Anyone have any good or bad experiences or knowledge about modular homes (not mobile homes)? Pros/cons? Good dealers/manufacturers vs. bad dealers/manufacturers?

I used to draw plans for the regional (southern NH) distributor for Apex Homes of PA. I also went on a tour of the factory to see how they were assembled. This particular manufacturer used construction techniques that were on par with traditional New England home construction (6" walls, R19 wall insulation, etc.) and in some cases the construction exceeded the standards because the home had to withstand transportation over the highways and the stress of being lifted with a crane. Not sure if Apex is still in business but I am sure there are plenty of local manufacturers that also have high standards. I would familiarize yourself with normal construction practices then ask for a factory tour of any manfacturer you are interested in buying from.

I had designed our current residence to be a modular home, but ended up going with stick-built because of financing issues.

Sheesh! We have kamakazi modular home transporters and their escorts coming through Solon from Quebec on a daily basis. I've been forced off the road a couple of times.

But I'd suggest visiting Edward Parker homes (http://www.edwardparkerhomes.com/), just off I95 on the Odlin Road in Bangor. I've driven by there many times and they have some nice displays. Worth a visit just to see what's available. :) :)

Most definitely. Also if they have a web address with directions that might be useful . . . I may take my wife out on a road trip tomorrow to explore some possibilities depending on what a local contractor shoots us for a price on a home.
