I know it may be a bit early, but I'm doing it . . . Step 1 is admitting I have a problem and I realize I have a problem with not going and doing Events so this is an attempt to remedy that problem.

Consider this advance warning. Mark your calendars. Load up your ATVs. Head for the hills . . . well, really it will not be that bad.

----------------

Tread Lightly: ORCAS on ATVs Event (pending approval)

July 17-19 (actual event: July 18th (SAT) at 7 p.m.
Arndt's Aroostook River Lodge and Campground
Presque Isle, ME

The plan is to meet together to geocache and ATV . . . as one ATVer/geocacher in my local ATV Club said the other day when I said I was attempting to organize this event . . . "Wow. Geocaching, ATVing and camping . . . does it get any better?" The Answer: Only if you're doing all three of those things in the County.

If you haven't geocached in the County before you're in for a real treat -- lots of great caches in some great locations.

If you haven't ATVed in the County before you're in for a real treat -- this is ATV heaven with folks who not only tolerate ATVs -- they welcome ATVs (on my first trip to the County I actually rode my ATV on the sidewalks in Van Buren (all legal) and a passing police officer waved to us.)

However, as good as the caching and ATVing is the only thing better is the legendary Aroostook County hospitality . . . so come on up.

If you have an ATV, great . . . some of us may go for a short ride on Friday night depending on when folks arrive. Otherwise, we'll be planning for a 9 a.m. departure ride. Right now my tentative plans are to ride down to Mars Hill, ride up the mountain if it is open and then up the border and over to Easton -- this is a fantastic all-day ride with the trail varying from an old rail trail to woods trails and old dirt roads. Highlights include the view from Mars Hill, seeing the Border Markers of the US/Canada and of course the sweet, sweet smell of those County potatoes being transformed into McCain french fries in Easton.

At 7 p.m. we'll hopefully be back, freshly showered and sitting around a campfire to swap TBs, geocaching stories and share information about geocaching.

If you do not have an ATV you have two options.
Option A) Contact me and if someone has space on an ATV we'll get you on the ATV for the day.

Option B) Come on up and geocache during the day and join us in the evening ($3 guest pass required at the campground) . . . or stay all night.

For folks with ATVs, we may attempt another short ride on Sunday morning as well.

A few words about Arndt's . . .

* ATVs are allowed to ride to the trail only. No riding ATVs in the campground to go to the bathhouse or office.

* Pets are also OK, but they ask that they be on a leash and you clean up after them.

* You can call Arndt's at 764-8677 to make a reservation. Be sure to mention the Geocaching/ATV Event . . . if there are enough of us we may get a discount. There are tent sites and RV sites . . . I've been told they will attempt to group us together. Rates are $22/night.

Sure, it's a long drive for some folks, but trust me on this (you can trust a firefighter can't you?) . . . it's well worth the drive if you enjoy ATVing and/or geocaching.

Well, that's all for now . . . yeah, I can't quite believe it either . . . my very first geocaching event . . . surely a sign of the Apocalypse I know! :) ;)

Aaron and I have talked . . . due to a low projected turn out we have opted to cancel this event for this year . . . we'll try again next year perhaps.

;);)

no no, he doesn't show up to his own events...

when I post the one for in the fall he'll show up to that one

this one had low turnout for i think a few reasons 1) it focused on cachers with atvs (which they're really aren't that many of) and 2) it was pretty friggen far away. I think that because of those and that gas prices are back on the rise again, oh yeah, and because it was Jake's event:p, that there wasn't that great of a turnout for it.

oh well, it was a good try jake. and don't worry, there will still be the traditional tread lightly event this fall. :D

Opps, I made my reservation already....Well, we will be looking for an alternative that weekend. That shouldn't be too hard to find. Next year ATVing maybe!! Thanks for trying.

Hey Jake why don't you do a Newport to Dover on the RR Bed. There are 15-17 Rails-To-Trails caches along the way and you can finish up at my Low's Bridge cache. This would give you an idea who might be interested in such a trip. And if anyone wanted to do it by car they are all fairly close to a crossing the most would be a quarter mile.

Just a thought.

I've done that ride so much by now by ATV and sled that I'm kind of tired of doing it . . . at least by sled it's a quick ride for the most part. This event would have been more of a camp, cache and ride event.

Speaking of ATVing in that general area though . . . I went out with Bgrffdave and Hiram a few weeks back and "discovered" Devil's Head near Harmony . . . I was a bit surprised to find that no one had placed a cache there as it seemed like a prime location.

I hear you about the frequency of that trip although it still surprises me to see 20-40 trailers unloading every weekend day. It would however be a GOOD trip for anyone that wanted to ATV and cache together. We purposely held off on several of those caches in order to be able to do it as an ATV ride, and it made for a long day hitting them all.

As far as Devils Head.....that area just re-opened to ATV's last year. We thought about placing one up there years ago, but access, parking, etc. was up in the air.

From what I've seen at events.....I'm a representative of the Many that don't respond to attend an event. There are many factors involved in attending an event...let alone one so far away. I wanted to pull my RV up there so the family would go along. I planned on attending and was making arrangements for caching in Canada as well. Now I have to decide on caching that area alone.....or holding off while holding my breath that it'll happen next year. I like Robt's idea! Just look at how many respond to attend....and how many more do.

Sheesh! Dude, you're on my list. You will be REQUIRED to attend the WWWWWW6 event next winter - tentatively scheduled for the 3d Saturday in
February. NO EXCUSES! :D:D

(I may even get someone to shanghai FireFighter Jake.)

Ok....advanced notice. The tentative event date is now on my calendar. So that makes atleast two of us and the event should happen...right!? ;) I look forward to it. I didn't mean to bust firefighterjakes chops. Hosts aren't the only ones that make sacrifices and arrangements for an event. So as frustrated as he's feeling... he's not alone I'm sure. I'll just have to find a different ATV to borrow should it happen next year....and well I'll just have to make it up to the wife who took a day off work.

Caching in the County is well worth doing . . . even without an ATV.

Actually, rumor has it that I actually almost made it to one of your WWWW events . . . Hiram claims he actually spotted me come in the front door, but by the time he grabbed his camera I was gone back into the tree line. ;):D

I thought we already established that "Heidi" is simply a figment of my imagination and isn't real . . . no wait a minute . . . we established that she is real, but she is really just an actress being paid to play the part of my wife, right? ;):D
