Just wanted to put this out to The Maine Geocachers, has anyone thought of putting out a Jasmer Challenge for Maine? Those of us that have completed all the requirements for the Jasmer Challenge are having a hard time finding the Jasmer Caches to log. Maine really needs one!

Is the thrill of the hunt just not as great as it used to be? Maybe you need to mix things up? Get a new perspective on geocaching or try out a new activity all together? There are many activities out there that any geocacher might want to check out both offered by Groundspeak or offered by someone else. Here's a list I've put together:

Geocaching

Opencaching by Garmin http://www.opencaching.com/

Opencaching Network http://opencaching.eu/ (list of all Opencaching Network sites)

"Turn every location into an adventure. Premium Members issue a challenge and persuade fellow cachers to accept and complete it. Whether for bragging rights or personal ambition, find a challenge near you and test your mettle."

"Go somewhere, do something. That is the basic idea behind Geocaching Challenges."

http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/default.aspx/

Check out the different Challenge types here: http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/types.aspx/

Benchmark Hunting

"Using your GPS unit and/or written directions provided by NGS, which are available for review by the public, you can seek out NGS survey markers and other items that have been marked in the USA."

http://www.geocaching.com/mark/

http://benchmarks.scaredycatfilms.com/

http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl/

http://www.cachingnow.com/BenchmarkH...7/Default.aspx/

Waymarking

"Waymarking.com will provide you with the tools to share and discover unique and interesting locations on the planet."

http://www.waymarking.com/

Wherigo

"Wherigo is a toolset for creating and playing GPS-enabled adventures in the real world. Use GPS technology to guide you to physical locations and interact with virtual objects and characters."

http://www.wherigo.com/

Munzee

"Munzee is a real world scavenger hunt game where items are found in the real world and captured using your smartphone. You then level up and gain rank based on your score. Points are obtained by capturing other people's munzees or when your deployed munzees are captured by someone else. Munzee is based off of the fundamentals of geocaching and adds another layer of fun to the hunt. Badges can be earned by unlocking specific achievements. "

http://www.munzee.com/

GeoCheckpointing

GeoCheckpointing is an outdoor game where participants use a GPS device or a map to find control points called GeoCheckpoints. The goal of every GeoCheckpoint is to show you some interesting place. Some GeoCheckpoints are placed in a beautiful nature while others can be found in charming corners of cities.

http://www.geocheckpointing.com/

BIT Caching

BIT stands for "Bound ID Tag" to represent that the cache is bound in plastic, also known as laminating it. No container. No log sheet. No hassles. Endless new hiding places. Endless fun!

http://www.bitcaching.com/

Intercaching

"An InterCache is an interactive geocache. A geocache is an outdoor activity that uses GPS devices to play a high tech treasure hunt. See geocaching.com for more information. An intercache is a new way of creating a mystery geocache, similar to a wheigo geocache. The biggest difference is that the entire geocache can be developed, edited, and played on your mobile phone's browser with no software required to download! Part virtual cache, part multicache, part puzzle cache, and part wherigo."

http://intercaching.com/

Shutterspot

"Shutterspot is a game in which some players take photographs and other players are challenged to find the exact spot where the photographer stood when the camera shutter clicked. That's the "Shutterspot"."

http://shutterspot.gpsgames.org/

GeoDashing

"Geodashing is a game in which players use GPS receivers on a playing field that covers the entire planet. The waypoints, or dashpoints, to be reached are randomly selected. The win goes to who can get to the most dashpoints; that is, if you can get to them at all! Each game has a new set of dashpoints making each game completely different and unpredictable"

http://geodashing.gpsgames.org/

Minute War

MinuteWar is a game of capture-the-flag using the whole world as the playing field and GPS receivers for navigation. Every player in the world uses his own local map, but all the maps are combined so that all players compete against everyone else at the same time no matter where they live.The maps are divided into squares, each one minute of longitude wide and one minute of latitude long. Each square contains a virtual flag. Visit the spot where the flag is located to capture the flag.The battle to capture these flags is MinuteWar. Your first flag is in a neighborhood near you.

http://minutewar.gpsgames.org/

GeoPoker

GeoPoker is a GPS game in which players try to assemble the best poker hand by being the first to find a moving container holding a GeoPoker log. Each time the container is found, the finder is awarded one virtual playing card at random. Each finder chooses the next hiding spot for the container and the GeoPoker log.

http://poker.gpsgames.org/

GeoGolf

Geodashing Golf is a game in which players use GPS receivers to navigate to 18 randomly placed waypoints (or 9 in a short course). Your score depends on how close you can get to each of the waypoints. The closer you get, the lower your score. Low score wins, just like real golf. Each game has a new set of randomly-generated waypoints, making each game different and unpredictable.

http://golf.gpsgames.org/

GeoVexilla

GeoVexilla is a GPS game that uses the globe for a playing field.
At random times, in random places, random virtual flags appear on a map of the world.
The challenge is to visit a flag's waypoint before the flag disappears.
Each time you succeed, you collect that flag, increasing your score.

http://geovexilla.gpsgames.org/

Degree Confluence Project

"The goal of the project is to visit each latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The project is an organized sampling of the world. "

http://confluence.org/

GPS Drawing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPS_drawing/

http://www.gpsdrawing.com/

Cists

Similar to letterboxing & geocaching

http://www.cistes.net/index.php/

Geohashing

Geohashing is a method for finding an effectively random location nearby and visiting it: a Spontaneous Adventure Generator.

http://wiki.xkcd.com/geohashing/

PhotoGeocaching

Photo Geocaching is an indoor/outdoor, all weather adventure game for camera and gps users. Participating in a PhotoCache hunt is a good excuse for getting out of the house and using your camera and GPS. The basic idea is to have PhotoGeocache owners set up PhotoGeocache Sites all over the world and share the locations of these PhotoGeocache Sites on the internet here at PhotoGeocaching.com. PhotoGeocachers then use a GPS or map to locate the PhotoGeocache site. All that the visitors (PhotoCache hunters) are asked to do is 1) take the required digital picture(s) in order to prove that they really fond the PhotoCache site and 2) post the picture to the PhotoGeodcaching.com website.

http://photogeocaching.com/

Who knew so many Geo-related activities existed!

Ah February, that magical month when Mama starts making plans for the summer family fun. I've renewed the KOA Value Kard, booked a second night free weekend and started to put together plans for geocaching events. Why have we started hosting geocaching events? Well, for one, it is fun to host an event but the reality is that it locks us into doing something, to have something to look forward to, to meet new people and make friends with those people that we keep crossing paths with. It lets Chris get out his preschool energy in a positive way. It doesn't involve the TV. We have the gear now so why not use it. Yes, our number of finds is low but look at the adventures we've had! Uncle Dan took us out in his boat in MO for our 6th find. We didn't even know we were claiming MO at the time! We did a family road trip to GeoWoodstock IX in 2011 and managed to complete the AGT, Allegheny GeoTrail, over eight days of our 14 day trip, a total of 60 finds with a four year old in the car. When three 11 coin sets of the AGT Geocoins arrived, that was pretty cool. Dad is still reminding me to activate them so they can be discovered at events. I had to buy reading glasses to see the tracking numbers on the coins! I hope to have the activated coins at GC3AQPR, our Leap Year Grid event. I'll be listing new events as the family calendar pulls itself together. We're doing the Maine DeLorme Challenge, GCW8N6. We've claimed over 25 of the 70 map grids so far with weekend trips. I need to figure out how to do a public bookmark listing of the geocaches to make it official. For more on Reed2ME, you can find us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter @MamaReed2ME

Discovering things about Maine, because of caching. CCC meaning.

I have rode the CCC road many times. Never really thought about the name too much. Then not too long ago Hollora and I did a cache that had some info on the meaning behind the CCC name. I got a email today that had that name in it and I did more searching and found out some more info. I just added this info to my cache at the start of the CCC road out on the airline.

Where does the CCC road get it's name?

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corps in March of 1933. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) is widely considered one of the most successful programs of the Depression Era in the United States. By March of 1933, 13,600,000 people were unemployed in the United States. Because of this emergency, President Roosevelt created the CCC only days after his inauguration.

The plan was to put 500,000 unemployed youths to work inforests, parks and public lands. It was essentially a peace time army that worked to conserve the country's natural resources and provide employment for young men during the Great Depression. Rather than establishing a new bureaucracy, the President established this program within existing governmental departments.

Within the first few months, over 250,000 young men were enrolled. Eventually, the CCC enrolled about 3 million unemployed and unmarried men to work on projects including reforestation, construction of fire-observation towers, laying of telephone lines, and development of state parks.
In Maine, over 17,000 young men served in the CCC between 1933 and 1942. The persons eligible for employment in the CCC were unemployed, between the ages of 17 and 25 and came from families on relief. Each person was paid $30 a month, of which $25 was sent to his family and the $5 could be used for personal expenses. The government provided room, board, clothing and tools.

The CCC was responsible for many conservation projects. Although CCC projects were carried out in every state, the CCC carried out many notable projects in Maine. Projects were conducted in state and national parks and Maine forests. In Maine, many of the roads, parks and other facilities that we all enjoy today were built or improved by the CCC during the 1930s and early 1940s.

Some of the larger projects that the CCC conducted were:

Constructing roads and trails in Baxter State Park, Mt. Blue State Park, Rangeley State Park and Camden Hills State Park
Constructing roads and bridges in Acadia National Park

Constructing many segments of 286 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Maine

Building the Evans Notch Road from the town of Fryeburg to Gilead in the White Mountains National Forest
Constructing the lower portion of Capitol Park

Planting trees in Capitol Park and the Veterans Administration Facility at Togus

The CCC also carried out many forest-related projects including:

Building fire-observation towers, storehouses and access trails

Fighting forest fires, conducting forest insect and disease control projects
Planting trees to reforest areas of Maine.

Recently I hit 100 finds! When it finally came time to find my 100th find, I decided it shouldn't just be your run of the mill Guard Rail Cache. I looked at the map to see what was in the area and saw a bunch of Cano's puzzle caches that I had solved a little while ago, yet hadn't gone out to get yet. I picked GC1ET93 and decided that it was special enough for me to go out and grab after work. After I left the office, I went and logged the cache, yay 100! Well a couple days later, I was looking through my statistics and it said I had 103 finds, yet only 102 distinct finds. Well, once I discovered that I had accidentally double logged due to gc.com being so slow a little while ago, I deleted the duplicate log. Well, this means that technically, GC1ET93 wasn't my 100th, oh well. Interesting thing though, on gc.com's Milestone page, you can actually edit your milestones. So once again GC1ET93 is officially, unofficially my 100th find.

On a side note, as of yesterday I have 25 consecutive days of successful finds. Look for this to continually increase as the days go on.

Most people that know me know that I hate phones.

Long ago when AT&T broke up and we could buy or own phones and wireless phones and accessories first came out on the market, I was running Down East Electronics. I had one of the first answering machines available and was having trouble coming up with a good message. A friend did a good Mae West so she made a message for me. After a couple of days I started getting a lot of calls. I came home one day and the upstairs neighbor asked if there was a problem with my phone. He said it never stopped ringing. I had 600 calls that day. It all started when one of the nurses mis dialed and she told her friends and on and on. I was getting requests for recordings and information from all over the world. I had created a monster.

Now this was a problem so I decided I had to do something quick. I came up with the perfect idea. I put on my outgoing message a busy signal. This is what would happen. You would call my number and it would ring twice and then the busy signal would start. after a minute it would beep and you could leave a message if you were smart enough to stay on the line after the busy signal started. The calls quickly slowed down and then someone came out with a cassette tape with prerecorded messages and my troubles were over. This is how much of my life has gone.

So I do have reasons for disliking phones. I do like gadgets though, so I have several computer based phones. Skype and the like.

I get a call around 10PM tonight. I miss the call because I can't get the phone open quick enough. I jump on Google phone and dial the number back. I get a strange voice on the other end...

Person: "Hello"

Me: "Hello"

Person: "Who is this?"

Me: "I'm returning your call, you just called me and I didn't pick it up quick enough."

Person: "Mike?"

Me: "Yeah who else would it be?"

Person: "This is Vinny, how did you find me?"

Me: "Well you called me first. Vinny who?"

Vin: "Vin from Middletown."

Me: "Holy crap! What did you want?"

Vin: "I didn't call you."

Me: "Is this your number? ___-___?

Vin: "Yes but I'm in Eritrea"

Me: "Where the hell is that? I have not seen or heard from you since I left Middletown back in 78."

So I connected up with a long lost best friend and talked for several hours catching up. Still don't know where Eritrea is but I will find out soon as now I have his email. No wonder I could never find him when I did searches.

Note to self. When using these computer phones make sure you dial the area code first (207) or it will randomly pick one.

Load them up into GSAK Wipe out all the old ones and put the new ones in. Load those into the Nuvi and off I go. Made plans for this weekend. Set up a special work plan with some special caches in mind.

So I drive to the southern part of the state and head off to my first cache. A CITO event. Nobody seems to be there. I walk around a while and no one comes around for two hours. There is some snow on the ground from the little storm we had but not even enough to go over sneakers. I collect a bag of trash in 15 minutes. I get to a Wifi site and find out the event has been canceled a day before hand.

This is the second event that got moved. I'll just have to treat events down there like oldsters. Have to check in with them several times a day, everyday, to make sure they are still there. Both in winter. hmmmmmm.

Well, did get to spend some time with a lot of old friends though. They always have a world coming to the end situation that need my help. Have to make more plans for next month. Maybe winter will be over by then.

I ask Brdad, Hollora, Mainiac and Cano for help. They all had excuses. Cano had just flushed a bottle down his toilet, Brdad thought I needed more snow and keep throwing snow on my roof then went to work on a macro for that. Hollora said spring is just around the corner. Mainiac was too busy updating the events page. So I am trapped.

I am going to get Tat to publish a cache at my front door. The FTF prizes will be in here with me. I'll get the door open one way or another.

Good thing is I tried out the new chat room. It works great and is a big hit. There were 15 people in there tonight. Friday Night Snow Storm Chat Night.

27 March 12010, Dick's Creek<br />
Last night was extremely windy and when I got up in the middle of the night Rock Steady was busy trying to reset up hit tarp tent in the wind and I could tell he was not having fun doing it. When I got up in the morning his tarp was laying over the top of him flat on the ground.<br />
<br />
This morning was not a fun morning to be packing up and hitting the trail. The wind was blowing at about 35 mph. I could not get my hammock tarp folded and rolled up very easily in the wind. To top that off the temps this morning were low. My fingers kept going numb and I had to keep putting them in my pockets to get them warmed up.<br />
<br />
I ran into Tater who thru hiked in 2000 and was heading up to maintain his section of the trail. We chatted for a few minutes and his dog kept whining because she wanted to keep moving. I said my goodbyes and moved on down the trail.<br />
<br />
Just as I reached the road Rock Steady caught up to me. I was surprise to see Snowman, Escargo, and Charlie waiting for a ride. They made the comment that I was really moving. I told them I was only doing 10 mile days. When the shuttle arrived Trooper jumped out and greeted me. I was hoping to spend a nero day with him but he was heading out. He said he was not going to be stopping in Franklin but was going to be passing through. He said he was going to be picking up a friend that was going to be hiking with him in Gatlinburg. It sounds like I may never see him again.<br />
<br />
I met another Mainer today in Hiawasse who goes by the trail name Gut Hook. He is from Belfast.<br />
<br />
I am in a room by myself tonight, I could not find anyone to share the room with and split the cost.<br />
<br />
News got back to our group that Gipc Girl will be off the trail now for six weeks. She has a broken ankle. It looks like I will not see her again after Franklin. The group is starting to dwindle out now. Who knows who I will be hiking with out of Franklin, it looks like I will be in a whole new group of people.<br />
<br />
I did the usual town visit stuff today, showered, did laundry, and ordered a pizza.<br />
<br />
While talking to other hikers about the trail there one complaint over the last couple of days was how they hated hiking over Kelly Knob. I hiked over it first thing this morning and I did not find it that difficult but then it might be because I hiked it first thing in the morning. I think all the others hiked up it at the end of the day.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow Mad Mike, Geo, Uncas and I will be heading out for Franklin. I will be leaving earlier then the other three because they are only planning on a 4.5 mile day and I am shooting for 11.8. It looks like I will be with a different group of hikers heading into Franklin. We will hook up again in Franklin I am sure.

    Last night Gipc Girl got up quite a few times in the night to go into the bathroom. I had assumed that she was making a normal bathroom call and minded my own business. When morning came I asked her if she was alright and she told me she got up several times in the night to run her ankle under cold water. When she showed me her ankle I noticed the swelling had started going into her toes and she could not longer even get her boot on her foot. There was a trail angle in the area that I knew who was also staying at the motel. His name was Mala. I talked to Mala and he was willing to take Gipc Girl to Franklin to the foot and ankle clinic.

Uncas and I caught the first shuttle out of town back to Unicoi Gap this morning. When we arrived at Tray Gap we were very cols and were surprised to see two people there hosting trail magic. Their names were DR Dewrag and Jeff. The trail magic was great and very rewarding but the problem was it was so windy and cold that we had to put all out extra clothes on to try to stay warm. We apologized that we had to leave because we were so cold and had to keep moving. I would have loved to stay but it was extremely cold. I hope they were not offended.

Uncas and I had agreed to that if we split up we would wait for the other person at Tray Mountain Shelter. I arrived at the shelter first and made up my lunch and waited for Uncas who never came. I got tired of waiting and moved on.

The trail past Tray Mountain Shelter is in bad shape, there are a lot of blow downs and in real need of trail maintenance.

I arrived at Sassafras Gap to find Uncas all set up for the night. I was hoping to make it to Deep Gap Shelter for the night but since Uncas was already set up I stopped for the night. Another hiker by the name Rock Steady also came and set up camp for the night. Rock Steady has spent the last hour getting a fire going. I did not think he would get it going but he did.
