I just got a Palm TiX... and it's really starting to tix me off... (the file sharing programs are really anoying) I can't seem to get GSAK to download using their hot sync software, is there an easier way to transfer information?

GSAK doesn't go on a palm. It will send data to cachemate on the Palm. Give a call if you keep having trouble. I'll see if I can help you.

Yeah Cachemate is what you need on the Palm. Go here: http://www.smittyware.com/

What's the quality of the mp3s? Have you tried it though speakers? Lee is gonna get something new, figured if a Palm could play decent mp3s we could listen to them in the car or she can hook it up to the stereo in her craft attic, and save the trouble of a decicated mp3 player. Does it say anywhere just how big a card it will take? I can't find any info. Palm has 2 GB ones on their site, I'm wondering if it'd handle 8 GB.

And yes, cachemate goes on the Palm. You don't even need GSAK actually - I know the people that use it use it for a reason, and probably a god one - but I just load a PQ of my finds and a PQ of all my unfound Maine caches into the cachemate converter.

arrrrg!! cachemate bad!! palm bad! ug!! must hit with stick!! (I think I installed cachemate on the palm... the palm just doesnt know it yet)

the MP3 quality is pretty good (for the little speaker it has) it sounds like it does playin off of the computer. I bought the 2gig card to go with it, so far I've only put 4 songs on it, but I haven't even spilled over onto the card yet (the palm has 100mb without the card, but it also wont let you download large files to the palm without having the card in)

Haffy

You should be able to load your MP3's directly to the card without using the internal memory of the Palm at all. Just do it through a card reader.

I think that's what I did... I'm not sure yet, but that's the way it looks. I found that my media player on my PC likes my Palm, it connects and transfers everything for me! (made it really easy) :D I can't get cachemate to load though, I follow the directions but no icon appears on my palm..?

I never would have thought I would say this, but I love my Palm T/X and use it every day . . . I've consolidated all 103 (or so) of my lists that I had on scraps of paper (everything from ideas of where to place caches, fall to-do projects, my 2006 Christmas lists, house projects, ATV Club projects, oil boilers that I am considering purchasing, etc., listen to the MP3 songs that I burned from my CDs (the quality isn't half bad -- I use earbuds while snowmobiling . . . otherwise the sound is a bit tinny coming out of the rear speaker), schedule everything on to the calendar and have used the wi-fi aspect more than one time.

And of course, the second thing I never thought I would say . . . I'm now paper-less or as close to being paperless as possible. I still write out a list of planned caches in an area with a rough sketch of the order I want to do them, but otherwise no more sheets of paper for me.

So far I'm really enjoying it, I downloaded all my spreadsheets for work to it, so now I can do my officework while I'm at the site, and I saved about 1/2hr today just doing the paperwork as I go through the day. (I even stopped at staples to get a game pack, and dictionary/thesaurus) I finally figured out cachemate & gsak with the palm, now I just gotta figure out how to use the GPS with all of it. Can anyone explain the bluetooth and the beaming thing? My GPS has bluetooth, and my TiX has bluetooth, if I get 30 other people with the same units in the same room do we have a full set of teeth that can communicate??

Nope . . . what you get is a typical resident of Unity . . . as opposed to the folks in the rest of the County who don't have blue teeth (or even green teeth for that matter) . . . they're just missing half of their teeth. :D

I've used the word processing program a few times for editing purposes -- but without a keyboard the process is a bit slow for me. I thought about getting a game, but I already spend way too much time in the bathroom playing Solitaire. :D

Hey Dave, I just did an experiment for ya, I crawled behind my desk (almost got lost) and found the plug for my PC speakers, I made it out ok and plugged the speakers into the TX, and the quality is pretty darn good, sounds like it does as if I was playin the MP3 off the PC, there's little to no difference in the sound quality. :D

I've had my Zire 71 for several years now and use it for music often. I have plugged it into my Milwaukee job radio, used the ear buds, and now I have an input jack in my new geomobile. It sounds good on all account. It uses REAL jukebox software which is very simple to use. It's really no different than playing music through a computer or any MP3 player.

Well, I have to thank FFJ for being gracious enough to stop by and show Lee and myself his T|X. I think it might sound better through my stereo than CDs do, and it looks like it'll do all we do now with out PDAs and more. Lee liked it so much she thinks she's going to get us each one - how do I rate?:)

As soon as we get situated, we'll probably offer her old one for sale here if anyone is interested. It may be outdated and have no WIFI, but would still work great for anyone wanting to go paperless. I don't remember what it is, might be a Zire.

I was there to bear witness Dave . . . she definitely said something about buying two of those Palms.

I only wish I had some of my Celtic tunes loaded up on it . . . somehow you two don't seem like Godsmack or Disturbed fans which is what I had playing until I switched to a more mellow REM tune . . . as I mentioned I loaded up those fast-paced songs for cruising on the sled . . . not for relaxing while making scrapbooks. ;) :D

I saved the Word file I was working on the Palm that I had made changes to and then hotsynched it and opened up the file via the desktop icon/program. In setting up the Palm and documents to go you might have to tell the Palm where to send the files.

I gave up on using the graffitti program and instead use the "keyboard" -- I've gotten pretty quick typing out letters with the hunt-and-poke method -- OK, for short messages, but not so great for long detailed messages, notes to self, e-mails, BBS replies, etc.

The one thing I still haven't quite figured out (and this worries me a bit) is how to save my back-up files when I hot synch . . . Well, Lee did get two TX's - she's a good woman, eh?

We each had minor issues with each, Mine mostly because it's old and clunky, and hers because some of her software was too new - go figure. She was able to sync all the programs and data from her old Palm. Me.... not so much. Had to delete it all and start from scratch. But, other than cachemate and a list of people I never call, I didn't have much in there.

Thanks again for the looksee, FFJ, and by the way , we both like a broad range of music from Johnny Horton to ZZ Top. Godsmack .... well, we hear it coming from the kid's room. I think it's pretty good until they start singing ;-)

I was having transfer issues too (I think mostly user error though) But I upgraded from the basic software to the premium software (it was about $30) and it seems much more user freindly and i can use all of my excel spreadsheets on it (before the upgrade they either werent coming through or the formatting was all goofed up) I aslo upgraded the Ptunes (which I don't notice much difference but is still neato) :D

I remembered I had a few good programs on my old PDA, so I added them to the new one, and thought others might want to know about them too.

Tide Tool (http://www.toolworks.com/bilofsky/tidetool/) - This app will give you the tide times for nearly any city at any given time. Great for those low/high tide only caches!

Unit Converter Pro (http://www.unitconverterpro.com/product.html) - This app can convert between any measurements you could ever think of. You may want this on my next cache when you have to convert maxwell/centimeter2 to teslas. ;) With the Window's version (Shareware), you can export a palm version which only has the categories and units you want to use, or even create your own.

Best of all - both of these apps are freeware!

I also installed WiFileLT, which is on the Palm CD, so I could access my network shares from the palm. Works nicely!

Does anyone else have any software of use to others?

Just wonderin if anyone else that has a TX has experienced this problem before... So there I was, downloadin, updating, loggin, havin all sorts of fun with my TX.. all the sudden outta nowhere, IT LOCKED UP!!! so I thought, well no big deal, I pushed the power button and nothing... I had a little panic but managed to keep my cool, and pushed the handy reset button on the back of the unit... (this is where the fun began...) It reset, the palm os screen popped up (and I was relieved for a moment) then it popped up again, and again, and again, it wouldn't stop restarting. So using my caveman intuition I smacked it on the desk a couple times, nothin happend... it wouldn't quit restarting! So I did the hard restart, (as described in the palm help files online) and that fixed the problem, then I ran the hot sync and had to restart the unit, and now it's doing it again!!!!!

For all of us palm users out there, I cant stress enough how important it is to buy a good hard case for it. Brad has a real nice one that I like alot. not sure if it's coincidence or not, but I went through and deleted everything related to the palm and cleared the palm with a hard restart (erased everything) and went back through reinstalling everything one by one... with the exception of that file program Haffy suggested (my problems didn't start until I tried to hot sync to install that program) So we'll see how it goes....

I'm not sure if it was that program, but it was the last thing I hot synced before I had the troubles, and I did the hard reset and reinstalled everything but that program and havent had the troubles again. But from what I've read on the palm support site, that seems to be a pretty common problem with the palms when using 3rd party programs.

I wouldn't be suprised, there are already CDs and microchips that are built to deteriorate over time (fancy security features) I wouldn't be suprised if they dont slip a few of those in from time to time...

Actually, MS made their money by letting 3rd parties make software. Of course, that's a double edged knife, and a topic for another thread - and forum, perhaps. :)

I think Palm relies on their resets to cure most ills. None of those listed worked, Hiram? Oh never mind, I guess it did. I don't think you need any defrag type apps for Palm.

neither the regular or the soft reset worked when it went into the loop reset, I had to do the hard reset and erase everything. When I couldn't figure out how to get the hot sync program on my pc to not install everything again (even though there was nothing prompted for sync) I deleted everything on the pc to and just started over... That's a lot to do for one little problem (especially since I tried 3 times before I ended up deleting everything and starting over) But it all seems to be working ok now

after the 3 hours i spent last night getting my palm working again, then the 2hours i spent this morning redoing all the documents i lost for work... call me a lil scarred, I don't think I'll be attempting that file for a while... but on the positive side, i just got the bluetooth setup on my PC and I'm listening to the radio with my palm! (which is really nice because the walls of my apt are about 3ft thick and the only choice i have is between 98.5 and 107.9 with my clock radio) :D

Anyone know if there is an app for palms that is a diagnostic utility that would tell me if there are any problems with my palm or apps that I download to it?

Well after much much much working and trying and deleting and reinstalling and trying more I have come to this conclusion of Palm OS 5...
IT HATES SOFTWARE!!! :D I found that most of my problems were from 3rd party programs (those not sold by palm) which was disapointing because I had to deleting my Instant Messengers... but I found a better program (it's like that triton program) that allows you to log onto your AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, ect... it's called Mundu IM ( https://messenger.mundu.com/ ) I've been trying out different utility programs for maintaining the palm, so far I haven't found anything promising. Most software made for the earlier Palm OSs causes system errors and crashes. (my yahoo and aim were for earlier OSs) after getting rid of this and a few other programs I have not had any problems yet. I'm going to run it for a few days with my current setup, then I'm going to try putting cachemate and some other programs back on. :D

P.S.
Palm Tech support is worthless...
