View Full Version : New Caches in Bangor areas
EvilHomer 03-09-2010, 03:33 PM I have noticed a few new caches being put out by a new cacher, which is great. However, the choice of locations is not very good in my opinion. One is right behind the Bangor homeless shelter and some further up on 1st street and 2nd street. Please do not read into this as I am being biased, but there are some very, how should I put it, SHADY, goings on in and around these areas. I would even say it could be a borderline dangerous area. When one of the logs for one new cache states that the cacher could see kids playing in one corner of the park, and some people having SEX in the other, that tends to raise some red flags that this is NOT a good area for caches. Does anyone else agree with me or am I just being an idiot? If the new cacher is in here I would welcome them to comment and discuss this. I am just thinking of those of us who cache with kids.
Ekidokai 03-09-2010, 03:42 PM Yeah, just got back from looking for a few and those areas are ruff.
fins2right 03-09-2010, 04:23 PM That must be the park cache I found this weekend. Yeah, they are a little rough. There were/are a few caches placed around the south end of Waterville that also fall into that catagory. I don't think the park cache poses a danger to anyone involved. My guess is that muggles will probably take care of the issue. I always appreciate the effort in placing new caches though. Kudo's to the City of Bangor in fixing up the playground equipment in the park.
Hey there Evil, It's nice to see you come out of hibernation!! :D:D
EvilHomer 03-09-2010, 04:42 PM Yes I had a LOOONG winters nap. No snow for snowmobiling has left me a little ugly though. Good thing is now CACHING time again.
brdad 03-09-2010, 04:58 PM Every time I speak up against these caches I get the "Everyone takes their own risk when finding a cache, let anyone hide them anywhere" speech.
Funny part is, a while back I stood up for a cache placed in a park where some less desirable relationship activities as well as who knows what else were taking place, suggesting that these activities should be brought to the attention of the city until a resolution was made. Take back the control of these areas or the undesirables win!
So the best option I can think of in these cases is just to clearly state in your log what your experience was like and hopefully other cachers will use that as a tool to help determine if they want to do the cache.
Regardless, I think these caches are often not great for caching. If these types of caches were my first, I probably would not have had a lot of interest in looking for more...
JustKev 03-09-2010, 05:17 PM Who reads logs before they go? If we'd been doing that we would have realized the error in trying to find caches still buried in several feet of snow. :)
brdad 03-09-2010, 05:32 PM I used to never read them.
Then I progressed to reading them when we were on caching trips out of state.
Then I progressed to reading them when we were caching out of town.
Now I read a lot of them, to get a short list of caches I definitely want to do even when they are nearby. To just randomly go out and find any cache is not my style most days.
pm28570 03-09-2010, 06:28 PM In the style I choose to cache, I do read the recent logs at a minimum. While I like the concept of the recent hides, some of them are not desirable, just from a muggle stand point, let alone other factors. Within a day, one went missing from Davenport, for reasons we can only speculate. I think the others will have the same trouble.
Again, I like the concept of these....perhaps there is some middle ground of sorts for them to be successful.
drwhogrl 03-09-2010, 10:09 PM After doing a few of those caches I do have to agree the locations are kinda sketchy and I am not sure how long they will last in those locations. Its unfortunate that these areas are not the most highly desirable areas for caches or even places to hang out at.
masterson of the universe 03-09-2010, 10:50 PM When I relocated to Bangor back in 2002, we had trouble finding a decent apartment and ended up at 50 Cedar street. Sitting in the living room we could see down the hill and the shelter was in plain view. Out the other window, First Street. I can definitely attest to the fact that the riff raff come out in full force all night long in the areas where Davenport and 2nd street caches or located. I learned quickly after having vehicles broken into, and the neighbors beating the snot out of each other that you just plain don't go into parks nor unfamiliar areas like this at night, no matter who you're with, especially during the warm summer nights. There were several nights where we'd see the fights happen and minutes later, the police scanner would go off and the cops were taking care of business. Doing these caches during the day shouldn't be much of an issue but I wouldn't recommend them in the dusk to dark hours if you are alone, especially carrying expensive little gadgets.
Moonsouth 03-09-2010, 10:53 PM I always love an opportunity to throw in the, more reason to cache armed : )
brdad 03-09-2010, 11:24 PM I always love an opportunity to throw in the, more reason to cache armed : )
Reminds me of the Archie Bunker clip (search youtube for Archie Bunker on Gun Control) where his answer to hijack problems on airlines if to arm every passenger when they board the plane. Certainly not the worst idea!
Ekidokai 03-10-2010, 02:38 AM Oh great now you tell me Cory.
firefighterjake 03-10-2010, 09:30 AM I don't worry too much . . . then again I'm more of a day light cacher myself and the funny thing about riff raff is they tend to scurry like cochroaches in the light of day.
My own take . . . if I'm doing something legal and it's a public place I'll wade right into the fray and if someone is getting "busy" or up to no good . . . well no problem . . . they probably should have taken it indoors and got a room . . . probably my Irish pugnaciousness coming out I suppose.

By the way....nice to see the delegate from Bradley once again! :D

cachecrashers4 03-10-2010, 09:28 PM pugnaciousness - now there's a word you don't see everyday!

The only problem is in days past that would have simply scared them off, however these days it might get you beat, stabbed, or even shot. Hell you might even get a hypodermic needle in the leg or foot. I just don't feel safe in these areas anymore. Bangor was not like this years ago. Times are changing and not for the better. Anywhere else around the Greater Bangor area and I wouldn't have any issue, but this particular area of Bangor is pretty much the worst you could find. The activities are probably mostly contained to the night, but that will change too. There is a Methodist Church on Union St just up from the Greyhound Station, this is very near the same area we are discussing, and while driving by there in the middle of the day I saw two people on the steps of this church pretty close to pants on the ground if you know what I mean. In the middle of the day on church steps.......? This is the element that is hanging around that area.

Bad muggles.

I think they will be muggled soon, I went by a few of them yesterday but there were always to many people...shady characters. It will take just one person to go and get the cache anyways while they are there, then you will see a list of DNF's then hopefully an archive...I mean who gets pleasure making these finds??......YAY I Found the Bangor Ghetto woo hoo, now I know where to find whores and crack!
masterson of the universe 03-11-2010, 09:34 AM Had to post a pic on my log for Coe Park as its an example of how some of the nasty Bangor parks are used. Someone was going through one of the trash cans looking for treasures of a different kind. I understand that this is a lively hood for these folks because they have to be able to afford their Boones Farm and Lucky Strikes but the guy was taking the trash out of the can and throwing it on the ground to get it out of the way and didn't put it back once he had found all the bottles and cans he could see. When you think about it, I guess when the whole world is your home you can make whatever mess of it you want and just move on to another location the next day.
At least there are still some nice parks like on Broadway that you can take your kids to and not have to answer to "Daddy, why are those men peeing down the slide?"
benandtina 03-11-2010, 10:11 AM I'm amazed. We don't really go in that direction very often but we eat downtown all the time and I never would have guessed what was just a couple blocks away! Before moving to Maine we lived in Orlando and it was pretty obvious where the red light district began. You could spot the corners to avoid because of drugs or other sketchy activities from a mile away. Either I've become much less observant or the people in Orlando are way more obvious. It's unfortunate that these should have to be concerns :(

Another reason why I like the Stud Mill Road...

Is there any heat map of Bangor that will display number of police calls to certain areas?
Mainiac1957 03-11-2010, 05:01 PM I made my finds on these new park caches between 6-7 am. Not many stirring at that time of morning other than an occasional dog walker.
Ekidokai 03-11-2010, 09:15 PM I'll get the rest tonight. I didn't see anything too dangerous out there. We will see what I run into tonight. listen to your scanners and have bail money ready.
hollora 03-11-2010, 10:41 PM Scanner is talking about fire tonight - don't set any!

I've found the early day-light hours works well . . . most of the bad guys are asleep . . . and the bums have moved on to their daylight haunts.
So far I've been to all of the park caches between 6:30 and 8 a.m. and have encountered no one . . . other than a person walking their dog.

Hey listen, after a hard day of drinking, collecting bottles and scamming money from the government, you have to sleep in until 10 or so. Sorry, Cynical cop humor. :D:D:rolleyes:

I didn't think it was legal to say "cop" and "humor" in the same sentence.
Like the Brewer officer who was in line behind me at a Subway a few years back. No display of humor at all when I told him I thought LEO's only ate at Dunkin Donuts.

Maybe they were getting a discount there . . . I know that a Subway here for example in Bangor gives a discount to folks in uniform on occasion . . . or so I've been told.:D

I have used those four years.
Maybe if enough people like me see these areas that need clean up we can set up an event like the CITO event in Brewer.
pm28570 03-13-2010, 09:36 PM Thinking early morning would be best to grab some of these QCP caches, I headed out early. Got to 2nd Street cache and decided to access from behind Shaws. Pulled in and noticed one vehicle there already, turns out to be a taxi with the driver out relieving himself. :(
He didn't seem to concerned, finished and left.

I'd have pulled out my cell and called the cab company and reported him. There are places open all night that he could have used. Living in the country is one thing, but in the city. Nah, he shouldn't be employed by the cab company.

Can't disagree with that. And.....there were available facilities within a stone's throw.
You know, I really don't like being negative about these caches. It's nice to have a little series like this with larger containers in an urban setting.

Members of a group (military, in this case) can always joke amongst themselves without recourse (like African-Americans routinely using "The N Word"). But never, ever make jokes about another group. :D:D

avemery 03-23-2010, 09:11 PM Evilhomer, glad to see you read my log! I was wondering what others thought of these. I don't get on here often as I usually cache from the phone. I see that one of them is having a hard go of it as I have been there three times and its been muggled everytime. Has anyone contacted them and give them a heads up on the hoods in the city???
hollora 03-23-2010, 11:02 PM I had a long post written and lost it - Evilhomer has some good points - and I need to read avemery's log. Second street park is well known for it's drug activity and dealings.............and the list goes on. Bangor Parks in town are not prestine places and not places where I would go cache hunting with my Granddaughter. For some, these places might be fine - but then again, let the hunter beware.
dubord207 03-24-2010, 07:14 AM Di and I completed our trip Saturday. Had a great time but unfortunately I got off the ship with strep throat, something that was apparently "going around" on that cruise. I'm not over it yet and will stay home again today after a hard night last night.
But bring on the lawyer jokes! You shouldn't be surprised that I've heard most of them.
I'll get out and replace the missing Yorktown cache soon. I've disabled Apple a Day for the time being. Hard to imagine that the cache was muggled but there's no other possible explaination as those of you that have found it will understand.

On a serious note, welcome back buddy . . . hope your trip went well.
JustKev 03-24-2010, 08:28 AM Glad you're back to fix that on Yorktown. JustPJ66 and I grabbed our 100th on that series but her knee was bothering after having done the Spectacle Pond Series so we stopped at #3. Next time we try it we'll have my truck instead of her van or we might even load the ATV in the truck just for the Yorktown series so she can get them all with me.
EMSDanel 03-24-2010, 03:28 PM So Mr. Dubord.....you got off the ship with strep throat? Everyone knows you should never board a ship that has strep throat, always pick a healthy one. But it occurs to me: that cruise line must have been reckless and negligent, causing egregious harm to you and other passengers. Unlimited pain and agony, loss of wages, and loss of consortium! Willful and wanton derelict of duty on thier part! What would any other reasonable and prudent cruise line do? How many other passengers suffered this same horrific outcome? I see a class-action suit here......=the international sign for strep throat.
dubord207 03-24-2010, 04:39 PM I've sent Joe Bornstein south as my representative. He says that when he's done with Royal Caribbean, I'll own the damn ship! Problem is, he wants a third of the ship! The bow has the best bars but the engines are in the stern. I'm not certain this is going to work out......:D By the way, you left out loss of enjoyment of martini's which doesn't seem to go well with Tussinex. Loss of consortium, I'll let you know later tonite!
