Gary again later.

Team2hunt 01-13-2007, 05:14 PM Look at my logs. KK and TAT and I were here last Saturday. It was quite the trip by kayak. BTW I didn't mind Haffy. I have a life. We were out caching.
Haffy 01-13-2007, 06:29 PM You are correct Gary so now it's your turn once again. I'll let you tell everyone where and what it is.

Haffy 01-14-2007, 01:11 PM Or even an easier way is to download the picture like Rick said to a photo image storage site, I like Photobucket myself. Then all you have to do is copy and paste the IMG code that they provide, right into the thread. So much quicker and easier than all the other directions but whatever works for you .

We found it while on the DeLorme Challenge. Dave is that how you knew also? Haffy I know has cached all over the state. The sun was setting and casting an orange glow on everything. Just beautiful. Dave are you keeping score? Maybe this should be ......stump Haffy.
Haffy 01-14-2007, 06:57 PM Actually I didn't do that particular cache but just from the blueberry barrens and the plaque I surmised the area it might be in and I was correct. So now my turn again huh?
Haffy 01-14-2007, 07:07 PM Ok here is one that unless you have been there you might not get. And that is me at the base just to give you some idea of the scale of it. Good luck!!!

Here's a hint.......It has been visited by a number of cachers who have attended an event in the summer in a nearby area.
Could it be "The Jolly Roger"? GCX965

firefighterjake 01-16-2007, 05:14 PM I'm a bit surprised at getting that one Becke . . . I believe that was a pre-TGIF outing since I wasn't with you and/or Hollora on that one. I found that cache on a trip with the ORCAs . . . which reminds me (not to get side tracked, but I do . . . Hiram, have you and G-Team come up with a plan for Tread Lightly II: The Return of the White Jeep? :D )
Anyways, here's another one . . . so many photos and places . . . but this is another one of my favorite caching locations.

FuddsGirls 01-17-2007, 08:23 AM ok, how do I set up an e-mail alert (not that that would help) when a new picture is posted here. I am always hours late on looking to guess the picture. Haffy 01-17-2007, 02:42 PM Yep you are correct and hope someone else will be able to give the correct info.
I know also but Jake is right I will let someone else get this one:D
Haffy 01-17-2007, 02:46 PM Come on and let's have some new players to this great game.
brdad 01-17-2007, 05:01 PM Isn't it ironic that once people slow down enough so us slow old people can answer, it's a pic we can't identify?

FuddsGirls 01-17-2007, 05:33 PM GCYE97 In the rocks?
Haffy 01-17-2007, 06:28 PM Sorry FuddsGirls, try again..... I'll give everyone a hint and say that the word WATER is in the cache name.
Team2hunt 01-17-2007, 06:43 PM I know also but Jake is right I will let someone else get this one:D
I think there were 11 of us there that day. We should all be exempt. The next hint might be who the cache owner is.
Haffy 01-17-2007, 06:56 PM I don't think anyone should be exempt. I mean how would you know where it is unless you had been there? It's just a matter of remembering where you were when you found the cache and not forgetting your surroundings. We surely are lucky to visit these places that geocaching brings us to. Ok, this is one of Laughing Terry's caches.
brdad 01-17-2007, 07:05 PM By trial and error, and FFJ's note, I finally found out what this one is, and just as haffy posted the owner...

Here goes....... You'll have to double click to see a larger picture, I still can't seem to past in a large photo. Haffy - Hope you don't mind that I used one of the pictures you shared with me! This is one of my favorites!
brdad 01-18-2007, 09:45 PM Oh, I know that one! But I'm gonna let someone else get it.
Beach Comber 01-18-2007, 10:10 PM Here is a bigger picture.........

Cool . . . I've been there way back in my pre-geocaching days (remember I have a "thing" for lighthouses), but didn't know there was a cache there . . . looks like I'll have a good excuse to go back. I've got a pic of this lighthouse hanging in my den since I really liked it.
Kaching Karen 01-19-2007, 09:45 AM Although I'm not playing the game, I am enjoying the pictures.
pjpreb 01-19-2007, 02:24 PM Is it Critter Cache GCGD6Q ?

pjpreb 01-19-2007, 08:27 PM This was one of our most favorite caches to date. Paddlehikers has some great caches in the Rangeley lakes area. We'll be headed back next summer to find Cranberry Cove.

I had a lot of DNF's at this one! Not sure if I wanted to find it, just wanted to keep going back!!
And for Tripple Bonus Points, tell me where this one is:

Here's a hint: The description says "This one is so easy to find it's not even funny". Clok em H.
brdad 01-20-2007, 02:42 PM Oh, I know that one - And, it's not so easy - at least it wasn't for me.

Haffy 01-20-2007, 02:58 PM It also seems from the last few logs that the cache needs some maintenance and a new logbook. The owner hasn't visited the site since October so maybe someone who is in that area could leave a new logbook or something to help out.
We have a winner!! I still go back, it's nice indirect way around western Maine.

Good idea, but for all those planning to go, the road is not maintained for winter travel. Of course, if we don't get snow someday, it won't matter. :(
brdad 01-20-2007, 03:15 PM Ok, how about this one?

Starzz 01-20-2007, 04:16 PM How about GCVM8A, powerful lake view.

Here's my picture! I think it's an easy one.
Haffy 01-22-2007, 09:04 PM Apparently not easy enough as I don't see anyones guess yet. Come on folks someone in here must know it. I certainly don't and want to see this topic continuing. Any guesses?
Kaching Karen 01-22-2007, 09:20 PM Do you need a hint? Huh? Huh?
kayakerinme 01-22-2007, 10:53 PM Well, Only 10 cachers have visited here and a full 30% of them are involved in the photo... and just 4 of them post to this board regularly. Not gonna get a lot of guesses that way, eh?
P.S. I'm the kayaker way in the back on the left so I think I have to abstain. :p
hollora 01-22-2007, 11:44 PM Ok - based on the stats and some research - is it a stage of Indian Pond Underwater Railroad?
Oh, oh it I win I am going to have to post something - I have a plan.
Kaching Karen 01-23-2007, 06:39 PM Yeah, for Hollora! She got it. She got it!

hollora 01-23-2007, 10:16 PM Here we go for your viewing pleasure. This photo was taken within 40 - 50' of the cache.

Ye Olde Prospector 01-24-2007, 04:01 PM I agree with Brdad Jasper's Secret GCQ6B2 Haven't been to the cache but was at Jasper Beach years ago and this picture looks familiar unless my mind is getting fuzzy which is possible. My guess!

Haffy 01-24-2007, 06:46 PM So is Brdad correct then? You didn't say.
brdad 01-24-2007, 07:54 PM She said it without saying it. :D
Okay, so here's one from the south, Fudds. Unfortunately, you're not on the list of finders. I couldn't find any my pictures of caches that are caches that you have found.
So, here is what might be a tougher southern one, but someone may recognize the area.

becket 01-24-2007, 08:13 PM So is Brdad correct then? You didn't say.sorry! i meant to say yes, brdad got it

FuddsGirls 01-26-2007, 07:12 AM You mean like Waterville? :D
Hey, I actually have been there once or ywice. Didn't I go to an event up that way?
Haffy 01-26-2007, 09:17 AM Just a guess cause that could be most anywhere in Maine but how about "Look for Moose" GCGDY2 up off the Elliotsroad?
sheeplady 01-26-2007, 11:32 AM No, but you are right, in that it is north of me.
Haffy 01-26-2007, 06:48 PM Ok I found it,it is Mooselook GCPC9P by Derhntr
sheeplady 01-26-2007, 09:42 PM Right on! I couln't believe it when I got to the cache, there were 2 moose, a male and a female. As I moved carefully into a better position to take a picture, low and behold, there were twins behind their momma!
Your turn now, Haffy!
Haffy 01-26-2007, 10:21 PM This one is for Fudd's girls. I hope you can guess this one as I checked to see if you had found it and you have.

Beach Comber 01-26-2007, 10:43 PM ohhhhhhh - I am biting my tongue!

Haffy 01-27-2007, 09:16 AM Hey congrats!!! Now you can try and get one past us......;)
FuddsGirls 01-27-2007, 12:50 PM I think this one should be easy.
Ye Olde Prospector 01-27-2007, 02:20 PM Maybe GEQ39J Cathance River Walk is nearby.
Cliff
FuddsGirls 01-27-2007, 03:06 PM See I knew it was easy. This is at the parking coordinates. Your turn YOP!
Ye Olde Prospector 01-27-2007, 10:29 PM This one will not be as easy as some. It is near a cache but can be missed easily.
http://www.geocachingmaine.org/gallery/data/507/medium/DSC00081_edited.JPG
Haffy 01-27-2007, 11:05 PM Well here is my guess....Apatite Rock GCHXNY ?
FuddsGirls 01-27-2007, 11:28 PM Thorne Head Challenge GCGCHZ Its a guess but the one that comes to mind when I think of YOP
Ye Olde Prospector 01-27-2007, 11:33 PM FuddsGirls-- Not Thorne Head
Haffy -- Not Apatite Rock
First Clue-- It is in Oxford County
YOP
Ye Olde Prospector 01-28-2007, 11:37 PM Hi Tat
It is similar to The Jail but deeper and a lot longer.
Clue #2 Within a few miles as the crow flies.
YOP
How about the now archived Devil's Den GC6E18?
Ye Olde Prospector 01-29-2007, 09:37 AM Hi Tat
Devils Den was further away. The nearby cache is still active just not a lot of visitors even though you can drive nearly to it in the Summer.
YOP
Ye Olde Prospector 01-29-2007, 12:40 PM Hey Dave 1976
You got it ! Near GC4E55 gues I am not the only one who looks around while caching. Good Job. Your turn now. Congrats.
YOP
Thanks Cliff, It was a good guess with a little research and a few hints that you gave. I will have to get there sometime.:)

firefighterjake 01-29-2007, 04:12 PM Looks like the scene from Becket's Pumpkin Island Lighthouse Rose Cache to me.
hollora 01-29-2007, 05:29 PM Oh yeah, Jake - I think you might be right...such a beautiful view!
OK jakes up to bat. Whatcha got Jake:D
firefighterjake 01-30-2007, 09:11 AM Let's take it inland a bit with this cache.
http://www.geocachingmaine.org/gallery/data/501/mysteryphoto2.jpg
Ye Olde Prospector 01-30-2007, 09:29 AM Just a guess but I am thinking it might be near GCPJV3 A.K.A. "The Beast"
YOP
firefighterjake 01-30-2007, 09:42 AM Just a guess but I am thinking it might be near GCPJV3 A.K.A. "The Beast"
YOP
Nope . . . a little more north.
Ye Olde Prospector 01-30-2007, 10:23 AM Next guess. Think there was a small school by this one Kineowatha GCPJV3 but can't remember much about it,quite a while since I cached in that area.
YOP
firefighterjake 01-30-2007, 11:31 AM Next guess. Think there was a small school by this one Kineowatha GCPJV3 but can't remember much about it,quite a while since I cached in that area.

Nope . . . guess there are more of these schoolhouses in existence than I knew.
Beach Comber 01-30-2007, 12:34 PM GCWDVD

One Room Schoolhouse

We have a "win-ahh"! I kind of thought NorthwoodsExplorer or one of our County cachers would have nabbed this one.
Haffy 01-30-2007, 02:05 PM One room School House GCWDVD Oops a little too late....lol
Beach Comber 01-30-2007, 06:50 PM Here you go........

Sudonim 01-30-2007, 06:58 PM Oooh, I know this one, "We don't need no education" GC2A46
Beach Comber 01-30-2007, 06:58 PM  Oh no TRF!
Beach Comber 01-30-2007, 06:59 PM Andy, you're it!!
Haffy 01-30-2007, 07:20 PM That photo sure looks familiar.....:D
Beach Comber 01-30-2007, 08:09 PM ;) hehehehehehe
Sudonim 01-30-2007, 09:38 PM This is a tough one, but I'll give progressive hints. It's in Maine, but none of the "regulars" here have done it.
That was too easy, Norway Bluff GC311E One of those "Boy I wish I'd done that when I was there" caches!!
Sudonim 01-30-2007, 10:56 PM Thanks Tom, now I'm fresh out of 'stumpers'.
Whatcha got?
I love waterfalls. Try this one. http://www.geocachingmaine.org/gallery/data/501/medium/IMG_7902_Small_.JPG
Ye Olde Prospector 01-31-2007, 05:03 PM Looks similar to the lower part of Angel Falls--- Jammer GC4887 but i think there is too much moss, although looks like less water flowing than when I was there last. My guess for now.
Nope, not Angel Falls. North of Angel Falls.
Here's another hint, this is tucked away in a remote place in Maine.
And, you haven't found it, so just guess like everybody else! :)
Sudonim 02-01-2007, 12:08 AM Is it the waterfall on your property ???
Ye Olde Prospector 02-01-2007, 01:37 AM Un-named falls on brook on West Kennebago Mountain??? Just a guess !
YOP
Sudonim, nope. You drove right by it and didn't stop. The price you pay for being goal oriented.
YOP, nope. But to get there: take the dirt roads to a paved road, then take the dirt roads. When you get there, read the cache description carefully or you'll miss it.
Hiram357 02-01-2007, 08:49 AM Here's another hint, this is tucked away in a remote place in Maine.
hmmm.... remote place...radio shack sells remotes... THE CACHE IS AT RADIO SHACK!!
Hiram357 02-01-2007, 09:13 AM anyone guess shin falls yet?
nope, not Shin Falls. South of Shin Falls.
Hiram357 02-01-2007, 09:37 AM nope, not Shin Falls. South of Shin Falls.
south of shin... ankle falls?
firefighterjake 02-01-2007, 09:45 AM south of shin... ankle falls?
That's good!!! :D :D
Nope, not Ankle Falls. The name of this waterfalls cache is right in front of you.
Starzz 02-01-2007, 10:45 AM How about Waterfalls, GCK7BK.
