This post by Bruce got me looking into the recent new members that have joined this website and I am amazed at the numbers we have. Now if just 50% of the members who have joined would contribute just one post or article to the site we would have a great time reading it all and would also have some interesting conversations for sure. So who are the lurkers anyway? Don't be shy. We have a great photo gallery and some great articles written from some of our members so please join in.

He has two caches out, I think. "Roger That" and "Sign On the Dotted Line". I loved the nano he had on the sign, told him so, asked where he bought it because I wanted one like it (it wasn't such a pain to rewind the log and get it back in). He wrote back and told me he made the nano! Then he sent me one, the makings for another plus the instructions. The nano he sent me is already out and waiting for people to find it. The rest I sent to Mapachi who is happily making them as swag. So atricapillus is a really nice guy and he may come to my Eustis event in September. I think he said he used to be a member of geocachingmaine and thought he would join again.

Sorry, Bruce, I've already been there. And it's a great place! I wish someone would visit the cache I put out at Maine Huts & Trails Flagstaff Lake Hut..... Vic and Number Seven found it last fall and TAT tried in the dark of winter but no one, nothing since... I left a coin in there that wants to travel. It's a 1.8 mile walk in from trailhead parking but you can also go by pontoon boat (for a price) from Eustis.

Westport Island is located approximately 50 miles northeast of Portland, Maine. The island is separated from the mainland by two coastal salt-water rivers, the Sheepscot River and the Back River. The island is connected to the mainland at the Northwest by one modern bridge, built in 1972 over a slim gap in the Back River called Cowsegan Narrows. Although completely surrounded by water, it is bounded across tidal water by the towns of Wiscasset, Edgecomb, Southport, and Georgetown.

The problem is, anyone who joins GCM.org can immediately post to the forums. That guy joined at 3:30 AM, and when I checked new members at 6:00 AM, I immediately identified him as a spammer and notified Rick and Brdad (assistant web site administrator). They deleted the account, but by that time the damage had been done.

What is needed, is a validation system whereby NO new member is allowed to post in the forums until they are validated.

. . ..

We also had a spammer sign on today. He joined GeocachingMaine.org at 5:58 PM. I alerted Attroll/Brdad in a message at 5:59. At 6:03 the spammer posted a message. But when I started this post on new members at 6:12, the spammer had already been deleted and the spam message had also been deleted. Way to go, guys!

And here I was sitting at the computer a) wondering where will I get my generic pharmacy medications for less, b) thinking about where I could find some cheap ****** for sale, c) pondering if I shouldn't give out my bank account number and social security account number to some deposed Nigerian prince who would handsomely reward me by taking all of the money out of my account but promising me a half million dollars and d) wondering if there wasn't some exotic lady wanting to meet me tonight. ;):D

Hey Bruce, what would be your guess as to the percentage of new members you've seen this year that have joined as donating members?

Sheesh! I'm just glad my name isn't Haffy! LOL!

But to answer the question, I have no idea. I just see the new member notices. Perhaps Rick could tell you, but in my opinion, it's pretty small - less than the 10% Haffy suggested. I think Rick mentioned one time that we have 20-something "donating" members.

Haffy
11-17-2009, 07:08 PM
Yeah that estimate was just wishful thinking on my part, probably only 1% if that.

Well, since we currently have 1605 valid members, that a "donating" rate of about 2% of ALL members! LOL!

How sad,but I bet the percentages aren't much better for GC.com and their memberships either.

True, but if you factor in how many regular visitors we have, it is a better percentage. Many 'members' are people who signed up to ask one question or to check on the coin or some other short term reason.

So if the other 1550 plus folks just kicked in 10 bucks, we'd have over $15,000 in the bank to do whatever. Just imagine what that kind of money could do to this organization-webgroup.

Those of you that cache in the central Maine area must have noted that Tim and Ashley, TimAsh329, have returned from the west coast and are re-activating and replacing the caches they archived when they moved to Arnold land. They had a pile of fun and varied caches out when they left and I'm certain they'll kick it up a notch with their return from earthquakes, mudslides, wild fires, smog, Propositions and bankruptcy.

This is why I love Maine! Welcome back guys!:)

Since we also block their ISP as well as ban the user name, they have to keep trying. LOL!

Hello everyone!

My name is Jim and I'm a Geocacher first. I cache under the Geonick 'GeocoinGuy' for obvious reasons. I am 7 finds short of 700 (Huzzah!). Yes, I design and produce Geocoins too! I don't consider it a job, although I don't do anything else.. :p

I guess its not a job if you enjoy what you do. Anyway - I am very creative, I toss around some wild but valued ideas to see if they can stick anywhere. I like to place caches creatively (Check out GC25FKT... so far, rave reviews - it's a birdhouse!).

I'd be happy to send the blueprints to anyone who wants to build one, along with some progress pictures to make sure you are on the right track. Also, if anyone is interested in siggy items or personal coins and need some help, don't hesitate to ask for help, guidance, direction or whatever - I'd be happy to assist.

I have a lot of friends on this board, and was invited - so if you don't mind a West Coastie here... yada yada yada :D

Hope to bring something of value to this board... I may not show up for everything - but I'm usually good for a donation to events! ;)

Happy days!
~J
