I'm planning on focusing a feature in the November Newsletter on favorite cache locations and stories. This was spurred by a post by DFK. If you would like to share your stories about your favorite cache location, please do! If you'd like to voice your thoughts about what makes a great cache location, that's great too!

In September, the newsletter contained a feature around must-have cache characteristics, so I would like to focus this feature on cache locations and not other cache characteristics. Talk about the location you're brought to and why it's so enjoyable. Thanks so much!

What is the deadline on this one - home from Eustis - woot - fond memories. Just a tad tired. You missed a wicked good event!

See our log entry for this cache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=54cbcc7d-a7ac-4809-93e2-523ee903a1d1). The way caching in Maine used to be.

Want an absolutely gorgeous location? Try this cache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=76c5ed9f-0770-477f-bd71-0b78a326c948).

And, throwing modesty aside, I ask you to look at the latest log entry - Sep 19th - for this cache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=5127b8f0-9321-4603-9186-2656ad1f60d9).

That's what makes a great cache...

Thanks for the post! Many cachers enjoy the hikes through woods, across streams, or to great views...
keep 'em coming!

Sheesh! Three or four years ago, that's what geocaching was all about, and the GREAT hikes and GREAT views were what made geocaching in Maine special.

Well, I just turned 60, so I'm now OFFICIALLY old and out of touch. Grumpier, too... ;);)

Try my "Pickle Hill Overlook" cache, that I placed up above Flagstaff Lake. That's quite a nice location. Am I wrong to toot my own horn?....Don't toot your horn on Pickle Hill; you may attract an amorous Moose!

I thought about this for just a short time and came up with this one as probably one of my all time favorites....

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=1812ccd4-e4b1-4324-ad07-cd23bf0191bc

Especially when the owners were with us that day and decided to have a big laugh and not HELP US in any way fashionable :eek Imagine looking for hockey pucks in the middle of nowhere. The final was absolutely georgeous though and worth every bit of blood ,sweat ,and tears to get it.

DeathWish #1 (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=4d584a4e-cc03-4126-8b52-b78d3ff9dea7) by LaughingTerry (GCRCAJ) Will probably always be my all time favorite cache. This cache came early in my caching days, I did it in the early spring, with the water rushing over the falls. The challenge of just getting to the cache, then finding this well hidden cache as the water rushed by only a few feet away made this cache live up to it's name. I know these types of caches aren't for everyone, but for me they are my favorites.

No, you're not wrong at all. If you check my log, you'll find that this cache was our favorite of our as yet brief caching career. But we have done over 1300, so we certainly have a few to compare it to and it's number 1 for us!!!:)

Oh yeah - Brdad's "You Sank My Battleship (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=3cd31003-b73f-4ba5-8818-ad0695143186)" has to be one of the great ones in Maine. A classic!

Sheesh! We did this one over 4 years ago. Haffy & me in my car, The G Team in another... We had printed maps, radios, cell phones... We took 1/2 of Bangor and G Team took the other half. That was fun!

I love the Pickle Hill Overlook cache! Not a bad drive, roads fine (if you don't take the wrong turn and end up at the gravel pit), fabulous views! I can't believe I'd never been down that road before. I had been by there in a kayak but not by land.

Basically, my favorites are woods caches, near water, peaceful, quiet spots with no muggles, not too hard to get to. Then the cache should be clean and dry, no soggy logbooks, no ripped and dirty bags, no trash. In other words, tended once in awhile.

Other favorites are: Molechunkamunk:Millbrook (micro); Caratunk Cache; Carrying Place Falls Cache; B52 Crash Site (no water, but nice); Mountain View Pond; Lily Bay Cache; and I loved Heald Stream Rails to Trails, it even had a moose to help us find the cache :) ; Jolly Roger; Rangeley Celebration; the Geo Zoo series; Wild Apple..... well, you get the idea. And Stonehouse Blues even though there was no water...

B-52 Crash Stash was a lot of fun. To imagine what those guys went through and survived, its a nice monument and very educational. I also love French's Mountain. The views of long pond are hard to beat, and the hike up is a lot of fun, but not overwhelming for the kids. Center Hill Cache in Mt. Blue State Park might just have the best view of fall leaves in the state. With Webb pond in the foreground and the Tumbledown range changing colors, that's about as pretty as you can get.

French's Mountain is on my short list of fave caches, as well.

My opinion on what makes a cache area a more worthy find, than another has changed over the past 4 years. I used to marvel at what I could find in my town, that I either didn't know about or were unaware it even existed. Today I have become more interested in caches that require some effort to find. Like the Moat Mountain Challenge/Red Ridge Trail caches. Or the Eustis Challenge, due to the variety of places and the fact that it requires you to paddle to some of them.

Mountains, streams, lakes and rivers, the caches that are really out in the woods, on trails that noone has been on in maybe a year. Making that final bushwhack of .25 to the find. The older caches that give you no child waypoints, so finding the parking and trailhead, either make you plan or figure out your best access. Challenge me, not just on the find, but on the whole thing. Find an area that has a few of these, and I'm there. Of coarse, I'll grab the guardrails along the way, as long as I can walk to them.

I have only done 160 caches so I don't have a lot under my belt yet :). The cache I enjoyed the most was Salt Bay Cache. It was a beautiful day, near the water, and a fairly long hike. I only did a couple caches that day. When I go for too many caches in a day I don't get to appreciate them as much.:rolleyes:

I did enjoy the Face your fears cache just for the fun of having done it.:D

Cold hearted orb, that rules the night;
and hides the colors from our sight.
Red is gray, and yellow, white;
and we decide which is right;
and which is an illusion.

Any self respecting hippy will know what that's from!:p

So far the only gray is starting to show up in my beard. I grew up on a steady diet of Moody Blues, however (Thanks dad:))

I remember my grandparents talking about the Moody Blues.

I think this thread is about cache locations, however. Someone should penalize whoever it is that hijacked this thread!
