Is there any way to display attributes on my PN-40? I have read that this was supposed to be something that was available in the 2.8 firmware update. I have 2.8 and I can't see anywhere to show attributes. I know that I can filter in my PQs or in GSAK but sometimes when I am out on the trail I would like to know if a cache is winter friendly or not (especially now).

Go to Geocaching .com to the Account settings page. At the very bottom on the left side it will say which version of GPX files you are getting. If it is 1.0 then you need to edit it to be 1.0.1 then it will send attributes along into GSAK. Whether this will help you get them on a PN-40 I don't know, but it is a place to start.

I set it to 1.0.1 when they first released it but I have not seen any changes on the PN-40 for attributes since the 2.8 firware release.

I looked at my PN-40 also and I do not see anywhere that the attributes are listed either. I also have the 2.8.520082 firmware in mine. Do you remember where you read this?

If you search on google for PN-40 attributes you will find it on the Delorme Forums and it is actually Chip Noble who mentioned it would be part of the 2.8 upgrade.

Have you emailed Chip and asked him about it?

That would be a good idea. What is his email address?

Thanks! I sent an email off this morning. Hopefully we will hear back soon. The blog entry that I referenced earlier is here: http://blog.delorme.com/category/pn-40-news/

It is near the bottom under the heading of "Firmware Updates".

Hello Fins Up, thanks for sending me an e-mail letting me know about the firmware discussion taking place here. I apologize for any confusion my blog post wording caused. It's always challenging for me to describe work we're doing in a way that translates correctly to the terms used on the geocaching.com site.

In my blog post I referenced support for attributes with the PN-40 firmware and by that I meant the Name, Cache ID, Type, Size, Difficulty, Terrain, Inventory, Short Description, Long Description, and Hint. I grouped them all into the term attribute because behind the scenes they are attributes of the geocache record.

I see how this was confusing because Geocaching.com only refers to part of the cache record as Attributes... is there parking available, is it kid friendly. I've updated the blog post to clarify what was meant.

We have had the extended attribute support of the 1.01 GPX file format update on our customer wish list, it's just a matter of scheduling the work in and around all the other projects going on right now.

Sorry for the confusion and thank you for pointing this out. Feel free to let us know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions on the Earthmate-series of GPS devices.

Thank you very much for the follow-up. It would be great to see this on make it on the next update. Having the attributes for a cache out in the field could be very helpful.

You are going to need the newest PN-40 firmware which, you will have to pay for if you don't have TOPO 9.0....

I picked it up when it came out. I wanted the ability to load multiple GPX files.

Should have moved to the 60 instead. The 40 takes weeks to load or save a GPX file ha ha

That is no lie. It takes forever saving or loading files. Is the 60 fast on those?
