    Default Geo'in at Fort Gorges

I would like to get out to Fort Gorges in Portland because there is 1 or 2 geo's out there and a lettebox, but I don't have a boat. I would love it if there is someone who wants to get them and let me tag along or would have any info on how to get out there. Thanks.

It's possible to kayak out there and there are kayaks for rent out there someplace I'm sure.

I'm not sure I want to tackle something like that by myself, but good suggestion

I think there is now just one virtual there on the Fort. I'm not sure about the letterbox.

Getting to the island is not a big problem - landing is the problem :-) Most larger boats will have issues. Smaller boats (and kayaks) are easy.

You are wise not to head over by yourself if you've rented a kayak. It's only a little more than a mile but it can be quite a journey with the harbor traffic, wind, and tide.

I have promised to take someone out later this summer using my kayak and my spare kayak. We'll only be attempting this under great conditions, nothing marginal. When we're headed out I'll post it so if others want to go you'll know when. Renting a kayak is a good option and not too expensive. If you need more info on local rentals, let me know. Better yet, stop in at EMS on Marginal Way

that would be great, nice group activity. I'm hopin to be able to do it without my kids though or maybe with who knows. What is EMS (not where I get my EMT license right)? Can you put in at Bug Light, it seams shorter from there.

If I had to guess I might think EMS would be Eastern Mountain Sports and not Emergency Medical Services . . . but just a guess on my part.

firefighterjake is right - EMS is Eastern Mountain Sports.

Yes, you can put in at Bug Light. However, I'd recommend against doing so under most conditions. In order to get to the Fort from Bug Light you must cross the main traffic lane with all the inbound and outbound boat traffic. Yes, as a small boat you have the right of way and thus they yield to you but you'll be dealing with all the wakes and turbulence caused by that traffic. It's also got a direct line out to the open ocean so the current is stronger and waves are already higher before adding in the boat traffic.

Although it's a little farther putting in at East End Beach is a safer journey over smoother water.
