View Full Version : Looking for Fellow JEEP Cachers in Southern Maine
CARoperPhotography 08-20-2009, 02:30 PM Hello to all,
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Chadd Roper, and I am a Jeeper/Cacher in the Kennebunk area. I am looking for others in the area who enjoy both of the activities.
I'd like to find some good caches around the state as well, which are Jeep accessible, and share caches that I have found which are fun for off roaders alike.
I have a 2008 Jeep Wrangler JK, highly modified:
2.5in TeraFlex lift
32in BFG Mud Terrains
AEV Snorkel
Olympic OffRoad Boa and Cobra front and rear bumpers
Cobra 29LTD CB w/ 96in whip, and PA system
Superwinch EPi 6.0
TeraFlex sway-bar disconnects
Fully bed liner coated interior
Smittybilt G.E.A.R. seat covers
Hope to hear from some of you!
my email is caroperphotography@mac.com
and my youtube page with many of my Jeep and off roading adventure videos of myself and my friends on our excursions is at:

Happy Jeeping and Happy Caching!

firefighterjake 08-20-2009, 02:57 PM Aw man . . . you just missed the ORCA Tread Lightly Event . . . you would have been the hit of the Event . . . well other than Hiram's cooking, Gail's birthday, the meteor shower, the kayaking . . . well you get the idea. Make sure you come next year!
Mainiac1957 08-20-2009, 04:16 PM I also have an 08 not so modified JK Unlimited. Love it though.. We do live a ways apart unfortunately. I need to get down you way and check out all those new caches you are putting out. I do recommend the Yorktown series near China. Not too extreme, but a fun series. See you some time. Come up to Bangor on Sept 12 for my event. You can meet a bunch of cachers there.
dubord207 08-20-2009, 04:37 PM Wow! I'm going with you! I have a Z71 Silverado with tow hooks in the front and back that you can hook your winch to, plus when I'm off-road I have more courage then brains!:) Brad's Jeep is rather well equipped as well, can haul 20 pizzas and enough soda for a platoon with no problems. Is it yellow or orange Brad?;)
Mainiac1957 08-20-2009, 04:44 PM It's still yellow underneath the Tread Lightly mud from last weekend.:cool::p
Hiram357 08-20-2009, 05:26 PM ahhh yes, the good ol jeep vs truck argument. having owned jeeps and having owned trucks. I can honestly say they each have their place, but since I currently own a truck I'm batting for that team....
so I've got plenty of tow straps leftover from my jeep that we can do some bumper to bumper jeep drags with....:rolleyes::p
and back to the topic...
Welcome to the forums, if you're ever up this way there's quite a few nice places to 4x4. And yes the yorktown series is worth the drive, it's not too rough, but it's off road and there's lots of cool spots and some history to go along with it.
You just missed the last tread lightly event, but no worries, next years event is already in the planning stages. :D:D:D
squirrelcache 08-20-2009, 06:30 PM I have a truck w/off-road tires...and a 60" Hi-lift jack. Being 7k lbs., I don't take it too far off solid ground ;) It sure is handy for doing things like the SMR and riding up North...esp. w/a cap on it for overnights.
I'm Very sorry I missed yet another ORCA event! Couldn't find anyone that wanted to ride along.

aww cmon, the most memorable predicatments i've ever found myself in have been when i've been in the middle of nowhere by myself, those are times you don't forget. :D
and that's one to grow on... ;)

Come anyways . . . you can always find someone at camp that will ride along with ya for the ride.

And where do SUVs fit into the picture . . . I mean real SUVs with skid plates, tow points and real ground clearance . . . not yuppie mobiles for hauling around groceries and soccer kids? ;):D
On a serious note . . . it's good to hear from you . . . I was a bit worried to not see you here or on Facebook.
pm28570 08-21-2009, 08:07 AM As mentioned in a previous post, when I bought my 2nd CJ 5, I remembered why I sold the 1st CJ 5 :D. Having said that and having ridden in Brad's Killer Bee Jeep, the is no comparison to the Jeeps of the 60's & 70's. I understand they have heat in them now......:D:D
Sticking with my P/U.

pm28570 08-21-2009, 08:08 AM Next to the winch, this has to be the most important thing to have with you. It's gotten me out of a jam or 2.
...and a 60" Hi-lift jack.

Well, I'd say given the size of your 4runner it would fit into the truck category, and it has proven itself on more than one ocassion :D

Oh you mean like my Honda CR-V? :D
CARoperPhotography 08-23-2009, 11:13 AM Thanks for all the postings! I had an 08 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited but I flooded it last summer.... ha ha. I wasn't into caching at that time. The 2door in my opinion may not have as much room as my old 4 door but it is more off road capable. I am actually taking it out in a bit to place some caches. I did some research on a trail I know around here, and had to find out if it was owned by the Rachel Carson Fish and Wildlife Dept from the Feds. The have signs on the trail on the SIDES of the trail but after researching it and looking at their own maps, the trail is not their property. Their property runs the length of the trail but they do not know own it. It helps to know how to read a map!
CARoperPhotography 08-23-2009, 11:14 AM by the way, check out my Jeep and off road vides on youtube

squirrelcache 08-23-2009, 05:13 PM Thanks for posting the link Chadd. I used to be a VW desert rail kinda guy, and my son missed out on that part of my life. So now we dream build, anticipating the day we'll own a rubicon. We're loving the videos.

Sheesh, Jake! I just noticed your comment in the latter part of the thread...
Seems to me I hauled you around in my "yuppie mobile" Explorer one time - and you didn't have any complaints at all! LOL!

I was too scared with all of the high speed driving on the dirt roads to say anything. ;):D Besides, I would never think of you as a soccer mom. ;):D

I have always had a love/hate relationship with my old Jeep Wrangler that I had before I bought the 4Runner . . .
I loved it on hot summer days with the top down . . . but hated it when it was in middle of the winter, the heat was barely adequate to defrost the windows much less keep warm.
I loved going down the dirt roads in 4WD . . . but hated the fact that the short wheel base made keeping it in 4WD pretty much a necessity during the winter.
I loved being a Jeep owner with the Jeep wave . . . but hated the fact that it was in the garage so much for broken things . . . things like blown engines and dead windshield wiper motors (something I have never heard anyone having a problem with in any other make of vehicle.)
I loved being able to take the doors off and running around with nothing on but my bikini (the Jeep's bikini that is) . . . but hated the fact that there was no room to store stuff securely . . . heck, no room to store stuff period . . . heck, not much room for passengers.
Honestly, on hot summer days I think it would be fun to own one of the old CJs . . . but then I realize just how functional my 4Runner is on a daily basis.
Katadin Goddess 08-28-2009, 05:31 PM spectacle pond past augusta has some great jeep roads, not too harsh at all. a woosy could make those easily. minot has a few good jeep trails. bit rocky though, so better have high clearance. would like to put a cache out at castle ledge actually. any jeepers want to come with me? it was the last place i went with my son ryan. i have one cache in that system already, not minot trolls, the other one. black cat mtn in n. raymond has some good jeep trails too, again rocks are an issue. dam rocks. i finally got a winch so can go most anywhere, plus i have the highlift jack & chains.

As the goddess says the road to Spectical Pond is great for 4-wheeling and has a great water hazzard too!!! While in the area try my Goldfinger cache on the Ingraham Mountain road, That too has some great mud/water holes to go through!
