I know that this has nothing to do with caching but I came across a very old cemetary while out cruzing in the woods last week and was wondering if any one knew what the AE. 82 in the bottom of the photo means. I have researched and have had zero success. This cemetary is called the K.I. Cemetary but in some of the research I have done it may have been called Judkins Cemetary. As you can see it appears to be very old. There are other stones in the area but the snow was to deep so I will be back in the spring to check it out.

I'm thinking that it is the age of the individual.

Æ: an abbreviation for "aged", as in "died May 13, 1864, æ 54 yrs 1 month & 6 days"

Just a guess on my part, but I would say it may be the age. Age Expired? May be a Latin phrase?

Thanks,

That would make sense now if I could just figure out a little info for this guy if there is any. I sent an email to the chamber of commerce for that area and we will see what happens.

The local historical society is probably your best bet for information...

Does Brownville have a local historical society??? I have never noticed one in my travels. They barely have a gas station and power:D

According to my Latin dictionary...
æ or Æ., ae., aet., aetat. (aetatis) of age, aged, of the specific age.

I love to cruise the older cemetarys. One of the oldest in the state is located in Ogunquit I believe, with some dating back to the early 1600's
There is one cemetary in Concord, Me. that I will never forget and a particular stone that is located there. When about 10 or 11 years old, on a dare, I went to this cemetary on a Halloween night at the "Witching Hour" and read this stone by candle light and as long as I live will never forget the saying on that stone.

Look here young people as you pass by
As you are now so once was I
As I am now so you will be
Prepare for death and follow me

This experience wasn't really much of a scare, however I got the crap jumped out of me when on the way back home that night 3 of my buddies, two of which were involved with the dare, jumped out of the woods  as I was riding my bike down that old dirt road and made me flip. Ah, memories sweet memories :) :p :)

Personally I really enjoy cemeteries . . . from a historical aspect they're fascinating to me . . . which could explain why one cache is in a cemetery and another is a multi that starts out in a cemetery.
