View Full Version : *warning* do not release or move coins to the bangor area
EvilHomer 08-21-2009, 10:19 AM I have been to three caches in the last two days that are supposed to have coins and they are ALL MISSING. I implore you all DO NOT PUT COINS IN CACHES IN THE BANGOR AREA. This thief needs to be caught, and until then I would NOT place coins around here.
Ekidokai 08-21-2009, 11:20 AM Which caches have you checked?
We know about the one in Brown Woods.
The one at Cole's Museum was taken a while ago and the old coins and bugs have not be listed as missing yet even after inquiring about it.
Haffy 08-21-2009, 02:21 PM Maybe someone ought to set up a "sting" operation and catch the thief.

For my 10th birthday, my Dad bought me a bolt-action, 20 gauge shotgun. Somewhere around that time he also gave me a small reloading set. Obviously I didn't have a lot of money in those days, so I cut corners by reloading with anything I could find, including rock salt, rocks, acorns, etc.
I still have the reloading set and plenty of rock salt, so if anyone needs a couple of shells...:eek:
masterson of the universe 08-22-2009, 08:27 PM Upon seeing this, I'm glad that my somewhat rare Leatherman Coin moved to Augusta in the past week. Hopefully it will be safe and stay in circulation.

RENAMED: SWEET CACHE JUSTICE baby!
Team V3 08-26-2009, 09:44 PM I have two TBs I am worrying about. Well worrying is a strong word. One was picked up in April and never dropped. The other in June I think. I have tried to message the people and one of them has not even logged on to the site in a while.

Opalsns 08-27-2009, 09:43 AM I hope this is appropriate for this thread.
If not , I'm sorry and TPTB can delete it.
I just found this curious, especially the answers to buyer questions.
And the (8) feedback with a negative and it's the only thing being sold????
I wrote him and told him he had better check at GC.Com to make sure he's not selling stolen coins.
Thought I'd Share

Hmmm.... The seller is VERY defensive for some reason.
Hiram357 08-27-2009, 10:34 AM Hmmm.... The seller is VERY defensive for some reason.
I don't think he understands that a coin being "activated" means that it is already owned and was released. Now wether that is the current owner that activated them I dunno... but it does seem suspcious that he won't share anymore information about the coins.....
Hiram357 08-27-2009, 10:43 AM another thought... I downloaded the pic and zoomed in as much as I can, all of the coins in the center appear to be pathtags... I wonder if the owners know those are being sold... The items to the left appear to just be wooden tokens, and only about 5 or 6 look like trackable coins...
benandtina 08-27-2009, 04:06 PM I am almost tempted to report the auction as containing potentially stolen property. The fact that he won't even give his friend's username is really fishy... and I find it hard to believe that he is getting bids 10x what he originally expected but is unwilling to go on gc.com and educate himself. You would think he would want to have all of the information sorted out so he can be sure to get the $100 people are willing to spend.

Don't waste your time. I noticed an ebay sale of a coin and asked for the tracking number. The seller gave it to me and after seeing that it was activated, explained it to them. His ebay id and caching id (yes, he was a geocacher) were close enough that I was able to see that he logged a cache, but didn't log the coin retrieve. I offered to pay for shipping, then to buy it, but he refused. I found the coin owner who also got involved, but neither ebay nor GC.com would do anything about it. The owner marked the coin page as stolen, but that was all she could do.

Wow!! 8 unique bidders!! Not only do I not believe how this seller came to be in possession of these coins I can't believe anyone would be willing to bid on them; they are essentially validating the taking of coins out of caches. (I'm operating under the pretense that only a geocacher would want geo-coins) I read the "sellers" claims that these coins aren't "stolen", if they are or not is irrelevent as it would not take long for a lowlife scumbag to deduce that a visit to all the caches with coins could mean easy money. It also wouldn't be a far stretch to say that the bidders of these coins would stoop low enough to steal activated coins out of their local caches. :(
I don't believe for a second the "owner" activated 8 of the coins and still would have them all in their possession and not have placed them in circulation, else why activate them. I could understand 1 or 2, maybe, but 8 comes across as "something's not right here." Also, if it is an ex-geocacher who just happened to want to get rid of his collection then I would think that person knew other geocachers and would offer them the first choice at the coins and pathtags.
Too bad this happens but it is not surprising.

I have nearly 70 coins and mine are all activated. That is the only way I know of for people to be able to discover them. I bring them to events just for that reason.

dubord207 08-28-2009, 05:55 AM I have a fairly good collection going, maybe 100 coins or so and haven't activated a single coin. I guess my thought is that if I ever decide to sell some of them they would be more valuable unactivated. Am I right about that? I don't do e-bay, just getting them from the various outlets plus 5 each month from the Coin Club.
I hope that most don't find the collection of coins presumptive of theft.
For those that collect, have you found 3 hole coin holders that actually keep the coins in place? If so, where can I get some. I bought some at a coin shop but the coins are always falling out.
squirrelcache 08-28-2009, 10:34 AM I've bought coins from ebay. I always make sure to get it in writing that the coin is not activated and an activation code will be provided. Atleast then it's a form of contract that's reliable. We have and like the type of coin book w/solid pages and a sliding window!? I would think if you were going to sell/gift any of your coins.....you'd have to keep track of the activation code or atleast where to get it for each and ever coin. That sounds like an organizational nightmare...esp. if you end up w/anywhere near as many as Barry ;)
Katadin Goddess 08-28-2009, 05:09 PM i have a few coins i would sell cheep to local cachers only. send me a private message, and they are not activated.

Sheesh! I have no idea where "Greene, Maine" is. Am I a local cacher?
:confused::confused:
dubord207 08-28-2009, 08:11 PM Not too tricky. 201 South to 202 west. Stop when you hit Greene about 12 miles before lewiston. That's certainly local. A warning though..there's no cold beer anywhere in Greene that I know about! Stock up in Leeds!:)

So, where is this collection kept? Do you have dogs?
Just doing, a, um, survey.

We have two dogs, Nick and Bo. They are Black Labs and eat raw meat every day. We haven't had any mail delivery here for about 3 years. Seems the last 2 letter carriers turned up "missing." Bo laughs when we ask what happened to Pete the Postal guy.
Nick could care less about geocoins. He's into beer, and beer only. If you come to my house and you've drank any beer in the last month, then you're toast! If you don't drink beer but drove my a store that sells it on your way here....well he'll know and you might loose an arm or at least sustain bad leg bites!
Oh, and I have a lot of guns, most never fired at coin thiefs. The National Guard has our home on the "do not raid" list because of the dogs and the guns.
Call first!!!:)

Where is your cannon Steve?!
Which one. Got the two pounder in my safe and I got a 68 cal replica sitting on a shell downstairs. lol I'm very much into blackpowder. I've got several b-p rifle and revolvers and a couple scatterguns too.
dubord207 10-24-2009, 06:20 AM I have a Coehorn Mortor. If I fill a Budweiser Select can with concrete, it will send the can over a mile! This cannon is an original confederate cannon, has a name "Tommy Boy." All those cannons have names. Lots of fun and end of the world loud. I broke two windows at the house here once!:)
shuman road searchers 10-24-2009, 06:31 AM That explains the "earthquake" we had a couple of years ago!

That is awesome! The only antiques I have is a few friends and my parents. :D
I used to melt down old lead pipe to shoot but the concrete would be cheaper. That and finding lead pipe is less common than hens teeth. The sprue that came off the "2 pounder" was almost big enough to load into a .45 cal smooth bore.

squirrelcache 10-24-2009, 10:53 AM We all make mistakes.......for sure. And in good fun.....it's generally accepted in most groups that we all poke fun at it...in good light! It should never be done in a manner that's embarassing to the person. Then again the person that made the mistake has to learn to accept it in good light as well. ;) This often works best in a close group, like that of 'family' or close friends.
Opalsns 10-24-2009, 12:55 PM What do you mean???
I honestly don't understand what youy are saying to me.
squirrelcache 10-24-2009, 01:09 PM His comment about "within range of your livingroom window" wasn't made personal and quite acceptable in most social circles. He didn't make it personal w/a name...or bring the issue back to the forefront in a negative way w/a link to the posts. Had he, then you may not have gotten a chance to comment before someone else gave him a friendly reminder to be nice.
Just because someone pokes light hearted fun at a previous mistake......doesn't mean you need to lay claim to it. ;) Did he drag it all up again.....nope...... you did a great job of that yourself. Take a deep breath and cache on....well when the rain lets up!

I want to apologize for not catching the Whole comment earlier. It wouldn't be fair if I didn't comment on the uncalled for comment that brought it about. The comment would have been better had it not mentioned a fictitious arsenal.
I don't feel it's appropriate that we push buttons and expect others to act appropriately, when we can't do the same. The kettle shouldn't call the pot black. Bad blood is bad most of the time because of stupid reasons.
Q.T.I.P!!
dubord207 10-24-2009, 02:55 PM Hope I didn't inadvertantly get something started. I'm a collector and I do have a cache about 60 feet from the chair I'm reclined in at this moment. Cannons are very cool. I went to a pirate party once, touched it off and the concussion blew out the propane burners on 2 different grills! I have a full scale confederate Howitzer as well, getting the barrel re-lined but that one will be a blast to shoot. If you take me candle pin bowling, check me before I leave the building as those balls would be perfect for that big boy!:)
Ekidokai 10-24-2009, 03:02 PM Ever park it in side the front door with a rocket igniter in the fuse hole with a little powder in there. Ask someone to come over.
It's funny as hell if you can get them to stop crying.
squirrelcache 10-24-2009, 03:14 PM Yikes.......reminds me of a TV segment I saw about bizarre pranks the Japanese were doing to wake each other. This guy awoke to a cannon going off at his door. I'd be afraid of causing someone a heart attack and being responsible for their demise... intended or not!
