A day of kayaking fun and camping.
Update: 16 July 2005
Some of us will be meeting at Wal-Mart in Augusta on the morning of the 20th at 7 am and then driving to the campground on Deer Isle. So those that want to meet us at Wal-Mart please let us know ahead of time so that we know who to look for and wait for.
Origanl post: 13 July 2005
This caching event will be for those of us that want to use our GPS skills on open water. We are not going to leave the site of land at any time. We have a spot reserved at Old Quarry Campground on Deer Isle in Maine. We will be heading out on Saturday morning in kayaks to hit the local caches that are accessible by water. It looks like there are at least five we can get to. This will be a training exercise for those that have never used there GPS’s on the water. We have someone coming with us that is experienced in this.
We have site number #1 reserved for us. It was the only site open for this weekend event. It can hold four or five tents and there is overflow space available if we get more then 5 tents. The overflow is not right at site #1 but we can use site number #1 for a meeting spot. We have been told that they always have room for overflow tenting. So it should not be a problem. If you do not want to spend the night at the campground then you can still join us without spending the night. You are more then welcome.
If you are planning on coming and spending the night please post so I can keep the campground informed of how many tents will be there and how much overflow we will need.
We have a small grill and everyone can bring their own food to cook.
Like I said our goal is to kayak and use or GPS on the water and for those that have done this before you can share your experiences and teach some skills and tricks to us new people. Then at the end of the day we can sit around and cook dinner and reflect on the day and share stories and pass on ideas and information.
Goals for this event include:
1. Sharing and showing others how to use a GPS.
2. Passing on helpful information for finding caches.
3. Exchanging travel bus to move along.
And anything else that may come up.
Things to bring:
1. You and anyone interested in attending.
2. The food that you want to eat.
3. Chairs to sit in.
4. A good attitude.
5. Tent and sleeping gear if you plan on spending the night.
6. If you have an extra grill it might help.
7. Bathing suit, just in case.
8. Travel bugs to pass along.
9. Kayak or canoe if you wish.
Team2hunt 07-17-2005, 11:43 AM The team will be there and spending the night. 7am at Walmart is ok with us. Is that anywhere near the Home Depot in Augusta? Sorry I only know one place to shop in that town. hehehe

Yup - same place. Coming off I95, you'll see WalMart before you get to Home Depot.
7 am.....and not a work day....I just dont know!! Guess I'll be the passanger sleeping !! :D
WhereRWe? 08-09-2005, 07:56 AM What is the plan for non-kayakers?
Is everyone going to meet before the kayak trip? Or after? What time? Any single or duo want to join us in the Deer Isle cache hunt?
(RULOST2? and I will be there for 2 days - but we like the comforts of a motel in Eastport! LOL!)
The G Team 08-09-2005, 06:40 PM The 7:30 AM meeting at Wal-Mart seems like a good plan. I'm not sure if we'll be 2 or 3, and if going for the day or camping--but would enjoy certainly enjoy some team caching.

Beach Comber 08-09-2005, 07:34 PM My plans are still not concrete and may not be until a couple of days before. I'm hoping to go, but we'll see as it gets closer.
covefarm 08-10-2005, 07:40 AM I am hoping that I will be able to hop over from MDI, but it depends upon work with my husband on the 20th. Thanks, covefarm
becket 08-10-2005, 10:41 AM i'm hoping to get at least 2 more caches out before the event i just have to get going on it!
WhereRWe? 08-10-2005, 02:48 PM i'm hoping to get at least 2 more caches out before the event i just have to get going on it!
Sheesh! You've got 10 days - you should get 4-5 more caches out! LOL!
(Make some of them easy - we're after the numbers, after all. :o )
becket 08-10-2005, 05:47 PM oh the pressure!
Triple-G 08-14-2005, 07:04 PM Triple-G (Dana and Nancy) will be attending and camping overnight. I posted my reply on the "other" website, but my husband thought I should post on here too. I just went to the Old Quarry Campground website, and it looks really nice.:) What will the cost be for us? About what time do you expect to be there? We are going to drive there on our own, and not meet at Wal-Mart. Umm...guess that about covers it. Should we exchange cell phone numbers in case of change in plans?
attroll 08-15-2005, 12:50 AM I can not remember but I think each person was $14 for addons to the campsite. That was what the wweb site said anyways.
As far as what time we are going to meet. Hmm. Some of us are meeting at Walmart in Augusta at 7 am. I don't know the exact driving time. But I created a route on my Topo and it told me the driving time was 2 hours and 36 minutes. So I am guessing we should all meet about 10 am. That will give us 1/2 hour to play with. What does everyone think of that?
becket 08-15-2005, 06:30 AM 2 1/2 hours is a generous estimate - whether you head to bgr and come down from there or if you head to belfast. given summer saturday traffic, this is probably an accurate estimate. it usually takes me 2 hours and 15 min (or less), but i drive pretty fast i think it is shorter going to belfast, and certainly prettier. also, i was talking yesterday to my friend judy hill, who gave the shore acres preserve land to the island heritage trust. she told me that the nature conservancy and the iht have decided to discuss geocaching. they thought they would not let geocachers put caches in their preserves. judy told them that all the preserves already had caches in them. the nc and iht are concerned with trash and people tromping on the mosses. i told judy that most of us are very ecologically aware /concerned and that most of us also practice cito. she said she had absolutely no problem with cachers and would be happy to pass my info on. (she is on the board of iht) i told her that now i was hesitant about putting my new cache out in the barred island preserve, but she said to go ahead. so i have 2 new caches out for the event.

Hmmm... Seems like there is a $6 parking fee for "non-campers" - has this been waived? Seems like they'd do us a favor to give the place the publicity...

What is the plan? Have the "event" before the kayakers start out or after?
parmachenee 08-15-2005, 08:12 AM Unfortunately we won't be there this weekend. Seems like another trip to visit our daughter will take it's place. But, there are other priorities you know. :D Enjoy and we will see you at the Sept. event.

When I talked to them last they told me that visitors did not have to pay anything. I will call to confirm it again.

My suggestion for people hiding caches in a preserve like this would be to make the caches easier to find so that way people will not end up trampeling the moses and other items while trying to find the cache. But this is just my suggestion.

I just called the campground and if you are only visiting you don't have to pay the $6 fee. The $6 fee is for people who are parking there and are going kayaking and things like that for the whole day. But if you vistiting another site there is not fee.
The price for spending the night is $14 per person. They said about 20 people can fit on the site camping wise if we put the cars in the parking lot. I can not confirm this because I have never been there. Maybe we can get Becket to drive down there one day before the weekend and see how big site #1 is.

I agree with Rick (Attroll) if you had a cache, let's say in a rock wall, then of course people are going to move rocks and such trying to find the cache. Make it accessible easily enough so nothing has to be disturbed in order to find the cache. It's hard to practice LNT (leave no trace) when you have to tear a wall apart looking for the cache especially when the hint says in a rock wall. The same goes with preserves and such where you have to go off trail,in order to find the cache. Keep it off trail enough so the ordinary visitor wouldn't come across it but a cacher would have to look a little harder. Hope that made some sense.

You 'da man!!!
I hate caches where you have to pay to get in. There was one cache in New Brunswick where the fee to get into the park was $8 EACH. (We didn't pay, we didn't search, and we didn't log the DNF...)
becket 08-15-2005, 09:52 PM i have certainly been aware when i placed my caches of the damage that could be done in the areas by a lot of people. my shore acres cache is a woods-y area with no moss, the tennis preserve and my new one (not listed yet) are on the shore, so no damage should occur. the crockett cove cache is in a mossy area - and i do worry about that. if my guilt gets the better of me, i will remove it. i know the woman who oversees the crockett cove preserve, and believe me, she knows i put a cache there and will come at me with a vengance if it gets to be a problem. none of my caches are that far off the trails. it kinda bothers me that the nature conservancy and island heritage trust are zeroing in on cachers, when there are tons of people all over those preserves all the time. anyway, i will check out the quarry campsite - maybe on weds - and will let you all know about parking, etc. i'm looking forward to seeing all of you this weekend.
Beach Comber 08-16-2005, 05:25 PM UGH - not looking like I will make it after all - bummer!
becket 08-16-2005, 08:59 PM okay. i went to the campground. i got really pissed at the owner (sorry - i need to use my nice words lol) the woman behind the counter (not the owner) told me that it is $28 for the first 2 people, then $14 a person after that. i have no idea why they just don't say $14 a person, unless my math has gotten really bad. i looked at the campsite, am pretty sure it was #1, it wasn't marked that i could see, but if they told you guys 20 tents, it's probably pretty accurate. it's not far from the bathhouse/laundry/restrooms building. it looked like a nice spot. i drove through the parking lot and there seemed to be plenty of spaces. there is another space just before the campground that may possibly be used. so i wouldn't worry about parking. the woman behind the counter said that they charge $6 for non-campers to park because it takes away spaces their customers could be using. (i think there's plenty of space.) she said several times that they would work things out with you guys when you get here, as to prices and parking. so i hope one of you, when you get here, asks me my opinion of people who move to the island and start a business.
Triple-G 08-16-2005, 10:09 PM 10 works for us, and as for the rest of the "stuff", we'll deal with it when we get there...looking forward to it and to meeting you all....
attroll 08-17-2005, 01:16 AM When I talked to them on the phone they did not say that the site had room for 20 tents they told me there was room for 20 people. They also told me that there would be no charge for people that were visiting our site. They said the people who get charged the $6 parking fee are the people who use the boat launch and are gone all day.
I sure hope it was site #1 you looked at. It sounds big. They did tell me that site #1 was the biggest non-RV site they had. So it should be the right one you saw. Thank you Becket for looking for us.
On a good note. I am picking up my truck from the shop tomorrow. I was worried it would not be fixed in time to bring the kayak's with us Saturday.
WhereRWe? 08-17-2005, 07:39 AM So I am guessing we should all meet about 10 am. That will give us 1/2 hour to play with. What does everyone think of that?
We'll be there at 10.
Since we'll be stopping at Dunkin Donuts in Newport on the way, does anyone want us to pick up a box of Munchkins? Or does everyone else plan to stop anyway and revisit the famous micro-cache there? LOL!
attroll 08-17-2005, 01:19 PM We'll be there at 10.
Since we'll be stopping at Dunkin Donuts in Newport on the way, does anyone want us to pick up a box of Munchkins? Or does everyone else plan to stop anyway and revisit the famous micro-cache there? LOL!Newport. That is a long ways from Deer Isle. Do you think there will be any munckins left by the time you get there. LOL.
It looks like a buch of us are meeting at the Walmart in Augusta at 7 am. From there we will get back on the Turnpike and heading north and getting off at the next exit which will be Route 3 and heading towards Belfast catching route 1 to route 15 towards Deer Isle from there it looks the the following routes 199, 175, 176, 15, Airport Rd, Cross Rd, 15A and then start looking for signs.
If I am wrong then someone send me the right directions or give me better directions. I have never been here before.
attroll 08-17-2005, 01:32 PM After looking at the maps and the caches it looks like the closest cach for kayaking is 5 miles from the campground to the cache called Kayaker's Delight (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=4688c4fb-12f0-42d2-882c-976f611af934). So that would be a round trip of about 10 miles. It would all be island hoping every 4,000 feet or less. So my plan would be to try and navagate through the islands and get that cache and head back. I don't know if we would have time for anymore then that one. I don't know if 10 miles will be to much for others either. Unless there is a boat launch near Mountainville. When we get back we could take a couple of cars if we have time and hit the rest of the caches or do them the next day.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Nuffer 08-17-2005, 01:39 PM How feasible is it to canoe out to Deer Isle in relatively calm seas?
WhereRWe? 08-17-2005, 04:26 PM Does anyone have any other suggestions?
I plan on doing some fishing. Anyone want some fish for Saturday night? Mackerel? Flounder?

I like the idea of Kayaker's Delight. There are plenty of places to "shore up" if need be. I just heard the weather, and it may even be dry Saturday!!
Haffy 08-17-2005, 05:47 PM You don't have to canoe out to Deer Island you can drive to it.
WhereRWe? 08-17-2005, 05:55 PM You don't have to canoe out to Deer Island you can drive to it.
Sheesh! And I was just about to tell him that he'd be better off taking the ferry... :p :p :p
Haffy 08-17-2005, 11:03 PM Just for some more info regarding the distance to Ram Island the home of Kayaker's Delight cache. I have a little program called Geocalc that measures distances between waypoints and I put in the waypoints for the campground and Kayakers Delight and I got 2.804 miles or 2.441 nautical miles so it doesnt seem to be the 5 miles that was mentioned previously but of course that is as the crow flies. JFYI

JFYIYes you are right 2.8 is almost 3 miles. So lets just round it up to 3 miles to be safe. Now you have to remember that we can not kayak to Ram Island in a straight line. So I added a couple more miles for precaution. But we should be able to get there and back in 6 miles or less depending on what everyone wants to do. Some may want to beach on a couple islands and maybe swim or just do some beacj combing. We will just play it as we paddle along.
becket 08-18-2005, 06:37 AM i don't know the route #s (never needed them - i seem to know the roads by heart.) when you come onto deer isle, (and PLEASE enjoy the bridge - think of me driving over it twice a day), you don't have to go on the airport road. just stay on 15 down to stonington. you will go over a small bridge with a street light - being repaired - and go a mile or so further and, on the left, you will see ron's mobil, which is now an irving lol. go left here and you will be going into oceanville (where i grew up just a few years ago hahaha) go about 2 miles and you will see a marsh on both sides of the road. take the first right after that - i was just there but can't remember what the sign said. go to the very end of the road, past the sunshine seafood place. the really big building you will pass when you first go in the dirt road is the building where jfk's memorial (in washington dc) was made. the grout trail cache can be reached from the camp ground. they have made some trails. or you can go back out onto the tarred road, go right and go about 10 feet and go into the parking lot there.
becket 08-18-2005, 06:38 AM i think you can launch small boats from the town wharf - that would put you a little closer. just check with the harbormaster, steve johnson.
WhereRWe? 08-18-2005, 07:26 AM i think you can launch small boats from the town wharf - that would put you a little closer. just check with the harbormaster, steve johnson.
What about FISHING from the town wharf??? :D :D :D
Triple-G 08-18-2005, 08:31 AM We aren't going to be able to make it, so sorry for the short notice. Our dogsitter plans fell through, my son's car is in the garage and my aunt passed away. Too much going on at once to be able to get away and enjoy some time on our own (story of our lives!!!) we hope you all have a fun and safe trip....we'll be thinking of you....
Triple-G
becket 08-18-2005, 10:56 AM you can probably fish most anywhere, as long as you stay out of the way of the working boats (at this point in the summer, lobster fishermen usually don't have a whole lot of patience left.) there are wharfs around, and it's beautiful in webb's cove, where you will be camping. there is an awesome stone wharf there. i don't know if it's long past mackeral fishing time - i kinda lost track when my sons took my fishing rod away from me. (i suppose it was for a good reason, but they just aren't very sporting!)
becket 08-19-2005, 10:33 AM i just read in the island paper that the mackeral are here. they tend to stay around the docks, so the quarry should be a good place to catch them. the town dock or the co-op 2 dock would also be a good place to fish for them. they are so much fun to catch. now, if i can get my fishing pole back from my sons...
attroll 08-19-2005, 12:09 PM I look forward to seeing all who are going. People have been emailing me asking what time we are meeting at the campground. I have been telling them 10 am. There is a group of us meeting at the Wal-Mart parking lot in Augusta at 7 am Saturday morning and leaving from there. I don't think it will take us till 10 am to get to the campground but we can hang around and get setup if no one is in out site. If someone is in our site then we will linger around somewhere for 1/2 hour. The check in time is 10:30 so last nights group has to be out by then.
So here is what I have for directions form Becket.
Stay on 15 down to Stonington, you will go over a small bridge with a street light - being repaired - and go a mile or so further and, on the left, you will see Ron's mobile, which is now an Irving lol. Go left here and you will be going into Oceanville (where i grew up just a few years ago hahaha) go about 2 miles and you will see a marsh on both sides of the road, take the first right after that - I was just there but can't remember what the sign said. There are several of us meeting in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Augusta Saturday morning at 7am. We will have kayaks on our vehicles. But that may be out of the way for you. We plan on meeting at the campground at site #1 at 10 am. The check in time is 10:30 for the campsite so if we are early we will just linger around for a little bit. Some will probably be there a little earlier but I figured 10 am for a start. We can socialize for a little bit and then those of us wanting to kayak can head out kayaking. We plan on kayaking out to Kayaker's Delight cache and then getting that and then deciding from there whether we are going to kayak more or head back to the campground. There are going to be some that are not going to kayak and I don’t know which category you are in. Those people can stay at the campsite and socialize and do what ever they want while the rest of us are kayaking or can head out as a group doing all the local geocaches in the area while we are kayaking. There are 9 geocaches on the island that we will be on. There are also some on the way to the island. This is an overnight event so you arte more then welcome to pitch a tent and camp with us. The price is $14 per person.
I have never bee n to the island or campground but I have been told by someone who lives there that you stay on route 1 out of Belfast for about 11 miles and then take route 15.
From route 15 this is the word for word directions she gave me “stay on 15 down to Stonington, you will go over a small bridge with a street light - being repaired - and go a mile or so further and, on the left, you will see Ron's mobile, which is now an Irving lol. Go left here and you will be going into Oceanville (where I grew up just a few years ago hahaha) go about 2 miles and you will see a marsh on both sides of the road, take the first right after that - I was just there but can't remember what the sign said. I don’t know what time you plan on arriving. But if you get there and there is no one at site #1. Just make yourself at home and comfortable and someone will most likely show up shortly. I don’t know what time us kayakers will be coming back in from kayaking. But we will be heading out probably between 10 and 10:30 or shortly after. But the site is everyone’s. This started out as a kayak event cache for kayakers but a lot of people showed interest in coming that were not going to be kayaking. So now there are two groups. The kayakers and the non kayakers.

The G Team 08-19-2005, 04:40 PM We plan to be at the campground around 10:00 or so. We will be with the driving group and probably just down for the day.
Mainiac1957 08-19-2005, 05:44 PM It will be really good to see you again. It's been way to long for sure.
covefarm 08-19-2005, 05:58 PM It looks unlikely that I will be able to come. It is too bad because in the scheme of things it is a "hop, skip and a jump" from MDI. Hope you all have fun. Barbara
The G Team 08-19-2005, 08:39 PM Hey, would anyone be willing to email us a copy of their PQs for the coastal area? We just re-upped our premium membership this afternoon, but geocaching.com says it will take a full business day to update our account, so we can't get PQs for the trip tomorrow. Thanks!

attroll 08-19-2005, 09:25 PM Man you would not believe the luck I have had all week. I got my truck fixed after sweeting it down to the last minute. The brakes were bad. The mechanics replace all the calipers. So I drove it home and parked it. I got off work early tonight so I took the truck down to the gas station to get it full of gas and have everything ready to go in the morning. Well at the first intersection I lost my brakes. Thank god no one was going through the intersection. I made it to the gas station and filled up and was hoping it was something simple. So when I get home I see that the right brake is leaking fluid so I take the brakes apart and find where they broke a piece of the cylinder off in the caliper (the plunger) and it was leaking all over.
It is not 9:20 at night and I have no where to get parts for the brakes. If I could get parts I could fix it myself like I should have done in the first place. So now I am stuck going tomorrow without brining my kayaks. Man am I upset. We were really looking forward to this. We are still coming though.
Is there anyone coming by my way that can pick up a kayak or two. Please.
Haffy 08-19-2005, 09:46 PM Talk to T2h maybe he can give you a hand.
Mainiac1957 08-19-2005, 10:06 PM Strap them on the roof of Donna's car.
attroll 08-19-2005, 10:29 PM Ok we have come up with and an alturnitive. I am borrowing a friends car with a rack on top that will fit one kayak. So one of use will be without a kayak. So if anyone is passing our way still and has room for one kayka let me know real quick.
attroll 08-21-2005, 03:41 PM Wow. What a great weekend. We did not see a lot of sun but the weather was cooperative and nice. The kayak trip was awesome. There were 9 of us in kayaks and I can not speak for everyone but I had a great time. I saw a bunch of islands for possible kayak events in the future. I think I would like to have a overnight kayak trip on one of the islands.
I though Tat was a great kayakers they way he talked but we found out different when he could not hold on to his lunch. LOL. Sorry Tat.
Andy, loved Kim she is a great sport for putting up with us for the weekend and enjoyed her company. Bring here any time you want.
Cameoooooo you are one pratical joker aren't you. We all owe you one. This will be talked about for a long time.
Team2hunt 08-21-2005, 07:36 PM You can speak for me. I had a GREAT time. You pick the island and I'm in. And I can guess who the other 8 will be. Met some new people. Ordinaryshark, there's a neat story to this. Hope you put it on the site. The thread for how we all came up with our names. Some of the stories I will be telling didn't even happen AT the event. Ha Rick. Directions or not, we made it. I know I had a hand in the mistakes. Wait til you hear what happened on the way home. Maybe Ordinaryshark should be the one to tell that story. This has be to an annual event. Kayak Kache N Jet Ski event 06. :D :D Thanks Rick.
Sudonim 08-21-2005, 09:44 PM This was an awesome weekend! The weather gave us doubts, but it was all good in the end. The kayaking was great, and so was the company. Glad that the non-kayakers could meet us for more caching and the BBQ too. I'd be up for an annual event here too. Thanks Rick and Donna, and thanks to Becky for all the great new caches in the area.
I'll write some more, hopefully get my kayak "experience" in better "perspective"! :) Thanks for putting on the event, it was a blast.
Thanks Rick and Donna for a memorable event. This is a kayaker's playground. I can't wait to get back up again.
Becke, thanks for putting out all those great caches. I left plenty so I have a good reason to come back!!
It's been over 20 years since I got a chance to do a few runs on Blue Hill Reversing Falls. On the first run, I demonstrated how not to take a 19 foot boat through rapids! I hope Haffy and Mainiac got pictures!!
Thanks again to everybody, it was fun to go out with such a great group of friends, new and old!
TwoMaineiacs 08-22-2005, 09:52 PM Sounds like a great time. We are sorry to have missed it but had an obligation that couldn't be shifted. Hopefully this fall we'll make a long weekend and get up to do the land caches. Thanks for sharing the experience with your posts. And did anyone get a photo of the 19' kayak in the falls?
Anne
Haffy 08-23-2005, 08:54 AM Yes I did just go back to the photo gallery and its right after my photo of the Kampfire.
