I have written my letter to Camden State Park requesting the weekend of January 14th to 16th for the Cabin Fever Event. For those who are not familiar with this, it's a winter camping experience not to be forgotten. Watch the date carefully, there is a chance I may not get the weekend I requested. My second choice was the following weekend.

I believe you came in on Saturday. A couple of us skied back from the cabin and met you.

firefighterjake 12-31-2010, 07:41 PM I tried to make this last year . . . by sled . . . but broke down . . . the only time my beloved Skidoo left me stranded in the woods . . . newer sled this year . . . if there is snow I may try coming in by sled to say hi.

Yes, you are right - how could I forget that hike???!!! I would love to try and make it Friday this year. Thanks for reminding me.
Where can I buy a nice sled? Went to Dick's sporting goods, they don't have any I would like. they don't even have bungee cords, but they have a large selection of snow shoes ($130 - $150)
I got mine at Aubuchon http://outdoor-living.hardwarestore.com/57-328-snow-sports/expedition-sled-147520.aspx
Almost any cheap sled will work, but if you get a wider one, it might not tip over as easily. A smaller one will keep you from taking too much gear.

Yup TAT - right on!
That's the one I got (last year) and with some parachute type cord wound through the holes (I think I got that there - or at the Hardware store at the end of Exchange Street - used to be Bangor Hardward/believe not Aubuchon anyway), some bungies (if the sled people don't have any - try the hardware store near Blue Seal Feeds N Needs, or Blue Seal or Marden's) and a few knots in the rope (opps - maybe I got the rope at Ocean State Job Lot) - I was good to go. This year I am considering the blue (or other colored) tarp wrap of everything in the sled before bungying it down into the sled.
I have gone through my list of gear - ready and waiting to hear the "real date"..............

firefighterjake 01-03-2011, 09:10 AM I always liked Paris sleds . . . I think they might have even been made in Paris, Maine . . . but I could be wrong . . . for some reason they just seemed to slide better than some of the other sleds.

Last year I used one of our kids old plastic sleds, and it was fine. At first I thought it would be too small, but TAT's right; too big a sled makes you bring too much stuff! I agree with Hollora, too. Wrap it all in a tarp or plastic in the sled so stuff doesn't fall out. If I remember correctly, there was one runaway sled last year that took off into the woods a few times on the way back!;)
Kaching Karen 01-19-2011, 09:13 AM Don't forget that the Cabin Fever event is this Saturday. Some people will be showing up on Friday and staying on through to Sunday. It may be cold, but we know how to keep cozy in the cabin. Please feel free to drop in and say "Hi" dig into the grub, play a board game, and just enjoy good company. We'll hike to a couple of caches and it looks like snowshoes will be necessary.
It's going to be really cold. This is what we'll do
http://www.wimp.com/boilingwater/ for fun :)
Ekidokai 01-19-2011, 09:07 PM Wont be cold enough for that.
hollora 01-19-2011, 10:50 PM Will be thinking of everyone - hope all have a great time...........
Mainiac1957 01-20-2011, 07:28 PM I am planning to be heading in no later than 3:00. Hey it a winter camping event, right? I am glad that we have the woodstove and a roof over our heads. I hope folks still come in and enjoy the day.
attroll 01-20-2011, 11:53 PM I am planning on going but if it is snowing, I will not go. I don't want to deal with the driving conditions and the idiots on the road.

I'll only be on the road for a little while....OH wait, you mean the other idiots. Sure wish you had a way to stuff your snow sled in the truck.

Kaching Karen 01-23-2011, 08:21 PM We all had a grand time:
In attendance, Mainiac1957, tat, HikenFish (2), laroch, Kaching Karen, Cano, 4ccnhikers (Priscilla), Parmachenee (2), and Lacy. No one froze to death. That's for sure! Maniac was a superhero and got to the cabin early (through the storm) to get it ready for us. Laroch and HikenFish were the next to arrive. Lacy and I got to see a bright moon rise which was in such contrast of the storm the hour before. Last, but not least on Friday night, tat showed up at the door.
Saturday we had breakfast and we all took off for a "short" hike to find a cache. The hike was not short and we did not find the cache, but after three miles of tough snow shoeing we were happy to head back to the cabin to find more friends and food. Cano had arrived for the night, Parmachenee and 4ccnhikers had shown up for a day-visit. It was so much fun to see everyone.
Friday night we did some primitive fire lighting, played yatzee, relaxed and slept off our pot-luck supper and long hike. Sunday, after a great breakfast by Cano, we packed up. I wish we had more time together. I did ask if there was any interest in a new location for the event. I got a resounding "NO!" So, we'll see everyone again next year and hopefully more. Thanks to all for such a great time.
