    Default Dangerous Caches?

I am an Iraq/Afghanistan vet. and sometimes I have some real bad anxiety opening up ammo cans or anything really I cant see into. Does anyone else expirience this? Has there been anything in the news about anyone ever doing anything bad with caches? Either way I push through it as I love being in the wilderness searching out caches.(kinda like mini-missions) I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

First of all, welcome to the addiction!
Secondly, thanks for defending our country, so that we may enjoy our freedom and do things like caching.

Several years ago, we had some kids tampering with caches, peeing in them and such. I have not heard of any cache being turned into something harmful. More often, caches are mistaken for something harmful, like bombs. There are several news articles about that.

I've never had any anxiety issues opening a cache, but now that I know you do, send me an email before you do my Halfmile cache.

    See you on the trail

PS: I am often logged into chat, but not paying attention or not at my computer. Often if you wait 10-15 minutes I will check in.

Moonsouth - are you a member of MAGC (Military Association of Geocachers)? If not PM or EM me and I will connect you. Some of their members might help - and - they have been holding caching events on the forward front.

    Here's a link to MAGC.

I already welcomed Moonsouth in my normal welcoming email, but didn't know he was a Vet. Glad to have you with us!

(And no - I agree that we've seen no suspicious activity with caches. Well, there was that time when a lot of cachers had a problem with a cache located in an area known to be a popular meeting place for gays - but that's another story. LOL!)

(And did you know that there are currently 73 geocaches in Afghanistan and 304 in Iraq? LOL!)

On a side note, is there anything we can do to make them less anxiety provoking? We want you (and all vets) to enjoy geocaching so let us know what we can do. Most of us try to mark them 'geocache' and often paint them black or brown or multicolor.
    Thanks!

Sorry about that first post...I was simply trying to spell...and hit a wrong key or something. I'll start over. I not so naive to think that the state of Maine is the same old place I grew up in years ago, but I do think that we still have a state where we can place caches without the worry of someone tampering with them. One thing I will say though is when any of us bring a potential problem out into a open forum we open ourselves up for the possibility of someone saying " Hey I never thought of that " or some similar thought.

Bruce, I didn't know that and after careful consideration I am not going to do them either.

Yeah I was a little apprehensive about putting it out there, but I had to see what peoples thoughts were. There is not much the cache hider can do I dont think to make it any easier. I mean its got to be hidden and atleast semi-camoed. I thinks its becoming easier the more I find. Its just those damn anxiety/adrenaline rushes when I first see it and the what if questions. Im sure it will get better. Thanks all for your input.

I can see why a vet might have trouble with opening caches, especially ammo cans. There would be that "what if" question in the back of your mind. I guess my advice would be to find caches in peaceful places, pick see-through ones at first like Lock n Lock boxes. Maybe take someone with you to open the ammos? With time it should get better.
