Cache Rescue

[Cache Maine]

A maintenance issue was brought up about a cache in another thread recently and I thought it might be a good idea to have a place to post about caches that might need maintenance. Sometimes, when caches get archived, the container remains on site. This would be a good place to indicate that so that if someone happens to be in the area, they can stop by and CITO the litter.

Please start a new thread for each cache and indicate it's GC number and Name in the title. Happy Caching!

There used to be a page on this board that did this for us. I think brdad had a hand in creating it. I may be wrong because I am getting old and forgetting things!!!

The cache rescue section has been removed. Not because of lack of need, but for other reasons.

Perhaps an interested volunteer should keep a separate thread just for this reason, or perhaps if there is enough interest in it, Rick could create a dedicated forum section.

Excuse me - is there something I missed? Isn't the separate thread thing exactly what Cache Maine mentioned?

Why do we need any more of a volunteer? This should be self running if folks don't get off thread.

There is surely a lot of administrative stuff I do not know about the site but seems this issue is just one of communication - which is what this whole site is about.

No trouble at all. The problem is that as some people move on in their lives, Geocaching becomes a low (or non-existant) priority and the cache suffers until someone speaks up and it is archived. Some cachers realize this and archive the cache on their own, but some do not. If nobody spoke up, these abandoned caches would clutter up the landscape as well as our cache queries. It's kind of a natural cycle for some caches. Speaking up initiates the "housekeeping" so to speak.

You did not start any trouble! My comment was regarding the thread and forum stuff.

We all need to be diligent and as Sudonium mentioned - folks do move on. Some take action and others just leave stuff out there on sort of auto-pilot. We all know auto-pilot does not work so well for the long term.

I try to do light maintenance whenever possible but some caches - this just isn't possible. I don't always carry everything I might need either. And then, of course, would the owner be offended or upset? Who knows - some folks have really short fuses.

DKF - your comment about the wet log was fine. I hope you went back and posted a needs maintenance (and that can light a short fuse for some owners). The most you could do aside from replacing the log.

No problem DKF....I'm really glad you brought up what you did. I've been thinking about putting together something for a while now...all the stars lined up, I had some extra time after turkey and spent it putting down my thoughts here on the board. I think that as long as everyone stays on topic and states facts only, this can be a very useful tool to improve the quality of caching in Maine. It also leaves it up to all the cachers to keep an interest in it, instead of one or two people doing all the work.

For instance, I unfortunately have to post one of my caches here in hopes that someone can help. Sometimes, a person just has to face the fact that they need help or a helping hand...maybe instead of "Cache Rescue" we can call it "Helping Hands."
