    Default RE: Carribean vacation

My wife Heidi hates Maine winters . . . whereas I love Maine winters. This year I'm making a small concession . . . I'm taking off for a week and going somewhere south with her to a warmer climate.

In any case, right now I'm thinking about San Antonio, TX . . . anyone been down there and have any recommendations of things to do?

Another possibility is to head to some Carribean Island . . . but I have no idea of what are good islands to visit . . . and even more importantly how much we would have to lay out for the airfare, hotel, food, etc. Any suggestions??? Honestly, I kind of expect that the cheaper route would be to do the Texas thing, but I have to admit those beautiful blue waters certainly look appealing.

And of course, the San Antonio Riverwalk is fantastic - great place to take your "sweetie"!

(And I'd bet that there are a LOT of geocaches in the area, too.)

Texas? Isnt' that where President Gump is from? How big is your belt buckle? I would recommend jamaica, mon, perhaps Sandals or Couples. these are all inclusive American plan places with as much or as little as you'd like to do. Second choice, a cruise with Royal Caribeaan, first class outfit with a lot of destination choices. There's also Key West with a lot of out there folks but sun and fun. There are deals out there right now. You might want to call Day's Travel in Waterville, ask for Michelle. She'll give you the straight scoop. The travel folks get there pay from whereever you book so there's no cost to you and I've been all over timbuckto with these folks. TEXAS, NOT!!!!!!!! Giddee up cowboy!

I'd go with the cruise route. It costs a lot less than staying somewhere on one island for a week and then you get to visit more. We did 7 Carnivals and 1 Princess. Pick one with stops on the mountainous islands. St Thomas is good or Dominique. Jamaica has perfect terrain, the people are just kind of pushy trying to get you to buy their products. Forget about the boring flat islands like Aruba unless you just want to sit on the beach and drink. If you do San Antonio, like WhereRWe? says, Riverwalk is very nice. We were only there one day but besides the Alamo, we didn't find much else to do. Do the cruise!

For me, I like the cruising route too. Of course the food is soooo, good and you are pampered in the dining room. At the last minute you can usually grab some nice, inexpensive rooms which haven't been sold at a reasonable price. You don't need a big room with a balcony cause you don't spend a lot of time in your room. And - there is a casino to enjoy along with shows at night.

Gump & I like going to all inclusive vacations in the Dominican Rebublic. They were the best travel buys that we could find. Check out the GWV, TNT, and then call Michelle at Days. They usually have a March madness sale. Good luck with your search. Vegas is a good value also. Lots of geocaches too!!

Thanks for the replies folks . . . approximately what should I expect to pay for a cruise vacation or an all-inclusive type trip to the Carribean?

If you pay more than $500 a person for a 7 day cruise, it is too much. Go to vacationstogo.com and check on their 90 day ticker. One example is a 5 day cruise to Mexico out of Mobile, Alabama for $309 a person. Of course most of them leave from Florida, but if you want to do a day or two in San Antonio, a ship leaves from Galveston. Everyone has their opinion on the best cruise line. I thought I would hate it my first time but ended up enjoying it. Just in case, you may want to go with the 4 or 5 day cruise to start and add a day at your embarkation port before hand. The richer people here at Geocaching Maine will recommend travel agents, and different types of vacations but I have never met anyone that could take a cheaper vacation than me. Two years ago when I still had a job, in one year I went to Seattle for $59 on JetBlue from Boston for each way, St Augustine, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada where we stayed in a suite in the Palace Station Casino for $10 a night (internet special), a week in Mexico, and a one week cruise. Not bad for someone that only made $31,000 a year gross. Look around, deals are there.
