Why Do You Attend? ~ or ~ Why Do You Not Attend?

There are 2 events coming up on the 13th of September, and I had to choose between the two. One of them is about 4+ hours north of me. Even though this is the event I would rather attend, it is just too far. The other is only 1.5 hours south and that's where I will be heading. See how hard this is sometimes? It came down to mileage, and just that. I'd rather be out in the Maine woods but will settle for the NH woods instead. Good luck with the event and I'll miss not being able to attend. :cool:

Congrats Tat and Dave and Lee and well just about anyone else planning on getting married . . . and of course congrats to Dubord . . . speaking of whom . . . has anyone seen or heard from him lately . . . he's been awfully quiet of late . . . I mean quiet for a lawyer. ;):D

Seems to me I heard about a new challenge to see who can attend the most geocaching events in one day... :rolleyes::rolleyes:

We have been to 2 Meet-n-Greets so far. Location/distance can be a factor. My son and I are the geocachers in our family, the girls aren't interested in caching at all. They have been very good about us running off to find a cache. I'm not the social type and tend to be very uncomfortable around crowds. Probably why I like this sport, it avoids large groups of people. Out of the types of events you would likely see me attend will be the short meet-n-greet type. Joey likes pirates so we may also attend the next Maine Pirate Quest. I don't see large or mega events in our future, though I would love to discover all the coins.

Hey you sound like me . . . well everything but the part about having a son and daughters. ;):D

I'm not much of a social butterfly either . . . I think of myself more like a lunar moth . . . a big, fat, gawmy lunar moth attracted to the bright light of a shiny, new geocache . . . but I digress.;):D

I'm with you . . . I started out enjoying geocaching solo . . . and still enjoy making a day of it (haven't had much time lately though with so much going on at work and at home), but I have also made and met new friends here at the site and now I occasionally get together with them for some caching days out . . . and I have even done a few events . . . albeit they were low turnout events and you could pretty much do your own thing, stay as long as you wanted and leave whenever you wanted to go do some solo caching.

I'd love to go to events. However, with the price of gas we can't run all over the state, at least not frequently. So I'd rather spend my money to just go somewhere caching. We did go to Bruce's event because it was winter and I needed to at least talk caching with somebody! The first year I didn't go because I didn't know anybody. Then I got "online friends" and I felt better about it. And I had a great time. Wanted to go to Pirate Quest but husband had a conflict in the schedule. We've agreed next year to go for part of the day and get home in time for his happening. I'd love to go to the events in early September but can't because that's always a bad time for us. Husband's mother's 100th birthday party this year, disabled daughter has company coming that we have to entertain etc. Wanted to go to the muffin event in Augusta but it's a two hour drive and started early.

So I guess my answer is: I'd go to more if the drive wasn't so long, if there were no conflicts with our schedules, if I could cache more when I'm there. A combination of meet and greet, some convsersation, caching and a bit of good food.

That said, I don't have much "entertainment" planned for the Eustis event. I figure people will chat, go caching, come back to check out the TBs, go caching, eat, get door prizes, go to the campground for a campfire and homebrew or whatever. Does that work??

AND I had a great time at the gathering in Orrington that wasn't an event but was really fun. Thanks Dan, for putting that together and thanks to all who came! You were all great! :)

I only get to a few events in Maine because they need to be coincide with a time that I am going up to visit the family. Usually it is an 8 hour drive but I try to cache along the way.

I really like talking to the Maine cachers to see what they are up to. All I have met have been really great. I especially liked the WWWWWW events because they have given me a chance to do get out and cache with a group after eating at Big G's.

I wish I could manage to attend more of your events, especially thos that are held in the summer.

All in all I would say that you are really great people who enjoy something that I enjoy too, caching.

Last year after the event we all went caching in Oakland. Everyone who was there that day can attest to this being all that winter camping should be. I think we all have memories of that day that will last a lifetime. Tat losing his ski into the Mesalonski Stream, Nikki chopping out frozen caches with an ice ax, Stef sitting on the cache we were looking for are images I will never forget.

And how about the year before when we went to Etna Bog.

That was another memorable experience!

I'll never forget that day. :) The sky was so blue and the snow so white. Trying to find the parking. And everyone lined up to sign the cache, and then the group picture. Ahhhh..........the memories. :rolleyes:

Sheesh! Etna Bog! When RULOST2? and I did that one, I'll have to admit that it was the first time I didn't believe Garmin, and swore that the car was in the opposite direction! LOL!

(Garmin was right, as usual...)

It sounds like we should have an event for those of us that have a hard time at events. I like an event where I am not just sitting around talking but can get some caching in while not missing out on the event. The summer is jam packed full so we usually only attend events before June or after Labor Day.

We did get to the pig/turkey roast this year.

With three kids one in High School one in Jr High and a 3rd grader. I am busy all the time. I have not gotten to cache as much this summer as last.

I need to learn how to camp to really enjoy some of these events.

The other thing that holds me back is that it is only my son and me who are truly into geocaching. My husband and daughters roll their eyes when I make them stop for a cache. (they almost always enjoy the hike, but they're teenagers and must complain. My husband has no excuse)

I hope to se any of you at an event and if I don't say hi just know that I am introverted. It is really hard to meet new people.:rolleyes:

It's after Labor Day and the fifth Cache Bashe is only 2 days away. You coming or what??;):rolleyes::D:p

I think we spoke at the Slipping event. What are you talking about introverted (shy), I just did not see that in you. Just come, hang out......or just say hi, sign the log and leave. Events are sort of anything goes.

Surely, I do know the kids and hubbie thing. You just go with the flow and bring them along when you can. Hope we see you at one of the events up here but will understand if it doesn't happen.

I had not camped in years before I started caching - it renewed old memories and skills and it was wonderful to have experienced mentors to help. I felt like part of a big family.

I live in Brunswick. My son is into planes. He thinks he is going to be a pilot someday. The Great American Airshow is at Brunswick Naval Airstation this weekend. :rolleyes: The Blue Angels have been practicing over our heads for the last two days. :mad:

If that isn't enough I committed to a Democratic Country Fair and bought a square in the donkey drop. :p

Luckily both these things are in Brunswick and my family will enjoy going to all these things.

I am thinking about sneaking away and driving north just to sign in and get a smilie but I don't know if my frugal mind will let me.:(

Oh the Air show - I know a couple of other cachers who will be there. Steve McCausland of Maine SP posted to our group the following:
"Since this is the last time the Blue Angels in appear in Maine, here are two great vantage spots to watch the show without going on the Navy Base. If you want to spend the day on the base it is well worth it, but the traffic to and from is huge. Although the times of the flights are not announced, typically the Blues are the last event of the day, Saturday from 3 to 4 PM and Sunday from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. If you have never seen the show, drive to Brunswick-Topsham Saturday or Sunday to view it. Sunday is likely to be the better of the two days for weather. As a long time Brunswick resident, here is where I've watched them in the past---
1 -- Park at the end of Water Street in Brunswick and walk along the the bike path . Water Street is off Mason Street, which is the first left after driving across the bridge into downtown Brunswick.
2-- Park at the Topsham Fairgrounds on Elm Street and watch the show from there. The fairgrounds on Elm St. is a left hand turn from a traffic light on Main St., Topsham, just after the Dairy Queen.
Both locations are also an easy walk to the new Merrymeeting Bridge between Topsham and Brunswick, which has a very wide sidewalk and a great vista for the show.
Also for those who may know their way around Brunswick, the new Mere Point Road Boat Launch would also be a unique place to watch the show. Mere Point Road is about a mile past Bowdoin College on Maine Street. The new boat launch, which opened last month, is about seven miles down Mere Point Road. ENJOY !"

Is there a cache at the boat launch yet?? LOL

My sister lives in Topsham and they watch the show every year from Foreside Road. A great farmer whose last name is Hunt I believe lets people set up their chairs on his front lawn. The lawn is all clipped down to the river and you can see the planes take off from the Air Station.

We've done the going on the base before and it is worth it once but not this year. We'll watch it with my sisters family in Topsham on Saturday.

I just thought it'd be good to post that the Last Cache Bashe of the Summer and the Apres events were well attended by new and old faces!! Both were great! I don't know if the first event had a record attendence, but I think the Apres event did...? Either way, both were a lot of fun! Thanks Mainiac and Hollora for hosting!!:D

And let's not forget the Apres Apres Helping Jake Move His Wicked Heavy Stove Event which was well attended . . . well at least well attended by Hiram and Medawisla and a few of Jake's family members and friends. ;):D

Steph, for the record - this year's Apres event had 44 attendees and last years was 53 but.......I know the weather discouraged a lot of folks. This year the campers were hearty folks - we had 8 tents (more than last year) and 10 people who stayed over. A whole table full played Yatzee in the rain under the EzEUp until after 12 MN!

Some of them even went in the pouring rain and did the GeoZoo night cache. They came back looking like they had a swim in the Penobscot! But everyone was laughing. Kaching Karen's boots were the hit of the party too!

One EzEUp lost it's strength and collapsed......but it was older. One other - the top came off. In the morning, Brad (Mainiac1957) helped get everything back together, picked up and wiped down - breakfast was served promptly, as promised at 7AM. A few folks who didn't camp joined us for breakfast too.

It sounds like everyone had a good time. I enjoy doing it and hope all is so I can again next year.
