View Full Version : Bow Hunting?
Team U.S.Eh? 09-11-2008, 07:39 PM I took some friends to the Run-A-Way Cache (GCWVAB)today. As we were leaving, a fully cammoed guy was walking in with his bow and arrows:eek:. We did a double take as none of us are hunters, but we do where blaze orange when caching during hunting season.....problem is, we didn't know it was hunting season, nor can I find any evidence online that it is......am I missing something:confused:?

hollora 09-11-2008, 08:04 PM It open bear season, too.
Team U.S.Eh? 09-11-2008, 08:12 PM Guess it pays to read a little further...didn't see the extended season dates;)......glad we didn't find out the hard way:o
fins2right 09-11-2008, 08:23 PM You should be alright, as long as you don't cache with antlers on. (seriously. When I was stationed in upstate N.Y. anti-hunting folks would go into the woods with deer suits on. )
Hiram357 09-11-2008, 08:23 PM yeaup, no orange required for bow hunting, and if you see a big pile of donuts in the middle of the woods, just go the other way, trust me, you didn't find the end of the rainbow. :D
ltlindian 09-12-2008, 08:36 AM My husband is a bow hunter and unlike rifle where you can shoot from really far away, bow hunting (obviously) requires you to be much closer to the animal and have a VERY clear shot. It is highly unlikely that anyone that close would mistake a human for a deer/moose whatever.
Besides, just make a lot of noise while caching and you'll scare both hunter and hunted away! :)

I'm not a hunter . . . and call me crazy . . . but I can't recall ever hearing of any bow hunter accidentally shooting themself, their hunting partner or other folks. I don't think bow hunters would be an issue for geocachers other than it scaring off potential prey.

Whahhh mmmmfpphhhhhh . . . sorry . . . my mouth was full from all of these jelly donuts that I just found in middle of the woods . . . Jake Bait? ;):D
Gob-ler 09-12-2008, 03:02 PM And, most bow hunters will not be upset about you being there. Actually your being there probably helps to get the deer up and moving.
I knew the donuts comment was coming from FFJ. Go figure!
dubord207 09-12-2008, 03:22 PM There are very few unethical bow hunters and a long shot is 40 yards, most shots even closer then that. When I bow hunt, you could walk right under a tree I'm in and you'd never know I was there unless I wanted you to know.
But during the "silly season", i.e., the regular rifle season on deer in November, wear your orange and stay clear of places that attract large groups of hunters. I do deer hunt during that season, but I try to "get it over" as quickly as possible. Normal law-abiding people turn in outlaws during this season, and crazy people... well throw away the keys! I'd simply stay clear of common hunting areas in November. :)
Team U.S.Eh? 09-12-2008, 04:09 PM :DWell I really do trust you all, but it was stil a little unnerving....I think the dog and I will wear bright colors all the same. You know, crawling around on the ground looking for a cache, I just may be mistaken for some wird animal.....yeti maybe? :D

Baiting police, are we?
Opalsns 09-13-2008, 02:39 AM As long as Chaney isn't around, you should be OK!!

brdad 09-13-2008, 06:32 AM I think the only reason there may be less unethical bow hunters around is only because there are less bow hunters around. Percentage wise, I would imagine the number of unethical hunters would be close regardless of weapon chosen. Add to that as was stated that the length of a shot being shorter, the opportunity to do stupid stuff is lessened when bow hunting, which drops the number of incidents - but doesn't necessarily mean the ethics level is greater than other hunters.
I must say, though, I think I'd rather get shot by a bullet than some of those arrows...

I am a bow hunter and I am the total opposite. I scout my area out ahead of time and find out the deers normal movement patterns and then I put my deer stand in the ideal spot where they will walk. If someone disturbs there patterns then I get pretty upset. Hunting from a deer stand is a lot different then hunting with a gun. You have to get a deer within 30 yards of your deer stand to be able to shoot at it. Also the deer has to be unaware that your there because if it is the slightest bit aware something is different it will be on edge and it is fast enough to be able to dodge an arrow. Unlike a person hunting with a gun, they can shoot a deer on the run or over 200 hundred yards out in some cases.

HehHeh . . . I came home from work several years ago to find that my wife had made little bow ties out of florescent orange marking tape since she was concerned about hunters. ;):D
fins2right 09-15-2008, 05:27 PM Baiting police, are we?
In the Woods  !! That would require that I get out of my Cruiser. Not going to happen (Unless they are Krispy Kremes:D) We save the stale donuts for the Trout Troopers :)

Oh this is too good to be true . . . you aren't a cop in Oakland are you? If memory serves me correctly our very own Hiram357 had a run in with some Boys in Blue in Oakland. Ah, those memories of his. ;):D
On a serious note, if you are a police officer in Oakland you might know a former colleague of mine -- Jeff Hunter -- a graduate of Unity College and an EMT (we ran together on the ambulance.)
EvilHomer 09-16-2008, 10:33 AM Did someone say DOHNUTS?

You got me pegged, I'm the short, fat one. :) I know "babyface" hunter quite well in fact. When we meet, i'll tell you about his first cruiser accident and the language used on a police radio.:D:D Can Hiram remember the run in, or was he a little foggy:p?

It never ceases to amaze me how many public safety employees turn out to be geocachers -- EMTs, Paramedics, Firefighters, Police Officers, Guards, etc.
Yeah, Jeff does have that "baby face" doesn't he? And yeah, I'd like to hear the cruiser accident story.

Yeah, speaking of that . . . I've got permission to get a campfire going from Friday night straight on to Saturday (as long as it doesn't become a raging inferno) and I think I may even be able to borrow my Dad's Kubota to twitch wood with . . . and/or borrow my Uncle's woodsplitter.
I have alerted both the Fire Department and Ambulance Squad that you will be in the area this weekend.;):D
