I. Geocaching Maine without GeocachingMaine.org?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Show your appreciation for all that GeocachingMaine.org offers you
--There’s a current thread called “1000 reasons why we love geocaching” in which you can geocachers posting over and over that their greatest reason for geocaching is the people they meet who they otherwise wouldn’t have gotten to meet. We stay in touch with these special friends though geocaching events, but sometimes these are only once a month. The way most of us maintain relationships throughout the year is through GeocachingMaine.org. You wouldn’t be receiving this newsletter if you weren’t a user of GeocachingMaine.org. While we all wish geocaching was truly free, we have to admit that it is not. The website for GeocachingMaine.org is not free, even though it is offered free for geocachers to use, it still has to be paid for. In fact, it will cost $1,000 this coming year to run the website. More details about the costs, and benefits of donating, are below, but at the very least consider clicking on the “Donation Area” box on the right-hand side at GeocachingMaine.org to help contribute to this great resource!
--For almost four years, GeocachingMaine.org has been fortunate enough to be hosted on a server at no charge. GeocachingMaine.org has been hosted jointly with another website that is paying for the server use. That website is growing very large, as GeocachingMaine.org has also grown, and the bandwidth can no longer support both websites. Action is needed now to sustain GeocachingMaine.org!
--Our website master attroll generously volunteers his time to run our website. He jointly runs the other website with which GeocachingMaine.org shares bandwidth. GeocachingMaine.org’s situation has put attroll between a rock and a hard place. While he loves the Geocaching Maine community, he recognizes that GeocachingMaine.org must support itself. The greatest way to show our thanks to attroll’s contribution all these years, is to help him get out of this sticky situation by giving monetary support to GeocachingMaine.org.
--By getting GeocachingMaine.org on its own, the bandwidth will be increased, and we can grow even more! The server GeocachingMaine.org is on now only hosts a handful of websites, which means GeocachingMaine.org runs more efficiently and safely than if it were hosted on a server with hundreds of websites. By paying for the current server, attroll can continue maintaining GeocachingMaine.org with confidence that it will be well supported by the server. The server costs $900 a year. The software, including the forums, gallery, and articles, costs about $100 a year. Thus GeocachingMaine.org needs $1000 to continue the services we enjoy. Last year only 27 members donated and $210 was raised.
--In order to sustain GeocachingMaine.org, many more of us need to donate. There are some extra perks for donating. You will be able to increase the amount of Recipients you can send PM's to at one time, increase the amount of PM’s stored, the ads on the footer of each page are removed, and there is a separate forum that only donating members can see and post in. Donating member, Hiram357 says he enjoys the extra PM storage and not seeing adds on the website, “but I’d donate anyway,” he says.
--GeocachingMaine.org has given us a place to laugh, find information, gain support, and plan events. Please consider giving back! Again, there is a “Donation Area” on the home page. Thank you to those who have donated, please continue your support!
