    Default Okay..help. lol

    Hello everyone,

I just got my eTrex Legend CX from FedEx. It is my first unit and I am eager to get started. A little late and rainy for that today though.

I was looking around the map that comes with this is not what I would call highly detailed. Where is the best place to get a map and what do you recommend?

Anyone who has a Legend CX with any tips for ease of use?

caches found zero but I was able to track myself from the couch to the bathroom and back. lol

Welcome to the group! But I think you're probably the FIRST one here with a Legend CX. The Garmin "X" models are new, and we've talked about how miuch we'd like to upgrade, but I don't think we don't have any hands-on experience with it.

But having said that, itlooks like the eTrex Legend CX is a mapping GPS, and works well with Garmin's Mapsource maps. I like their Mapsource City Select (We have a Garmin GPSMap 60c), but see that this unit supports their City Navigator software. Not sure what the difference is - maybe someone else can help.

Make sure you come to the next geocaching event and show us your GPSr!

Trust me, you don't want that lousy CX... I'll tell ya what I'll do, I'll trade ya my GPS72 for it, so that way you can have a good quality GPS to cache with, and I'll properly dispose of that one you got there for ya...

and sorry, i don't have answers... only dumb looks, But welcome to the group anyways!

You will definitely have to make to an upcoming event and meet all the usual suspects of the Maine Geocaching community. Welcome aboard.
    Happy Trails!

    Welcome aboard,

Many here love the mapsource city select, For many of them that works just fine. It is a good all round caching tool. I use Mapsource topo usa. I use that because for me auto routing is not as important and the topo shows many of the dirt roads and tote roads as well as the Applacian trail. I prefer the topo lines to tell me how far up or down the cache is. I think that youd like either. The only things that I can find wrong with the Topo is two things one is there is no auto routing feature for it and the other is that you need the disk to run it.

    Good Luck and happy caching,

    Dave

    Default Garmin Maps

I've been using my 60CSx for over six weeks now (as long as the x has been out). You are almost sure to want, either now or later, CitySelect or CityNavigator with it's excellent auto-routing capabilities. With the "x" models, I think that the Navigator will prevail. It uses larger portions of map for each selection, thereby using less selections to fill the same area as CitySelect. This might become important when it comes to "how much can I load into the unit"? Right now the Garmin firmware allows just over 2000 blocks. That seems a lot until you really start loading.

Right now I'm using a 512MB TransFlash SD card and have the area from southern Labrador across Canada down to the central Michigan area and extending down through Ohio, West Virginia, into the Carolinas. Everything south and east is included. I also have all of the same US portion of that same area using Topo (which I use a lot while actually caching), as well as all the tides for that area. I've pre-ordered a 1GB card already.

It's been a learning experience in downloading regular waypoints, since it's done differently than in my previous 60CS. I've also just begun loading thousands of caches as POI once I've reached the 1000 cache limit of the GPSr with pocket queries. This will come in handy during travel.

If you have any specific questions that I can help with, feel free to email me.

As a Magellan user (insert joke here) I'm afraid I don't have much to add to this thread . . . but I did want to welcome 1wall and quoddy to geocachingmaine.org.

I also use Mapsource TOPO USA and find it suits my needs much as Dave does but from what I hear on here and around, the Mapsource city select is good all around and will do just fine for geocaching.
