I remember coming back from Vietnam. Enough said.
But we went to our son's graduation from Navy boot camp at Great Lakes, IL a few years ago. We took him out for the day, with an evening meal at a pizza place. We waited and waited for the bill, and when I asked, I was told that someone had paid for our dinner. I was more shocked than my son was.
When we got up to leave, the guy at the next table got up and shook my son's hand, thanking him for his service. Sheesh! And this was not too far from Great Lakes - where 200 or so new sailors are released to the surrounding area every weekend! This wasn't like here in Maine, where a service member in uniform is not a common sight.
These episodes restored my faith in America.![]()
