So very excited to see this and have it on my calendar. Thanks for the post.
Hmmm... This could be a possibility for us. Right in the middle of when we planned to take vacation, and we were planning on going back to Gaspe anyway... and we had such a great time on our last caching trip to Nova Scotia...
We'll definitely keep this in mind as our vacation plans firm up. :D:D
I have been wishing for an excuse to come to NS to cache and visit. Now I have a better than good reason. I have it on my calender now. See you at GW.
I was kind of hoping that this event would be in New Brunswick. Not that I don't like Nova Scotia, but I will never, ever, under any conditions, ride on the Cat again. It was the first time that I was so sea sick that I wished for sweet sleep. In fact, in order to get back on for the trip back, I hit the local bar at Noon. The cat left at 7 pm..........
LOL! RULOST2? an I took the Cat to Yarmouth the first month is was running. They were having all kinds of problems - broken stabilizers, etc., - and the trip was probably the roughest I've ever been on.
But Like Mainiac1957 said - you can drive all the way there, or you could drive to St. John, New Brunswick and take the ferry to Digby, NS from there. It's only about 4 hours to St John from Bangor.
OK.....I have some "inside information" about The Cat. The first Cat had many problems and, WhereRWe, if you took your ride early...my sympathies. But the second Cat was/is quite a vessel. You can load on 210 cars PLUS 14 tour buses PLUS 750 people and it will zip 55 miles/hour across the water. It gets its thrust from four (9,500 h/p) jet engines that shoot out enough water for propulsion (like a jet ski) that can fill an olympic size pool in 33 seconds. But the figure I like most is this: to be lightweight it's made of aluminum....the equivalent of 32 million beer cans! How do I know these things? Risteen, my fiance, used to be (until 3 years ago) the marketing director for The Cat...she made all those TV ads you used to see with the sea gull on the bow leaning into the wind. There are two problems now to think about: the cost to ride The Cat, especially if you take your car, is really prohibitive. And splitting thier trips between Bar Harbor and Portland means you cannot assume you can leave from Bar Harbor and return to Bar Harbor when you want. If we go to the Nova Scotia event, it will most certainly be by car.
O - M - G!!!! I just about fell off my chair. I went to the event site and looked at the caches in the area. This must be the Mecca of Geocaching!!! I had no idea. Bridgewater, NS is a small town, but look at the caches in the area....no wonder they are holding the event there! Imagine 500 caches between Bangor and Waterville. It's that kind of concentration. Then look at Yarmouth, oh my. Hey Gob-Ler...are you going to this? I want to ride shotgun with you.....
I checked the closest available dates using this year instead of next and it comes to $363.00 USD. And the dates are spread out. You'd have to leave a few days before and return a few days after. That's this years prices with the exchange rate and the fuel charges and how things are going now. Who knows what will come by then.
513 miles for me by Okeydokey mobile sounds like the plan for me.
We've driven to the Halifax area several times, and have to say it's a nice ride. If you have the time, it's really better to drive than take a ferry/The Cat. We stayed at the Halifax KOA Campground, and really enjoyed it. (Hope the internet access is better now - we had to plug into a phone line and dial up to our "emergency" AOL account to get access.)
One year away today. Website 1.0 up and running www.maritimemega.com
We need to get 500 will attends on our own for gc.com to list this as a mega so that is our next task
I think we'll be heading to the other side of the country to geowoodstock in Seattle - too bad they are so close in dates to each other...
Ok!! Sounds fun........ question I have is this. It's a one day event...and hopefully a Mega Event.. So how long do you think you'd have to stand in line to sign the log at Canada's first geocache. I think I'd bring replacement logs along ;)
What would keep someone away from this Mega = a God-daughter's wedding in NJ :(:( I love NS and was planning on attending. Bummer!
Oh my, a PhD - very exciting and there is life beside caching. But it does make it hard. Congrats to you folks and especially your son.
My GodDaughter got her MS from Rutgers in May and her finace got his Doctorate in Pharmacy. Great young folks and I just can't let them down.
Nice to hear there are young achievers out there today. Many more I am sure - just may not know about them.
I plan on taking a week's vacation and slowly making my way over and back. (caching along the way, of course) Any other suggestions for campgrounds?
We liked the following campgrounds:
1. New River Beach Provincial Campground, New Brunswick - about 5 hours from central Maine. This would be good at the end of the day is you're caching along the Maine coast enroute.
2. Further along, a good place to stop if you're going slowly along the coast, is the Fundy National Park. Fantastic scenery!
3. In Nova Scotia, we liked the KOA camp-ground in Halifax, not too far from the event.
We've stayed at many other places over the years, but these ones stick in out mind.
:D:D
I will be posting nearby accomodations shortly.
The man who hid the first cache is going to be on site alot of the week end to say hi to people.
We hope to have the will attend app up and running soon.
We chose the date prior to GWS being announced
Thanks for your support
I have already contacted a few campgrounds in the area, and they will take reservations for next year.
This is exciting! I hope it is something Ben will be up for attending. I want to go to PEI again... maybe we can do that before or after this event.
I was fortunate to go to the event at Graves Island that dedicated a plaque to Canada's first cache. The cache placer was there. It's a Provincial Park. Later, my brother-in-law and myself went to get the cache. It was pretty cool. It would be sad to have to wait in line to find the cache.
We are now taking peoples intentions to come the the Maritime Mega. Please come to our site and let us know so we can get our Mega Status http://maritimemega.ca/index.php?opt...ormname=showup
Thanks Maritime Mega Organizing Committee
I signed us up for the event. I do plan to be there at this time.
If you are at all planning to attend this mega event, you should go here and sign up. They need to show that there will be enough interest to attain mega status. The sooner they get there then the sooner it can get posted. I am looking forward to my first trip to Nova Scotia next July.
I know we need to get passports but does anyone know if there is any issue with taking a dog into Canada? We've been talking about attending this event - sounds like fun :)
I believe you just need their rabies paperwork and health certificates. I plan to bring Jock and Sweetie to NS.
As long as you're dog is crossing w/its owner:According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.... Domestic or pet dogs between the ages of three (3) and eight (8) months, which are accompanied by their owners, require rabies certification in accordance with Section 2 if from a rabies-free country, or in accordance with Section 3, if from a country that is not designated as rabies-free. No additional certification is required.
NOTE: Dogs less than three months of age do not require rabies vaccination or certification that the dog comes from a rabies-free country.
Passports for Pets.......Can't hurt!!!
Thanks everyone for the support so far! The campaign to sign up 500 supporters is only a couple weeks old and we're already almost 1/4 of the way there -- or half way there if you count the number of people that the caching names represent!
With your support and a little pleading with Groundspeak, we'll have the event page published in no time -- AS A MEGA!
Signed up. Would love to make a week out of it. We'll see.
Ne ferry service? That's a bummer!
Go and post your will attends now. The Maritime Geobash 2010 is up.
well without a passport we wont be able to go to this one.
You can also get a passport card for only $65 - less than the cost of a passport. :D:D
