JustPJ66 10-05-2010, 05:35 AM Our cache is one of the ones hit by this new maine bot...but this bot is currently hitting rhode island and mass caches too...wish groundspeak had a report abusive user button might hasten the process to get rid of them. 98XJSport 10-05-2010, 05:45 AM This bot hit a bunch of my watchlisted caches too. Anyone know of a way to report them? http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=fbd0115a-e5ba-4cd9-8b91-04e3ff1d6c8f JustPJ66 10-05-2010, 05:49 AM I believe my husband contacted maine publisher this morning about them. Mainiac1957 10-05-2010, 06:01 AM Yes the new one is Forest Defender. Was at over 3500 this morning. I deleted all the logs of my caches it found. About 20 so far. We all need to do the same. JustPJ66 10-05-2010, 06:03 AM already deleted the 2 logs on caches so far of ours that were hit JustPJ66 10-05-2010, 06:13 AM thought kev had emailed our maine publisher but apparently he didnt have time before leaving for work (i just talked to him) but i shot an email off now. JustPJ66 10-05-2010, 06:31 AM maine publishers reply :Forestdefenders account is now closed. JustPJ66 10-05-2010, 06:32 AM maine publishers reply :Forestdefenders account is now closed. Thank you MP:D tat 10-05-2010, 06:39 AM The following post NH Zamboni may be helpful: http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=260242&pid=4489233&mode=threaded&show=&st=&#entry4489233 I too, regret the burden this places on the affected cache owners. Thanks for reporting any suspicious activity. dubord207 10-05-2010, 06:48 AM I only had 5 and the logs have been deleted. Not a great way to start the day! ampmdp 10-05-2010, 07:28 AM I'm new to the "bot" thing. Just so we're clear...is my cache still there? JFamilySebec 10-05-2010, 07:38 AM yep, he got 9 of mine too. Will delete the logs asap- brdad 10-05-2010, 07:39 AM I'm new to the "bot" thing. Just so we're clear...is my cache still there? Your caches should be safe, they are not taking caches, just making bogus logs. cano 10-05-2010, 07:57 AM Yes the new one is Forest Defender. Was at over 3500 this morning. I deleted all the logs of my caches it found. About 20 so far. We all need to do the same. Actually no, we don't need to do the same. We pay groundspeak, it's their job. There is no point to manually delete 3500 logs when they can delete it with one SQL query. bigpapi122565 10-05-2010, 08:08 AM other than some boggus log enteries, does this pose any real threat? JustPJ66 10-05-2010, 08:15 AM depends on what the clickable link goes to or what it gives you ie: a virus.... NativeMainer 10-05-2010, 08:31 AM Actually no, we don't need to do the same. We pay groundspeak, it's their job. There is no point to manually delete 3500 logs when they can delete it with one SQL query. The idea is that they SHOULD be able to manually delete those bogus logs. However, I'm not risking someone else's computer system and I deleted the logs on the caches that I own. I'm just worried about some of the caches where the owner is no longer active, but the cache still is. Someone can easily trip over that log and mess up their compute system. NativeMainer 10-05-2010, 08:34 AM This could also be the reason why GC.com is shutting down at 2:00 PM our time for a site update. Just speculation on my part. pm28570 10-05-2010, 08:37 AM My view in life is that there is a positive in every negative. Yep, the bot got some of my caches and a whole lot of others in Maine. On the other hand.....I think it has the Delorme Challenge completed. :) brdad 10-05-2010, 08:41 AM My view in life is that there is a positive in every negative. Yep, the bot got some of my caches and a whole lot of others in Maine. On the other hand.....I think it has the Delorme Challenge completed. :) Too funny! kayaking loon 10-05-2010, 08:47 AM I was just going to ask about this "bot" whatever that is, I think it hit ten of mine. I'll delete the logs and am just glad I don't have to worry about the actual caches! cano 10-05-2010, 09:16 AM I was just going to ask about this "bot" whatever that is, I think it hit ten of mine. I'll delete the logs and am just glad I don't have to worry about the actual caches! in 2050 people will send robots to find the cache and/or mess with it. in 2070 robots will send robots to find the cache and/or mess with it. :) lexmano 10-05-2010, 09:24 AM Yes the new one is Forest Defender. Was at over 3500 this morning. I deleted all the logs of my caches it found. About 20 so far. We all need to do the same. Petr (geocaching handle Marcipanek) has burst on the scene in Southern Maine and has racked up huge numbers. Perhaps he is a bot?:D Mapachi 10-05-2010, 09:36 AM I was just going to ask about this "bot" whatever that is, I think it hit ten of mine. I'll delete the logs and am just glad I don't have to worry about the actual caches! If you go to their blog site it has thousands of pictures of caches they have found taken and destroyed!! So our caches may not be safe! I had five caches "attacked" but they are all in remote areas and I am unable to check on any of them soon.:eek::mad::mad: Ekidokai 10-05-2010, 12:44 PM Just by discussing this crap you have fallen into the trap set by this looser. To get the name out. Just another form of graffiti. CARoperPhotography 10-05-2010, 05:09 PM Petr (geocaching handle Marcipanek) has burst on the scene in Southern Maine and has racked up huge numbers. Perhaps he is a bot?:D Why do you think he's on our GeoRally team? ha ha 4ccnhikers 10-05-2010, 09:49 PM After the long drive, and the strenuous hike I made with the parmachenees to find the Borestone Mountain cache on Saturday, I'm sure this bozo didn't get to the actual cache, even though it's logged as a find! However, I am also concerned about someone clicking on the link. Should I send an E-mail to groleau about it? WhereRWe? 10-05-2010, 09:57 PM However, I am also concerned about someone clicking on the link. Should I send an E-mail to groleau about it? Virus protection is not the only issue; Some sites receive money from advertising based on traffic. So I had to buy this new computer today.... |
