    Default Photo Storage???

My mom has recently purchased an 8 megapixel camera and she doesnt own a computer and I have no interest in her owning her own computer as it would make my life miserable since she has no computer experiance what so ever. The problem is she is taking endless amounts of photos and with the photos I already have, it is getting to be a bit of a strain of the system.

What do you folks use for photo storage and backup. I was using cds but that got way out of control and now I have several cds that we will never look at because we really dont know what is on them. We are also looking for a safer system of storing them other then a pc and laptop.

we would use an external hard drive. easy to use and to store most come with usb hook-up. i would also check out www.newegg.com they have a large selection of different storage devices or you could go back to prints and get a storage unit to keep them in. another idea is to store them at a photo hosting website one of these would be www.winkflash.com or www.snapfish.com or www.flickr.com . investagate and see what you like best.

When CDS aren't enough, DVDs are next!

I try to organize mine in folders, then back up to DVD. Eventually I want to add some NAS (Network Attached Storage) So either of us can access each others photos or music even if the other computer is off. But NAS or an external hard drive alone is not enough for a safe backup, IMO. You still need CD, DVD, or a remote storage site.

Although a NAS system would be nice, I had two empty slots for hard drives not being used in my computer and I have two hard drives given to me so I put them in my computer. I am using one right now just for music and the photos are currently on my main drive right now. The other one is not being used yet. I am debating on getting ride of these two and getting two 1TB hard drives and raiding them together and using them for photos and music. You can buy a 1TB hard drive for about $150 now days.

I have looked at those, but have feared some of the reviews. keep us posted.

I may just build my own.

There are some share issues I am running into right now. I think the reveiws where low because folks where "over"using them. For photo storage and music I think it will be fine. I have slowly started moving things over.

I have had a 500 gb my book and it has done great for archiving and backup. It has performed great and works better than the one that I had that was made from spare parts but is not quite as flexable.

I have an external hard drive that my husband and I share just for photos. It is an old 80GB Maxtor but I love it. I think I will upgrade pretty soon to a larger drive.

If you have room in your desktop for another hard drive, it is a lot cheaper to add a 1TB to it. It is almost 1/2 the cost. If you don't have room or want a portable hard drive then here are some more 1TB through NEWEGG that are from Western Digital.
