View Full Version : For once, I love Lewiston
fins2right 04-19-2009, 08:26 PM Once upon a midnight dreary I worked as a Bull for the railroad. I had to spend a LOT of time in Lewiston as trains were constantly derailing, being broken into and otherwise screwing up there. I worked more often in L/A then any other part of Maine, including Portland and it was never a pleasant experience.
Those days are gone and so far twice this year I have returned to the area to cache. I love it! The amount of caches and the variety of caches are fantastic. I never knew exactly how rural L/A could be or how pretty. Today we found deer, geese, wild turkey (the animal kind :D) waterfalls, river views and find #400. Combined with the fact that today was beautiful and bug free made it a great day caching.
I just wanted to take a quick second to thank KG, Martes, Gob-ler and all of the cachers who have made the L/A area such a target rich environment for caching. I was just looking at the map and realized that I have not even made a dent in the area yet. I will return! Thank you!!
brdad 04-19-2009, 08:36 PM A few years ago Lee and I went caching up in the Moosehead Lake area and never saw one animal, not even a moose. The next weekend we were caching in Auburn and one came out and crossed the road right in front of us. And similar to your post, I have never been a big fan of the area itself, but there are some original caches to be found, and a good number of them.
number seven 04-20-2009, 07:16 AM Last night as I lay in bed looking at the stars I thought 'Where the hell is the ceiling?---I take it that you stopped at one of the fine gin mill's in Greenville. Woody's maybe? And still no moose or turkey's .. I must not have been there..

Your right you must not be there, but I have to admit you are out there!
Trick or Treat 04-20-2009, 10:27 AM I know how lucky I am to have started caching in Freeport, tucked in between LA and Freeport/Cumberland. We are surrounded by caches! Congrats on 400.
kymeejay 04-20-2009, 05:50 PM Congratulations on your 400th find. Outstanding!
hollora 04-20-2009, 06:50 PM Way to go on 400!
dubord207 04-20-2009, 07:23 PM Way to go Tracy! I think I have a love-hate relationship with LA caches. There's a pile of them for sure, some easy but many tough. The Hookers Vitamin series is a case in point...some nearly immpossible! Then there's luccaron caches.... one very tricky Frenchman for sure. Mon dieu!!!
And KG puts out very few easy caches and gob-ler has one in front of his office that will make you crazy.
All in all, I love heading to this area, always knowing a few DNF's are likely!:)
Trick or Treat 04-20-2009, 07:51 PM Dan, let me know the next time you're up for a Lewiston caching trip and we'll meet you there...with beer!
hollora 04-20-2009, 07:56 PM Woot - can I join the fun OR crash the party! LOL
Trick or Treat 04-20-2009, 07:57 PM Well yeah!
Sabby 04-20-2009, 08:29 PM I had a good time there about a month age and wish I had more time to spend caching.
dubord207 04-21-2009, 06:27 AM Thanks for the offer. Might be a couple of weeks before we're ready to hit Lewiston again. We'll let you know! Have a great week!:)
Dan, let me know the next time you're up for a Lewiston caching trip and we'll meet you there...with beer!
Mapachi 04-21-2009, 10:34 AM When I first started caching, the Lewiston area actually scared me because of the shear density of caches. Sorta overwhelmed me! I'm slowly chiseling away at them! Kudos to The Goddess, Kacky, the Hookers, Dot, Luc and the Turkey Man.
Congrats, Tracy, on 400 finds!
attroll 04-21-2009, 11:08 AM Well, when you are ready to hit Lewiston let me know. I would like to join in too if I am free.
shuman road searchers 04-21-2009, 05:46 PM Having only found about a third in Lewiston I would be interested in a road trip. I would not want to miss Patrick and Dan together caching!
It is been a while since I have done a Lewiston run, Let me know and if I can I would be up for that.
Gob-ler 04-23-2009, 07:01 AM I don't know when you all are coming to L/A, but let me know, maybe we can do lunch or something.
Mainiac1957 04-23-2009, 03:42 PM I hope to be hitting town fairly early afternoon tomorrow. Get a few caches in before I meet up with Greg (Kathie's son) at his house. Plan to get some caching in. See how it goes I guess.
