    Default Teaching Geocaching to Kids

My sister (Steve's OTHER Sister) is a children's librarian here in Maine, and is trying to plan her summer program now. She emailed me about the possibility of helping with a workshop on geocaching with kids. We would start at the library and on the computer, and then end up searching for actual caches.

The main setback I can see right away is having gps units for the kids to use. It's no fun following someone else who gets to find the treasure first, and hands-on experience is what it's all about.

I am wondering if any of you have had any experience with this subject- teaching a group of adults/kids about caching. Thanks!

I can remember the G-Team who is an educator, applying for a grant to purchase GPS units for his classroom at one time and know that he was successful in procuring some units and using them in his curriculum. Maybe if he reads this he could let you know how things went. Or even yet just email him and I'm sure he would be willing to give you any information that he has regarding this.

For our Girl Scout camporee a couple of years ago, someone was able to get a couple from LL Bean on loan. I don't have a contact name for you though.

that is a great idea, there is a 4-H camp that does that in the summer, and they just borrow from people I believe. I will be doing it with my girl scout troop, and I believe our council has a couple. I will see when the time comes.

When I did a Geocaching 101 informational program to a local group (Unity Barn Raisers and Friends of Unity Wetlands -- two groups that have allowed me to place several caches along their walking paths) I put a call out to any local geocachers who would be willing to come out and "loan" their GPSrs and experience for an hour or so . . . of course this was on an evening one time and on a Saturday afternoon the second time so it was a bit easier to get folks to help out (plus it may have helped that I offered free pizza for the volunteers . . . I've come to the conclusion that geocachers really like eating. )

Our school won a grant (Toyota Tapestry) to purchase (among other things) 15 GPS receivers. We have used them to teach 7th graders about satellite and GPS technology with great results. We set up 7-8 waypoints in the GPSr and the kids had to find them and record what they found (we typed up famous quotes on laminated paper and taped them to the objects). They then had to waypoint an object of their own choosing. We then had them enter the quotes into a database, as well as the coords of their own object. This covered numerous part of the MLRs and the kids really enjoyed it.
