View Full Version : Marooned Travel Bug
gpsfun 09-24-2005, 08:04 AM A geocacher "from away" took a canoe trip to the Cunliffe Islands and dropped off a plastic bag containing a slip of paper for a log plus travel bug TBGYE9. Since I was unable to publish the cache page, the travel bug is now stuck at N 46° 43.517 W 069° 22.062.
If anyone goes near that location, I'm sure the travel bug owner would be happy to see it picked up and put back into circulation. The trash - err, cache should be picked up as well.
Thank you.

Mainiac1957 09-24-2005, 08:40 AM I was up that direction on Labor Day this year and I was still a long way from that location. It will have to be someone whose running the Allagash River to retrieve that one. If the bears and racoons don't get it first.

Your going to have a problem with this one. Just because we live in Maine does not mean we all get out in nowhere land that much. This one is literally located in the middle of nowhere. I hate to say this but I think this one will be stuck there for a long time. It might as well as be written off.
Hiram357 09-24-2005, 12:57 PM It's not as bad as it looks fellas, I put the coords into my Geocaching Command Center (my laptop with fancy mapping and GPS progs) and found some roads getting within 2 miles of the abandoned TB. I for one propose a "Search & Rescue" I plan on doing a cache on Katahdin and a few around Piscataquis County,(Oct 1st and 2nd) so that'll put me in the area. I don't want to venture that far into the woods by myself though. So if someone else wants to do a weekend adventure I'll be more than willing to go in search of the lost TB.
attroll 09-24-2005, 01:10 PM Let us know which weekend it will be.
Hiram357 09-24-2005, 01:13 PM October 1st and 2nd, Katahdin on Sat, and Random Caches or search party on sunday
Hiram357 09-24-2005, 01:19 PM another thought I just had... if that TB isn't taken out before november, you can probably count on it being gone with the snow.
Hiram357 09-24-2005, 09:40 PM Well ATTroll is unable to join me in the journey, so if there is anyone else willing to endure a long journey by jeep then by foot that wants to join in just say so.
*note: by looking at the topo and sat maps this is not going to be an easy journey by land, apparently these guys took a guided trip down the alagash and stayed near a campsite that is marked on page 61 of the atlas
Wouldn't it be easier to wait till winter and snowsled to it.(RIck)??
Hiram357 09-24-2005, 10:34 PM Wouldn't it be easier to wait till winter and snowsled to it.(RIck)??if i had a sled yeah, but i don't so no, i've got snow shoes, but someone would have to be a glutton for punishment to do that. i've found roads on maps that get very close to a campsite that i believe that stopped at, and is possibly where they hid the TB so it shouldnt be difficult (depending how the roads are) but the hiking part is questionable.
And... if the snow is deep enough to sled on, how ya gunna find the TB?
another thought about the sleds... i've been on a few trail breaking rides and it's not too fun, unless you have a sled wider than the women up that way it could take days to get that far. it would be much easier (and safer) to get it before the snow falls
attroll 09-24-2005, 10:47 PM Even if you had a sled it would be very hard to pin point a cache under the snow. We don't even know what it is hidden in.
GPSFUN:
Can you give more infor on the container?

Look in the Maine atlas on Map 61 (D-5) its near the Cunliffe Islands, there's a campsite near there
Cache Maine 09-25-2005, 09:15 AM dropped off a plastic bag
A plastic bag...
Hiram357 09-25-2005, 10:57 AM A plastic bag...would that be a trash bag, a clear bag, a ziplock bag, a plastic back with the yellow and blue seals.... cmon cameo that's not helping much :p
Cache Maine 09-25-2005, 11:40 AM would that be a trash bag, a clear bag, a ziplock bag, a plastic back with the yellow and blue seals.... cmon cameo that's not helping much :pKing Hiram! I'm not sure! I guess we do need GPSFUN to clarify! :p
attroll 09-25-2005, 12:14 PM Someone will have to write to GPSFUN to get clarification ion this. It says dropped off in a plastic bag. Does that mean it is in a container in a plastic bag or just sitting in a hiding spot in a plastic bag? I would write GPSFUN but I an packing up and heading out for a week in about 1 1/2 hours.
Yeehawma 09-25-2005, 01:38 PM Wow! Sounds like quite a challenge! Kinda makes me wish I was (a) retired and (b) living in Maine again. I will be arriving in Maine Oct 1st for a small family reunion in Farmington, then going to the county, but won't have the free time to aid in the search. I will be following this adventure of the lost TB though. Bravo! to you Hiram357 for taking on the challenge!

Yeah, I just don't believe somebody should lose a travel bug just because some dingbat thinks it'd be a good idea to drop it off where nobody is ever going to get to it. And it's also a bad idea to leave something like that out there where it could be damaging to an unsuspecting animal thinking that it's food. And if it was my TB that was irresponsibly placed I would hope that someone else would go out of their way to rescue it for me. Besides I'll be getting my new Garmin Foretrex in about 3 days and I really wanna see what it can do (it's got a quadrahelix antenna) and it gives me an excuse to go bushwhackin and fourwheelin with the Jeep. Which as an added note still has an empty co-pilot seat.
Beach Comber 09-25-2005, 11:08 PM Can I send you a list of my TB's that have disappeared? Sounds like you have persistence and stealth well beyond mine that would perhaps give them a second chance in their TB life. It is always disappointing when they disappear. I have had a few that landed amongst the missing nearly immediately - either the cache disappeared altogether or the TB got removed and never logged. And some that traveled a bit and then disappeared. And I even have one that resurfaced and has traveled far. You just never know.
WhereRWe? 09-26-2005, 06:56 AM Can I send you a list of my TB's that have disappeared? Sounds like you have persistence and stealth well beyond mine that would perhaps give them a second chache in their TB life. It is always disappointing when they disappear. I have had a few that landed amongst the missing nearly immediately - either the cache disapeared altogether or the TB got removed and never logged. And some that traveled a bit and then disappeared. I just had a TB resurface after having been "missing" for over a year. Great feeling, since we get a great deal of pleasure out of tracing our bugs. (and of helping other bugs towards theri goal.)
we3beans 09-26-2005, 11:12 AM I guess if it is in a plastic bag there won't be need for my metal detector.
You might want to get in touch with techscout in Aroostook. She may or may not be able to help you with this. I'm guessing she is going to know something about the area that we may not know. Also, she may know someone else who might be willing to trek it with you.
Cache'n Jacksons 09-26-2005, 05:59 PM A metal detector may pick up the metal (aluminum?) travel bug tag. But I don't know if I'd want to lug it for 2 miles... :)
WhereRWe? 09-26-2005, 06:14 PM I think this would be a GREAT opportunity for the next "Kayak Kache" event!
Go for it! :D :D :D
I haven't done the Allagash yet, so I can only say what I see on my map.
There is a road fairly close to the cache, but it looks like access to the river would be rather steep. There is not likely to be any trail. The terrain is probably very thick brush because the wilderness waterway has a buffer zone to hide timber harvesting as much as posible.
The cache is on an island. The water appears to be rather fast, judging by the width reported on the map.
Don't expect anyone to be quick to the rescue if anything goes wrong.
I like the Kayak Kache idea, but I bet this is a bit more time consuming than most can commit to.
travel bugs turn up missing everyday. I could see a SAR if the bug was more local. However this will be at least an all day adventure. Why is this one any different??
Cache'n Jacksons 09-26-2005, 08:05 PM I could see doing it for the adventure, but why bother if you can't get credit for finding the cache! ;)
Hiram357 09-26-2005, 08:46 PM Is it on the Island? My computer showed it to be over by the campsite.
Mine shows the campground is on the island! For some reason, I cannot get the website to take an attachement, so I'll post in the photo gallery.
Hiram357 09-26-2005, 10:16 PM Well boys, look like were gunna hafta wait for the river to freeze (my map was on wrong UTM)
WhereRWe? 09-27-2005, 07:32 AM I could see doing it for the adventure, but why bother if you can't get credit for finding the cache! ;)
Good point - do we know why GSFUN did not approved the cache? I don't believe I saw that mentioned... ;)
Good point - do we know why GSFUN did not approved the cache? I don't believe I saw that mentioned... ;)
He said that the Cacher was "from away" so I would guess that he did not approve it cause there is no local person to maintain it.
Geocaching is not permitted anywhere in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
This is not the first time a Geocacher has violated their rules. By removing the "geo-trash", we can prove that Geocachers are responsible.
In this case we need to also consider how much damage would be done by bushwacking to the site and putting search and rescue people at risk if something goes wrong. Maybe there is a trail, maybe not. The river may be low enough now to cross easily. The only way to know is to go or ask someone.
Running the Allagash is (I think) a minimum week long adventure. There are not many "sanctioned" launches.
t_webb 10-01-2005, 06:45 PM Okay - I admit it - I am the complete idiot that messed up this TB. I screwed up - it was kind of a last minute decision and what else can I say but I'm sorry. I'm new to geocaching - I failed on this one, etc, etc, etc. I just don't want everyone to yell at me and lecture me about it - I now know that this was a BIG MISTAKE. Now that we have that out of the way, rescuing the TB will totally make my day.
Here is more info for anyone that is interested in looking for this guy.
- On cunliffe island. Anyone going down the Allagash will pass this island and it also has a campsite on it.
- The TB tag is attached to a 3-headed plastic dog (not my idea - it came w/ the TB). This dog is about 8 inches long and 6 inches tall. It weighs a far amount (for a TB) and will not blow away.
- It is in a clear plastic bag.
- There is a very short trail once you get to the campsite - once you follow that you will come to a clearing w/ some downed trees and it is laying under one of the trees. It is covered up a bit, but not completely. The walk from the campsite isn't more than a minute or two.
- I think there are a few close roads, but w/o a map I can't say for sure.
That's about all the info I have. Again - I completely realize that I messed up on this one and if you can rescue the TB you'll be a hero.
Thanks,
Ty
attroll 10-01-2005, 07:51 PM T Webb. Thanks for clearing that up.
Hiram357 10-03-2005, 07:37 PM well there ya have it! All in favor of pilling in my jeep this winter and snow shoeing out to it say AYE!
T_webb, thanks for "fessing up". It may be geo "trash", but misplaced geocaches are the least of the trash in Maine. And, it has been a lot of fun just thinking up a way to be FTCITO. :)
Hiram357 10-03-2005, 08:47 PM I've got the road map already made up! All we need is some ice and snow
(we can get within a mile of the islands by road, we'll need to get ahold of a yearly local up that way to find out about road conditions once the white stuff hits the fan)
::start polishin them snowshoes boys::

well ya know, they're hard to get started when they're cold. They don't do anything when they're too hot. They are high maintanence, (a cheap belt could cost $45) and they don't do anything all summer except lay around the lawn.

firefighterjake 10-05-2005, 11:12 AM We can only hope Hiram's wife doesn't see this thread! :)
And now to defend the opposite sex . . . at least in my wife's case . . . she's actually pretty low maintenance . . . in fact I'm the one with the more "extravagant" tastes as I'm the one who likes the snowmobile, ATV, GPSr, computer, etc.
And in all honesty she is a real worker . . . but then again someone in the family has to do some honest work . . . I work for the City after all . . . it could be worse though . . . I could work for the State.

And this is why I always wait for the groomer to pass through or at the very least wait for a few others to break trail before I go out . . . I learned that the hard way a few years ago after getting stuck three or four times and spending countless hours unsticking myself.

Yes I do agree with you, but we had so many factors urging us to go, such as... they were our boss's sleds, alcohol, and hey who can argue against the timeless classic "what else are we gunna do?"
hollora 05-14-2006, 09:12 PM From the TB page it looks like this may not have been retreived or found yet. I think my son may be going up that way this summer. Let me know if he should look for this.
Is anyone up for a rescue attempt over the 4th of July weekend?
I think we can put in at Umsaskis Thourougfare, paddle 8 miles to Cunliffe Islnad, camp overnight and paddle 7 miles to Henderson Brook Bridge. There are at least two sets of rapids.
Team2hunt 06-03-2006, 09:45 AM If we dont have to travel to see my folks for the 4th. I'd be happy to go along. Never kayaked that far north before.

WOW!
What a trip that was!!!
I have a lot of logging to do and so much has happened here it will take a bit to get caught up.
The trip started as a simple idea, help GPSFUN and a travel bug owner. But, it grew to truely epic proportions. At last count, there were about 10 chapters to the tale. I'll try to post one a night, starting tonight.
I don't want to spoil the ending, but it is a happy one!

Yes, there was a prom queen there (let me live my fantasy). Oh there were a lot of other things going on, but we said, "What happens in the Allagash, stays in the Allagash!" I do believe Stephen King would have found lots of material....
hollora 07-11-2006, 05:12 PM Ok - KK - you can be the prom queen. Wasn't that TB actually a character from Harry Potter named Fuzzy or something?
I believe all trips - what happens ____ , stays _____. That TB was creepy.

firefighterjake 07-19-2006, 08:57 AM Great story, great pics . . . sounds like a good time was had by all.
After reading this it almost made me want to go put an illegal cache and TB somewhere else in Maine just so I could read all about the Rescue Rangers 2: The Sequel. :)
Kaching Karen 07-19-2006, 10:44 AM It's hard to believe that it was just over a year ago that I met a bunch of strangers at one of my caches who convinced me to go to an event with them. I have had such a good time with all the people I have met. The Allagash adventure cannot be totally described in writing. I only hope that the Rescue Rangers get together again for a rescue (we'll make one up, if we have to). ATroll was the host of my first event and we got to tackle the Grafton Loop with "Gypsy" last weekend. You're truly a great bunch of people.Thanks.

The Epilogue is finally posted. The opinions are not mine nor that of Geocaching Maine or any other one person unless they multiple personalities. :)
