If so, donate your unused computer processing power - called "distributed computing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_computing)" - to a project called "Rosetta@Home (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/)" that is searching for disease cures through the study of protein structure. The project is sponsored by the University of Washington using software developed by the University of California, Berkeley.

The program runs in the background on your computer when ever you are not using it's computing power. If you'd like to help, go to the sign-up page (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_intro.php), download the software and join Rosetta@Home.

I'd also like you to join the team I'm a part of - The Knights Who Say Ni (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/team_display.php?teamid=198)! Check me out! I'm known as "Roger the Shrubber (you have to know Monty Python...). Ive been a member for over 4 years now, and feel my contribution has been helpful.

Thanks!

Great topic!

Some other popular distributed computing projects are:
Folding@home http://folding.stanford.edu/
Genome@home http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/genome/
Evolution@home http://www.evolutionary-research.net/
MilkyWay@home http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/
Docking@home http://docking.cis.udel.edu/
Collatz Conjecture http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/index.php
Einstein@home http://www.einsteinathome.org/
SETI@home http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/

and many others http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_distributed_computing_projects

You can even run Folding@home on your Playstation 3 and contribute to science when you aren't gaming away.

I've never heard of programs like these until today, but I must say I think it's wonderful. There's absolutely no reason to waste that processing power if it can be used by someone for a greater good. I'm from Indiana and I can almost bet there are many offices (Indianapolis doctors (http://www.angieslist.com/companylist/indianapolis/doctor.htm), dentists, politicians etc) where computers stay on constantly that could help out. Keep up the good work on this excellent idea!

Seti@home is the most famous distributed computing application. It's been around since 1999. But I stumbled across Rosetta@home (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/) and liked it.

They will not get one red bit of computing power from me. I fight with this thing too much as it is and don't want anyone helping themselves to my stuff. NO WAY!!

If they want to talk to aliens I can set up a face to face anytime they want.
