View Full Version : Geocaching for numbers in Maine

Many geocachers have posted staggering single day find counts in other parts of the country which made wonder how many someone could find in one day in Maine. I think that any more than 35 finds in one day would be impressive. That would be a cache every half hour for 18 hours. Is 40+ possible? I don't think there is an area dense enough in caches to log big numbers without losing lots of time driving.

It's taken me over three and a half years to close in on 100 finds and I have enjoyed everyone of those finds. It's sad to think that there are places I could go outside of Maine and double my find count in one day.

I can honestly say that at this time here in Maine 40 caches in one day would be nearly impossible. I have done 9 in one day. I know some who have done 18 in one day here in Maine. But there are not as many caches here like in other states. Some cities in other states have over a thousand caches in them. That is why some can get up to 40 in one day. When you have that many caches in such a small area then they are usually not quality caches. They are just caches placed for those that are "All about the numbers". I hope we never get that bad here in Maine.

My record for Maine caches is 11 in a day. But I have tied this recored 5 or 6 times. A fair number more is possible if a cacher hasn't allready found any in a higher desity area. I'm sure if I was out to break my record, I could, but I'd rather enjoy my caches unless #11 comes at 3:00 in the afternoon and I have nothing else to do. I do beleive when I make it to the Presque Isle area again, I will break my record.

The numbers are important if they represent an accomplishment, and I think most Maine/New England/Eastern Canada cachers can be proud of their numbers. Even someone who can get 18 Maine caches can be VERY proud of that because we all know they spent a LOT of hours and covered a LOT of miles to get that. :D :D :D

was 19 and that was by starting at 6:00 AM and going to 7:00 PM and covering about 280 miles. Of course I had two DNF but they were hunts just the same.

There are also a few teams that have several people out caching and placing all the logs under the same account. I guess that's fine for them, but it's not what we're into geocaching for. The only time we can be competitive at this point is for first finds, and even that is becoming difficult! Too many insomniac retired guys out there... ;) So for us, it's all about the experience: the trip, the hunt, the scenery, etc. I'd much rather be telling a story like "there we were climbing up this mountain..." than "there I was looking under this lamppost..."

I think the way Maine caches are placed is just fine with me. I would rather take all day exploring different spots and doing nice hikes then traveling from Walmart to Walmart looking under numerous lampost bases for micros. My best day is 13 and that was most of the day from like 7 to 6. Yesterday I did 12 and most of them were on MDI ( Mount Desert Island ) and 2 or 3 of those were virtuals but nice areas to visit though. I agree with Brdad ,if one hasnt done any caches up in the county then I would expect you could get a very good count in one day. Blevesque, J Cyr and now Northwoods Explorer have placed many new caches for us to find. So one of these days a trip to the county will be in order, maybe the next event coming up in September. Lets keep the caches of a good quality here in Maine and not get caught up in the numbers game so to speak, but each to his own. Just my 2 cents.

I am new to this geo-caching world and the joy has been relishing new sights and sounds and sharing them with my family. I have lived on MDI for over 25 years and I had the pleasure of visiting for the first time I MUST add, one of the most beautiful spots I have been to yet: Big Hunter's Beach. I would not have been there if it hadn't been for geo-caching. I guess that is one reason why I am readily hooked..........we have bonding stories to share amongst the family even with our just over a dozen caches thus far. Covefarm

We've only been caching since 4/10/05 and I'm SHOCKED that we already have 86 caches. Most we have ever done was 6 in a day, this past weekend over in NH. Probably would have stopped earlier but our friends were gung-ho, new at caching and we didn't want to blunt their enthusiasm :) . Like others, for us it isn't the numbers but the views. I've told so many people about Morse Mountain that I should get a commission. We do look forward to getting the 100th find since that is like a milestone and once over, the numbers don't matter.

Our best day was 5 last winter and we took the time to enjoy each one. Not for the find, but for the beauty the world has to offer. And they were all in our backyard, so to speak. You gotta love that. :) :)

We wont' be doing Rattlesnake Mountain as our 100th unless we wait for a while. Looks like it is missing but the owner knows.

It seems as though someone has stolen this cache. I will replace it in the next couple of weeks and update the information. I'm sorry for any inconvience."

I'm disappointed to see that cache is missing too. That's one that I had also thought about doing for #100 this weekend.

well i agree with Brdad, i think ten or eleven in one day is plenty , well at least if you plan on enjoying the caches.... some of the other state place many micros in one area.. i like the maine way

I did 16 on my last day of caching before leaving Maine. The first 8 were with a group and I think, with the exception of 2, we all found them individually. The other 8 were in interesting locations not far from major roads. In Maine I figured if I could get 5 in a day and had some interesting hikes that I was doing good. Down here in Maryland it's a easier to get the numbers (I hit 200 Saturday) as most parks have at least one cache but I sure miss Maine scenery. There are some VERY creative multis down here and 1 Project APE cache. If anyone is south of Baltimore, try "Dark." If y'all are coming to MD and want some recommendations, feel free to drop me a line.

As much as we all think "it's all about the numbers", most of the fun is in the hunt and the places caching takes you to visit. We have done 9-10 in a day and have enjoyed doing 3-4 a day just as well. I think when you get a few under your belt you get a little more relaxed.
Well I gotta go to bed, gotta be up and out by 05:00 to beat Haffy on a FTF in Pittsfield.
See how relaxed I am.

Next time you go to Florida, stop by Rocky Mount NC, it is on I-95, we have over a 100 caches in our city which is about the same size as Bangor. A lot of micros with some that border on devilsh and evil or as you say in Maine "wicked evil." Will be glad to be your escort for a day of caching.

I think 17 in one day is our best for number but the most memorable days were the ones we only got one cache...Deathwish 1, Gorge-ous (sp), Half-mile (hockey pucks), Etna Bog with friends, Black Mtn. (don't remember the cache name), Mountain View and of course, Hole in the Wall with friends on a multi-cache day, to name a few. Yuh, quality makes it worthwhile. :D

Memorial Day KK and I went to Branch Pond and kayaked to the cache. One cache was logged by both of us that day. And what a wonderful day of caching it was. Quality not quantity. Caching in Maine!! :)

I think we did 13 in one day but they were not all hard by any means with Dalmations finds in there they add up quick.

I just love the experience. The Pleasant Surprise 2 was so awesome for me that I really didn't care about the cache when I got to the top..... but I did log it. lol

I like a challenge to get to a cache. I like them on top of mountains or somewhere I have to kayak to. Team2hunt and I only found one on Monday, but what a great find. We paddled to it "FTP" (First to Paddle). I left a TB that wants to GO PADDLIN. It's just waiting for the next adverturous person.

I got my first bike 8 yrs ago, mainly to helped me with quiting smoking.Soon it was to see how far I could ride it.25.50,and 100 mile rides, then a trip from maine to vermont and back. The next year a friend and I flew to washington state and bike back across the country. That was three years ago, since then I have ridden at least 2000 miles a year. That is til a friend asked me if I had ever been Geocaching!!!The bikes are sitting in the barn and I find all I want to do is go find a new cache somewhere. After the first 100 I told myself, you be able to slow down enjoy doing one quality cache a day.Like deathwish#1,yankee, nature trail or macgyver's,but thats not going to happen. If I decide to do a quality cache I find i want to include some easy ones for the numbers.I keep saying I'm going to take the bike to Bangor,Waterville or Portland and use it to geocache. This certainly would be the best of both worlds, but could I do them fast enough???

Nice alternative to smoking!
I'd love to see you bike for my You Sank My Battleship! (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=46728) (GCB688) by brdad (http://www.geocaching.com/profile/default.asp?A=61905) (4/2) cache. Maybe we could start a 50/50 on how long it would take you and 50% goes to geocachingmaine.org and the other half to whoever guesses closest.

Going back to the original posts, I'm not so sure 40 in a day would be so tough nowadays if a cacher was remotely familiar with the area and had not done any caching here in Maine as of yet. Also, most of the "official" counts are in a 24 hour period. I think most of us like to sleep a few hours.

We've found most of our caches in the same general area (Brunswick and surrounding) and there are still a lot there for us to find. My girls and I did three of those Dalmation ones in one day along with another traditional. Got to tell you, they much prefer to find nice locations. The micros were in spots that we hadn't ever payed attention to but they were too quick of finds for the kids and they got borred with it. I did them for the numbers since were are just above 40. To each his own but more than 5 hasn't happened with kids. I am greatful for all the different types out here in Maine for us to choose from. Thanks to all for that.

I think doing 40 in a 24 hour period would be quite easily attainable now with the densities as they are.

I agree Haffy, Ive been looking and within a 20mi radius of my house there are 63 regular caches(of which 37 are micros), 7 multis(1 micro), and 13 mystery ones(7micro) that I could go after. Wow, not too long ago I was at a point that the nearest cache was quite a ways off. I guess I should get back at it!!:o

Sure, you do all of my caches you haven't done yet and enough more to make up 40 in a 24 hour period and I'll give you a beer for every cache over 40 you do. :D

That's a lot of work, I'll be too tired to drink after all that... how about you go ahead of me and hide a beer in the cache I'm about to find....:D

seriously though... that would be kinda cool to make a cache finding contest... (not like one of those pre rigged ones where they hide all the caches just for the van of 20 people to find every 10')
