I wasn't quite sure where to place this thread, but I figure this area is as good a place as any. . . .

I picked up some used ammo cans at a military surplus store in Brewer today and the boxes he was selling last week for $5 each were marked down to $2.50 and the larger ones were $4. They're a bit dirty, but clean up with a bit of elbow grease and windex . . . I thought these seemed like good prices for any one in the process of setting up a cache or switching over to a more durable cache container.

Funny you should bring up this subject. Today on my way back from doing the caches in Newport and the one in Exeter I stopped in at the Army Surplus at the Triangle in Newport. The had the 30 cal. ammo boxes for $2.50 and the 50 cal. for #3.98 and even bigger ones for a little more. I thought that was a really good price and closer than Bangor.

I picked up a few of those to.

A cleaning tip - After removing the worst of the dirt - Wipe the entire can down with some fingernail polish remover. It will completely remove the yelllow lettering, and leaves the green paint underneath intact, but softens it just enough so you should not need any primer to do a quality paint job on it.

I think removing the militarty lettering not only looks better, but might help keep a muggle from getting excited and think it's a bomb or something. Painting it is even better!

Their price has dropped. The last time I was there, they had a the dirty, rusty cans for almost $5.

Huh? Must be a big and sudden surplus in old ammo cans for some reason! :)

I just found out that the Bangor and Newport store are the same company . . . heard an ad on the radio on my way in to work and they were talking about both locations in the same ad.

Actually, this is true and not a political statement. With so many reserve and national guard members being called to active duty, they're all required to "train up" before deployment. And this includes weapons training/familiarization/qualification.

(Been there, done that...)

With so many reserves and n :D
