Clyde has announced Version 7 of GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), but it is no longer free to registered users.

Registered users probably got the same email I did, but for those that didn't and are interested, here are a couple of links:

Link to GSAK (http://gsak.net/index.php).

New features (http://gsak.net/help/hs1060.htm) in V7.

I think every user of GSAK agrees that it is a great tool, but $15 for the upgrade seems steep...

For myself personally, I am quite happy with the version I have. I haven't even scratched the surface in figuring out all that GSAK has to offer,my main use is just transferring my GPX files and doing some simple filtering and that's about it. In the future if I do decide to upgrade then I don't think the $15 will be that much of a burden. Heck we spend $30 yearly to renew our Groundspeak membership and look at all the problems they have.I don't think one month goes by when I don't get the dreaded "Servor Busy Error" message or get my instant notifications 2 or 3 days later...lol. I think Clyde has done a superb job with GSAK and I'm sure he will not be doing the every other month upgrading that he has in the past. He will probably be concentrating on a couple of extensive upgrades a year now. Just my 2 cents.

Looking through the list up updates, I'm inclined to agree with you. Most of the updates are VERY technical, and do not really add to GSAK functionality.

I too got the email from Clyde about the new V7.0

I had been using GSAK for quite a while as a freebie but one day I had some problems trying to figure something out and sent an email to Clyde (who is from Australia I beleive) and surprisingly, he replied within 12 hrs and his email was very personable. I was impressed with that and sent him a donation to use his software w/o the commercials.
I have been very happy with it and have corresponded w/ him a few times and always get a timely response. I think he is very open to suggestions about improving his software.
Although I agree w/ Haffy that V6.0 probably does everything I need it to do at this point, I don't think that $15 is unreasonable for such a great little geocaching tool....

Clyde Rocks!

I could have had the update free since I sent an extra $20 less than a year ago, just to say thanks for the wonderful job he's doing. I didn't request the update free, as I could have, because I feel the same way now.

Hi Jason,
You are receiving this notification because you are a registered GSAK user
GSAK Version 7 has now been released.
For more information on upgrade pricing see http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=3835&view=findpost&p=21942
The good news is that my records indicate you qualify for a free upgrade to version 7 . . .

---

OK, so it would be free . . . but I suppose you're right . . . maybe he doesn't really like me!;) :D

I think the real reason I qualify for the free upgrade perhaps is due to the fact that I bought the software not all that long ago.

I should have read the emila a little more carefully, I guess I can get the upgrade for free too..
since I had sent in a donation a couple years ago.

I think the free upgrade is for a more recent purchase than 2 years ago though.

If it's any consolation Haffy I think I can speak for most of us here and say we still like you. ;) :D

The free upgrade is for new purchasers and for people who sent a donation outside of just not wanting the nag screen. Clyde does request you to ask for the free upgrade if you qualify, his way of thanking for all the support. Shoot, I can't get everything figured out on V6 now. I need a whole day long class on its features never mind adding more.

I used my GSAK program this weekend and saw the upgrade screen popup in the program and figured I had a minute to upgrade so I did. At no point did it prompt for $$'s. I just checked my email and it did state there would be a charge hmmm... interesting.

We did have some issues with the new version this weekend. We loaded 400 updated caches into the GPSr and PDA and headed out.... We got to the first cache and could not find it in the PDA  Hmmm this happened again with the next cache. I knew that both caches were in the file because I had loaded the same caches into the GPSr and the caches were in the GPSr. I looked again at the PDA and noticed that it had 400 geocaches titled geocache!!! All of the caches I had loaded did not load into the PDA with the cache name it loaded in as a file name of geocache ...... grrrrr. I did notice that a few screen options had changed with the cachemate export but must have missed something when I sent the file to the PDA. We did manage to do a few caches without the PDA. ... but it sure would have been nice to know what we were looking for!!!

Just a heads up incase anyone else upgrades.
