I was told the other day by the owner of some of the southern maine Subway resturants that he is working to add open wi-fi to all his stores in southern maine and NH. If I get buy any I will try to confirm ones that are operational and get coords but they may be another place to look to add to the list. Also I have heard that Hadlock Field in Portland may also be putting in an open WI-Fi but i have not confirmed anything on that yet.

    Ah, yes...

Jake's "home away from home"! LOL!

But remember, we're geocachers using GPS data. Post WiFi hotspots with the following information:

    1. Town hotspot is located in
    2. What it is. (i.e., public library, McDonalds hotspot, town office, etc)
    3. Physical location (124 Smart Street, for example)
    4. Cordinates!!

If this project finally takes off, and I develop the database, coordinates are necessary for MAPPING.

    A very interesting project!
I have a program on my cellphone. It monitors WiFi hot spots in range and build database with coordinates using build-in GPS. So after a while as I drive around the town to geocache/shop/work/whatever I have built a db of thousands wifi hot spots in Bangor area. Some are open, some are using WEP encryption I consider them also open and some are closed using WPA encryption. But I guess you are looking for officially public hot spots :P
Anyway this project sounds very interesting to me and if you need any help send me a private message.

Brdad set up the database, so all I need to do is input the data (in the format requested), then can produce a .gpx file of the results. I think I have 3 entries so far... LOL!

If you have a list of addresses of businesses offering free wifi you can get coordinates using Google geocoding API.

Beats me what the coords are to UHOP . . . I mean I can find my way their blindfolded and with one leg tied behind my back.

Besides, Unity isn't that big of a town . . . that said . . . perhaps Hiram and the Amazing Technicolor Garmin Oregon will get a nice set of coords the next time he comes down for his Guiness and Greek pizza.

This link brings up the text file. To use it, save it to your desktop as geo-wifi.gpx (text file) and you can import it into GSAK like any .gpx (pocket query) file.

I previously agreed to maintain it, but we need additional input.

We ask you to submit new WiFi hotspots with the following information (you can send it to me in a PM):

    1. Town hotspot is located in
    2. What it is. (i.e., public library, McDonalds hotspot, town office, etc)
    3. Physical location (124 Smart Street, for example)
    4. Coordinates

Once I receive the data, I'll update the file and it will be available to anyone who wants it.
