For those of you SOUTHERNERS....

We just got 30" of snow.... how much did you get? Oh wait... nevermind you got rain! Whats this about Caribou... not being the 5th snowiest city in the US? Face it... we get alot of snow, more then you!! Not that I'm proud of it, but its facts!!!!!!!!!

Some of you might not know what I am refering too... but some of you will know... the people telling me and brian that we don't get all the snow we say we do! haha.... how's 30"+ for ya? I've been up since 6:30 plowing and shoveling and snowblowing! It's Caribou's Merry Christmas present. :D

Face the facts--- I think someone up stairs wanted to prove a point, and that he did to you "complantaint" southerners! HEHE.

I live on Marsh Island alias Old Town. When it rains real heavey the Island gets smaller and before you know it the roads are closed then the down town is closed and then all hell breaks loose.

Try responding to a human waste facility that converts human poo into good fertilizer . . . now that truly is a crappy fire. Fortunately, we haven't been called out to that place now for some time.

Somehow I knew you would put up a post here . . . I was watching the TV weather-guesser last night and they were showing the predicted snowfall up in the County and my thoughts were a) that's the place to be on Tuesday or Wednesday and b) I bet Jordan will be putting up a post to show that the County truly is where it's at when it comes to snowfall. :) This coming weekend I hope to be riding . . . hopefully there will be enough snow in Millinocket . . . if not I may be going further north.

When you planning on comming up?

Some trails are still not marked well. They are working on it. But the main trails are done and done well.

Looking just for a cheap place to stay or a nice indoor pool hotel?

I can give you a list of hotel names and phone numbers in Caribou/PI if you like.

All I ask for is a place that has a bed (well actually two since I wouldn't particularly like to cuddle up next to my brother-in-law), is clean and inexpensive.

If you have the names of hotels and numbers that would be much appreciated. I stayed at the PI Budget Traveler once when my wife was interviewing a PI Firefighter -- Fred Parsons -- you might know him. That was a decent place . . . the place across the way was wicked expensive.

Hopefully I'm coming up this weekend -- Saturday and possibly Sunday.

Still have plenty of snow though I assume . . . even with the rain? I kind of figured this to be early season riding with trails not so well marked, wash outs, blow downs, etc. Was there much of an issue with frozen limbs hanging into trails? In a way I'm more worried about all of the other folks who will be ascending into the area as this is one of the few places with snow and folks know all about it . . . there are few things scarier than lots of sledders who have a lot of pent up energy and are on the snow for the first time in a season. Thankfully the County has lots of space to spread out.

Yes, still enough snow and if anything positive came from the rain, it harden up the snow and packed it down for better ridding.

From some of my other "sources" . . . Sledmaine.com's members (and in particular Caribou Cabins' owner VMAXLADY) and an Aroostook County ATV BBS I've heard reports that groomers have been out and about yesterday and tonight. I also understand that heading north seems to be the thing to do.

Me too . . . I wasn't the guy who took a hot shower and set off the alarm at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning for the hotel-wide wake-up call by the way . . . or the guy who shortly afterwards started his sled and roared off into the dawn. :D I was the guy in room 230 however who was snoring pretty loudly.

Well I'm back and you were right. The trails were great. Rode 336 miles in 1 1/2 days of riding. Arrived around Saturday afternoon in PI . . . spent an hour or so looking for a place to do out-of-state registrations since the Maine website listed four places -- one place was closed for the day, two places no longer did registrations and the final place did do them, but he went out of business. Eventually we found a place that did them. Rode off for dinner at Portage. Returned.

On Sunday we did some exploring. Rode down to Monticello for breakfast at the Blue Moose. Eventually worked our way up through Fort Fairfield and into Caribou before heading south to PI and doing some more local riding.

My only regret . . . my brother-in-law had a long ride home so we didn't get any riding in on Monday morning (today.) That and it was pretty depressing when we were traveling south and the snow cover just kept getting thinner and thinner.

What a great time! There is more than enough snow. The Nordic Ski Center is a real "destination" resort for geo-skiers. There are a lot of caches, even a night cache and a letter box. But, bring your snow shoes, some are not ski-able.

Round 2 definately goes to the north, but I still think we won round 1.

P.s., FirefighterJake, I was in 231! and, no I did not set it off either.n I asked if "Jake" had checked in, but they did not know who Jake was. I guess that was before your 5 minutes of fame!

No kidding . . . in that case I apologize if my snoring kept you up or woke you up! :) . . . when traveling I usually use my real name . . . since folks seem to get a little worried when my pseudonym doesn't match up to the name on the credit card. :)
