Is anyone interested in an overnight trip to an old restored ski cabin?

There is a cabin that sleeps 6, with a fireplace, tables and firewood! The trail in is about 2-3 miles and climbs about 500 feet. Tents are allowed also. The trail is open to skiers, snowshoes and snowmobiles!! (Sorry, no atv's) Dogs are allowed 24/7!
I thinking about making this an event on the Jan 17th weekend, if there is enough interest and if the cabin is available. This might be the perfect oportunity to try out your gear before the BIG winter campout!
Kaching Karen 12-22-2008, 09:05 PM I went on this hike to the cabin with tat on Sunday. We were both impressed. Pulling a sled to the cabin will be moderate to difficult work, but can be done at any pace. I can't wait to do this and will cohost the event with tat. The hiking/snowshoeing during the day should be fun.
vicbiker 12-22-2008, 10:23 PM Can I go. Please. Please. Can I. In case that wasn't clear I would like to go.

That's not fair, I'll bring special wood just for vic! :D
vicbiker 12-23-2008, 05:45 PM That's not fair, I'll bring special wood just for vic! :DI'm having such a hard time believing you would say something like that after all the nice wood I gave you. Granted it was all wood that could not be split by me, but you are so much younger and stronger that I didn't feel it would be a problem for you.:D
Mainiac1957 12-23-2008, 05:54 PM Atoms are easier to split than some of that wood was. We had an engineer there (Tom) with all his protractors, slide rules and logarithms and he couldn't get it to part either. I think they just wore down the woods' will to stay in one piece by constantly calling it bad names.:p Or was that you they were calling bad names.:D Hmmm I can't remember. Anyway, that was some bad a** wood you had there.

and don't forget to mention that my enviormentally friendly chainsaw was also unable to even scratch that stuff...:rolleyes::p:D
Vic's wood had much more heating value: Splitting only one log was enough to keep warm for hours! The wood at the cabin will only warm once, then it is done.

this is very true, but vic's wood is more expensive, because you have to drink a lot more to cut it... well... splinter it into burnable peices :D:D:D
Kaching Karen 01-01-2009, 03:35 PM The Cabin Fever Event for Jan 17-19 in Camden Hills State Park has been published. If there are any questions ask away! Heck, tat or I might even know a couple of answers to go with the questions.

Mainiac1957 01-01-2009, 03:37 PM Any chance of a correct answer from you two? I know that might be a lot to ask.;):p
hollora 01-01-2009, 06:18 PM Nice looking cabin!

Yes there is a chance. Fire away.
Karen and I (and a couple of non-cachers) hiked up from the main campground entrance on rt. 1 yesterday. The trail is not only shorter, but much easier. All of the climbing is done in the first 3/4 mile!! The cache page is now updated with new parking coords and info.
To give you an idea of the effort needed, it is much, much more than Bradbury SP or Eustus :), less than twice as far as the Winter Campout Event, and just slightly farther but the same elevation change as Mount Blue SP. The big difference is the climb is on the way in, so leaving will be much easier and having a cabin means we'll need less gear. There is a water pump, but is labeled "not fit to drink, must be purified".
attroll 01-05-2009, 01:51 AM I did not notice this before but this event is being held on a Sunday. Shouldn't it be on a Saturday?
Not everyone has the 19th off from work.
It is from Friday evening to Sunday late afternoon.
attroll 01-05-2009, 02:19 PM It is from Friday evening to Sunday late afternoon.
The event date on the cache page says 1/18/2009 (Sunday). That is the only reason I brought it up. Is Sunday the actual date of the event?
attroll 01-05-2009, 02:28 PM What is the name of the campground on Route 1 where the parking is?
Where is Steven's Corner because I do not see it on the map?
Is there any chance at getting the coordinates to the two different parking areas?
The campground is called "Camden Hills State Park"
Steven's Corner is on the opposite side of Camden Hills State Park (from the campground)
The parking coords are:
Main Campground (Easier hike) (Parking Area) N 44° 13.809 W 069° 02.948 Steven's Corner (Parking Area) N 44° 16.800 W 069° 02.687
Snowmobiles can come from either side.
Kaching Karen 01-05-2009, 09:00 PM Tom, shouldn't we change the date to the 17th.... ?
Bring your long undies!!, it's gonna be nippy!!

Kaching Karen 01-11-2009, 08:16 AM I can't get the volumn loud enough on his voice. Anyone else got this problem? Happy snowy Sunday, everyone!

Have discovered there is a sound adjustment on the You-Tube screen too - a little speaker to the right of the red line under the picture - make sure that is turned up. Nice video - good luck!
That was too funny!! And some neat ideas too.
I had had to put my system volume on high (the little speaker icon all the way on the bottom left in the sys. tray) and then use the YouTube volume control to raise the volume for voice and lower it when the music came on.
Kaching Karen 01-11-2009, 01:58 PM Nice to know I do more things right than wrong. That might be important in below zero weather! The guy is kind of strange. I'm not sure I would want to meet him on a solo trip in the woods. If he were disguised as a manetee (sp?) in the snow, I might run....with my pack and sled on my back!

Hiram357 01-11-2009, 10:26 PM pft! that's a scorcher compared to some of the prevoius campouts wouldn't ya say??? ;) :D

Ya, that's a bit of an understatement there Hiram, don't ya think. This weekend is looking like a runner up however. I can't wait. This is going to be a long week at work. So are you and Steph coming or what?

understatement... heh, the colder the better. :D
unless all your sleeping bags have split open, and your down jacket, and your boots...
I still haven't replenished my gear... I priced out what it would cost to replace my too far damaged stuff, and it doesn't look good. I tried repairing one of my bags, but the material just keeps coming apart, it's done for... but i've still got working snowshoes. So we'll probably just come down for the day.
attroll 01-13-2009, 02:00 AM You can get a good zero degree down bag for $149. What else do you need Hiram?

I think he wants to know how to get Medawookie out there to warm it up for him! LOL!
Sheesh! I haven't done any winter camping since my Boy Scout days-MANY years ago - and I don't plan on starting now! LOL! Have fun, guys!
Ekidokai 01-14-2009, 05:28 PM That sure sounds like fun.
You wont catch me out camping in that kind of weather unless somrthing tragic happens and I am forced to.
masterson of the universe 01-14-2009, 05:46 PM It may be pretty darn cold outside this weekend but I bet once you get a fire going in the cabin you'll bring it right up to the mid 50's. Add in some booze and you'll be plenty warm.
Ekidokai 01-14-2009, 05:56 PM I keep forgetting about the booze.
Count me in.
Not!
attroll 01-17-2009, 01:46 AM Here are those crazy guys again from my Hammock Forums web site. Lets see if you guys can hit -26 this weekend.

vicbiker 01-17-2009, 09:27 AM Rick thanks for the link...really enjoyed the video...just wonder how they do all that talking in -26 temps without any breath showing in the video.
Mainiac1957 01-18-2009, 02:35 PM Just got back from the event/camping weekend. It ended up being just the Rescue Rangers staying the second night. Had great food and great weather as usual. Thanks to Karen and Tom for putting it on. Hoped to see more people there than we did, but that the nature of it.
vicbiker 01-18-2009, 05:52 PM I was really bummed to have missed this one, for a number of reasons. But the JD Foundation has to take priority over everything else if we are to accomplish our mission. Cheryl and I are still in awe over all that came out of this weekend. Again let me say I wish I had been there with all of you.
