I'd go with the cruise route. It costs a lot less than staying somewhere on one island for a week and then you get to visit more. We did 7 Carnivals and 1 Princess. Pick one with stops on the mountainous islands. St Thomas is good or Dominique. Jamaica has perfect terrain, the people are just kind of pushy trying to get you to buy their products. Forget about the boring flat islands like Aruba unless you just want to sit on the beach and drink. If you do San Antonio, like WhereRWe? says, Riverwalk is very nice. We were only there one day but besides the Alamo, we didn't find much else to do. Do the cruise!
