View Full Version : Anyone Have a Netbook?

At the Beer & Wings event Saturday, I had a good discussion with Okidookie about the netbook computer he had. I've been thinking about getting a netbook for some time (it will be a lot easier to use in the car when we're traveling than my 17" screen Dell! LOL!), but I haven't seen one I liked. I'd like something better than the 1.6GB Intel Atom processor.

Anyone have a "better" netbook computer that they'd recommend?

Thanks.

It wouldn't be netbook then :)

Seems to me they are mostly equipped with the Atom processor.

I bought an ASUS about a month ago. What I saw was that they all have the same 1.6GB Intel Atom processor. I bought the 8.2 inch screen model and so far I enjoy it greatly. I loaded GSAK,topo and mapsource on it and always bring it when caching.Plenty of speed and I can grab internet if need be. I shut down the camera and bluetooth options to help stretch out the battery life. I am getting about 7 hrs on a charge. I did by the car adapter so I just leave it plugged in when I am out caching.

I have an Acer that I use, primarily to use on airplanes because of the size. It allows me to work even when the person in front puts the seatback down .
I also use it for my iPod and for caching in the truck. I bought the better battery and can get up to 7 hours. I don't know which processor it is, the labels are in Chinese.....I bought it in Hong Kong.
All that said, I like it for what I use it for. My biggest complaint would be the size of the keyboard. Sounds like for the reason you want to use a smaller "netbook", it would fit the bill.

I got the Dell netbook. A little bit bigger screen and keyboard. Works great!

I have an Acer netbook similar to ekidokaisiesis, and I love it. For browsing the web, gsak, and other simple things it's great. I don't plan to use it for games or anything like that.

I bought the 12" Dell...have M.S. Office and mapping programs on it. The smaller keyboards wouldn't have worked for me. The learning curve on the 12" wasn't bad. It's also my primary computer...not just for geocaching.

I have an Acer too (less than$350) - got it for the trip in June. Got the bigger screen and the larger battery - lasts for over 7 hours. My fingers are small so no problem with the keyboard. Run GSAk, have Mapsource and all that stuff. It will synch through a network to load stuff.......and I also have an external HD which I can use.

Black Friday - check out the web pages - supposedly Walmart has some "real" compueters in the small sizes (not netbook) on sale. Just a thought.

Biggest issue - Granddaughter likes movies - can't play them. BUT - I can access the websites where she can get her "shows".

Thank you cano. Needed another item (my laptop for me - the netbook for Amara at home - when I am not on the road) for the kid to use. She is into the Nickjr website right now which works fine. But later - we will explore. Thanks again.

Thanks for the comments!

I've been looking, but i haven't seen anything I like. Where are the new computers with the Intel Atom Z and 300-series chips? And Windows 7 is VERY hard to find. Why do so few computers have 2Gb memory?

If you look at a website like TigerDirect (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=4949), they have dozens of netbooks - but none with the combination I want.

Sheesh! LOL!

Seems I read somewhere that the Netbooks are limited in the memory and OS areas due to licensing agreements. I think most of the netbooks I have seen are running XP and come in with about 1G of memory. You will probably be hard pressed to find configurations different from the standard issue.

Sheesh! I've seen netbooks with Windows 7, but they all only have 1 GB of memory. And I've seen netbooks with 2 GB of memory, but they're all Windows XP. And afetr going to some the manufacturers websites, I'd have to agree - apart from the standard configurations, they don't give you many options for "custom-built" rigs.

I just may bite-the-bullet (where have I heard that before?) and get a cheap, generic model. :D:D

Buy winXP version, it's a win-win situation :) Besides you can probably add more memory if you need.

I have the asus 10" and I love it. Right off the bat I upgraded memory to 2GB and I bought an external dvd reader/burner. I was able to load my topo8 and lots of other programs I use with it. Ive had it for over a year and bring it campin/geocaching when ever we go out. The battery life is pretty low so bought a car adapter charger. Works for me. Oh yeah the asus that I bought has a pretty good size keyboard on it. Some that I looked at were really tiny keys. I guess I have fat fingers.

Before you decide go to Computers R Us or Computers ECT. or something like that. They will put together what you want and it will not cost that much more.

Just wish I could remember the name. It's on the Mall road in Bangor up near Hogan road. Right next to where Mail boxes ect. use to be.

I know that's terrible but it's the best I can do right now.

Computer Renaissance? Hmmm.... Sounds like it might be a good idea. I've thought about getting a 1GB model, and just replacing the 1GB memory chip with a 2GB chip, but memory is a terrible thing to waste...

I've been searching, and I do like this model (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12523011#ProductDetail).

They are a fine rig. As I told WhereRwe? The only thing I don't like is the screen is too small. I have bad sight and have to wear the most powerful readers they make to read most of the time. But small, powerful and cheap is what I wanted and that is what it is.

Not sure which one you got WhereRWe - but I like mine. Anyway - I bought a Zagg Invisible Shield kit for my D150 but can't figure out how to apply it. Decided it's not worth messing with.

Anyone want it for 1/2 price? $15! (for pick up - or shipping would be extra) Here is the link to read about it. http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/acer-aspireone-d150-cases-covers-skins-shields.php

Also have one for a Casio Boulder Phone with Front Speaker - http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/casio-gzone-boulder-with-front-speaker-cases-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php That one goes for $12.00

I love the internet for researching products. Independent tests like we've had in magazines for years can be helpful. The reliability and customer service reports by online users can be priceless. It's great when you have repair shops locally that will give you the low down on the long term wisdom of some purchases.

I'm not sure if it's Mike I'm thinking of....I'd have to check w/someone. The family has owned many gateway LTs over the years.....most of them bought cheaply from e-bay because they couldn't be repaired. They were salvaged for a particular purpose, like large screen picture framed slideshow machines.

WOOT used to sell one item per day (starting at midnight) - when the item was gone, that was it, but you could see what it was. Now, they have continuing sales. When one items sells out, they put up another one.

I learned that the other day when I bought the netbook. Checking WOOT is one of the first things I do every morning when I log onto the computer, and I wouldn't check it again because I thought that was the item "for the day". I was surprised when Team Horwich posted the link to the Gateway Netbook a few hours later. I'll have to check WOOT more often. LOL!

Thats because today is a Woot Off. Woot.com sells only one item every day. When the item is gone, they don't update until the following day. Every once and while, they have a lot of miscellaneous left over items and they have a Woot Off (indicated by the flashing lights) and they sell those items until they run out. As soon as they run out of that item, they update the site to something new. Woot Off's are great. It could be two minutes or 2 hours between new items. I'm sure that Acer didn't last long at that price. If you utilize Twitter, you can follow Woot or Woot Off and get updates to your phone as soon as the item changes.

2 other great sites to check out are Steep and Cheap and Whiskey Militia. They both are daily sites and you can download a snipit so you can get up to the second notices of the items they have for sale at that time. You have to act quickly too as I have found out on many occasions. Both sites items are at least 50% off.

Cano - I have an Acer - so does Hiram......I like mine but you are asking questions beyond me. I got the one with the bigger screen and the larger battery (it runs for a long time without power). Bought it on line through Amazon. The USB ports work but I don't know what you mean by 500mA. Not booting up from an SD card - ah, not sure what you mean but the SD card with my photos works fine.....and the wifi works. You had my unit in your lap at the Tread Lightly event. I like mine - for travel and in the car it is perfect. It travels well and with the case which clamshells open - no taking it out of the case for security screening at the airport - which is very nice.

As I said in an earlier post, I have this one. Like you, my primary focus was for size and the ability to work while on an airplane. That said, it does everything I need it to do like any other PC. I do use several external drives that have no problem with the power levels provided by the USB ports. If it's Windows OS, why wouldn't it boot from an external source utililizing DOS? I cannot answer your question other than to say, I've had no problems. Again....only drawback is keyboard size. My advice.....get the better battery for extended use, it is well worth it. And.....a bonus for you.....you have the background and knowledge to "tweak" this thing to have it perform as you wish. What else could you want? :)
Oh, and it's red. That seals the deal!

Sure, but netbook by definition is not meant to be your primary computer. So size, weight, long battery life is preferred over power or capacity. Google Chrome OS will run on netbooks without hard drive at all. For everything else I have powerful desktop computer with 6TB of storage and it's getting full :)

Actually, it would be $120 and they are available online. No wait needed! What are the differences? I thought they looked pretty similar.

The Netbook arrived yesterday, and I've been setting it up the way I want it. Seems like a great computer!

I also installed Delorme's Street Atlas this afternoon, and RULost2? and I drove around for a while with the GPSr connected to see how we liked it. BONZER!!

Sheesh, Mate! I thought you were erudite! LOL! It means good, great, etc.

From Wikipedia:

Bonzer (also spelled as Bonza[1]) is an Australian slang term. It is an expression of approval or one used as a generally positive reaction.

Mine will arrive tomorrow, can't wait :)
I finally found use for my 16MB SD card, that came with my camera, but I can't find it :) I will put a GRUB boot loader on it to boot up my emergency tools. Great thing about GRUB is it can emulate CD ROM from an ISO file. So you just save your ISO file on your hard disk and then you can boot from this ISO to install a new OS or diagnostics tools, without need for an actual CD ROM, sweet :)

I went out yesterday and got a 16mb thumb drive so I could install Delorme's Street Atlas. I just copied the CD to the thumb drive, and the installation went smooth as can be. :D:D

You mean 16GB? :P
You could have just shared your CD drive on one computer and access it on another. With Hamachi Virtual Private Network you can access your computer even if it is on the other side of the world.

I just got mine one day early. Now I have to uninstall all that crap it came installed with. Looks nice. I bought 6 cell battery and it's HUGE. I should have bought 3 cell, but 6 hours of battery life sounds nice :)

Yeah - that took a while with mine. Symantec was especially nasty - I got a nag screen about every 15 minutes! LOL!

That's the best thing you can do with a new computer - get rid of the extra "trial copies" of software they stuff it with. :(:(

Speaking of crap what is the best way to uninstall all the crap that comes with the unit?

I do that manually. But you can use decrapifier.

I don't like my 6 cell battery. I don't really need that much battery power anyway. So if there is somebody who wants to upgrade his 3 cell to 6 cell or wants additional brand new 6 cell. I'm willing to exchange/sell it for yours. You will pay the difference. It's the acer aspire one D250 notebook battery.

Are all netbook batteries specific to that particular netbook or are they universal to all netbooks.

My primary reason for netbook was it's size and weight. 6 cell battery is bigger and heavier than I expected.

I've got the 6-cell battery in my netbook and I don't mind the weight at all. It's like the difference between 3 and 6 flashlight (D cell) batteries. Not a lot, as far as I'm concerned. :D:D

Same here. I'll take 7 hours of battery life any day over a few grams or ounces.

I love the larger battery - no worries about using the inverter on the road. Or having low power on a long flight.

I swapped the battery with ekidokay. I like the 3 cell much more, we will see how he likes his. It doesn't happen so often to see someone wants to downgrade :)

I don't use this very much. It is still running after 6 hours so it has doubled the run time so far. The longest I have used the battery is while doing laundry. I used about half the life.

I think it will work out fine.

I remember when someone contacted me because they had found one of my TBs in a washing machine or a dryer at a laundramat. You just never know.
